New alternate models for imperials, BFG

Not sure if this has been posted or if it's legal to post, but found this gem for alternate BFG models. Have yet to purchase from them but seems legit.

Yes, they are lovely models . Another alternative is this set http://www.shapeways.com/shops/armand?sort=newest. The miniature designs are really nice but I think the technology still lets down the detail and the smoothness of surfaces somewhat.

    And then there are these:

And then there's these, which you can either win at this year's Gothicomp or eventually buy at Fox Box.

Just purchased a few, can confirm they're legit, like you guys said. Excited to add to my Imperial fleet.

I recently bought some ships from Shapeways and found them somewhat disappointing. Even with 'ultra fine detail' the detail isn't very sharp and the layers from the printer show clearly when painted. It's a shame, some of the ship designs are really lovely, but I think the technology isn't quite up to realising them yet.

Which ships did you get? Keep in mind that models often need some cleaning and maybe even filing/sanding.

Frosted Ultra Detail isn't the idea material, but after some cleaning it could sometimes be pretty sweet, look at these Necrons for example. I'm also curious to see some ships printed in Frosted Extreme Detail.

Also keep in mind that there are more high end services out there. However, 3d printing is still very expensive, meaning that it could mainly be used as a means to produce prototypes/masters, which could then be cast in resin/metal/plastic. The Battlegroup Helios ships are also 3d models that have been printed and cast. GW doesn't even use normal sculptors anymore, all their models are 3d printed and cast.

Explains the souless and rather bland 3d moddled look to GW's recent stuff.
Thinking of using a repulsive and Battlefleet helios stuff for a heresy era Traitor fleet.

I got the gun batteries frigates with small prows (Swords, basically). Here are some pictures next to a Firestorm for comparison. The are not as tall but are thicker in the middle for about the same volume. The material is slightly translucent and looked fine unpainted, but the printing layers started to show up with a couple of layers of paint.

I cleaned them up as best I could and sanded down the prow but couldn't really get in amongst all the little details. I really like Armand's designs, there's some really beautiful work on here and on other ships but I think the printing lets them down somewhat. From what I've seen of the Helios ships, high end 3d prints and resin casting works very well and I'd love to see that for these too.

In which material did you print them? Is this Frosted Ultra Detail?

I had the same problem - Frosted Ultra Detail look horrible when I recevied them in the mail. It turned out that the printing process uses a waxy substance to support the actual material. This waxy stuff is often on the models when you get them, but its impossible to tell its there. When I first saw this, I thought it was a poor print - but a wash in warm soapy water cleaned it away, leaving the beautiful model that I was expecting. I strongly recommend that you reserve judgment of any model you receive until after you wash it properly.

Indeed, look at a converted version of Armand's transportship.

Apparently the ships that were originally sold by Abomination (look a few posts back) are now being distributed by Vanguard Miniatures: http://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/prod...hic-starships/

They'd make some awesome escorts for any Imperial fleet!

That's a very nice job on the transport ship. The Abomination ships are also rather pretty. Pitty they're in metal.

By the way, has anybody gotten a hold of those Abomination ships? If so, Vanguard Miniatures are looking for pictures of painted ships to share on their website and social media.

They do place in the lore that ships of the same class but from different forgeworlds etc can look nothing alike. So GW opened the door to having stand ins of any description.
