In all seriousness, I'm lucky enough to not be the typical poor uni student between my scholarship, part-time work (go, go, forklift license!), and still living at home. I knew the KS was coming so I've been putting money aside. Then spent more than that .

I've got a week until I go back to uni so I should try and knock one of these KD models off this week.

Re: The Hobby Desk and Back Again: A Log by Doi

I've been working on the boss for my Ork Meganob unit this morning and I wasn't happy that there wasn't the option to build the Bossnob model as biger than the rest. So I decided to do it myself and at the same time try something new by putting a tutorial together. So here goes nothing:

How To Make Your Nob Bigger In 7 Easy Steps

    Step 1

Take the back of the body and cut off the leg across the red line. A handsaw will do the job but I'm a Big Mek at heart so I got out my Dremel and used a high-speed cutting disk. Once done, clean up the two halves.

    Step 2

Build the rest of the torso as standard

    Step 3

Cut up some bits of plasticard to use as spacers. I've used 1mm thick stuff and needed enough to put a layer under each foot, three layers between the legs and torso (1 to replace the 1mm lost to the saw blade, 2mm for actual spacing), and 1 layer between each arm and torso

    Step 4

Cut one layer to size to fit on the leg-torso join, then glue it to two other layers of plasticard as a guide to make them identical. These don't need to be perfect as you will be covering it in greenstuff later (which I haven't done as yet), but make sure they are not too big. Glue the stacks to the leg-torso joins.

    Step 5

Attach the legs. Glue a layer of plasticard under each foot and trim to fit.

    Step 6

Trim a layer of plasticard to git each shoulder join. I've kept it to 1mm, but nothing stops you from going bulkier.

    Step 7

Build the rest of the Bossnob as you see fit

It's hard to get a decent shot showing the height difference, but this does the job I guess. Red lines show the difference in eye-level.

I also finished the fourth and final standard Meganob but forgot to take a group shot.

Nice nobs! That conversion of the Boss works really well- proportionately larger but not excessively so. glad to hear you aren't funding your hobby by robbing the old ladies of Melbourne and/or child stealing...

What do you think the forklift license is for?

Sadly, these guys aren't on that list any time soon. I just needed a project to build while the weather was too hot to be painting in front of a lamp .

Update time! I've finished (bar the base) my stone elemental for my RPG campaign. If only I was doing an entire army made of stone then I could paint things so much quicker!

I've also made some considerable progress on two two trolls. Quite happy with the skin on these guys since I'm just doing them quick and dirty. Still need to finish clothes/weapons/mouths/eyes.

I've also nearly finished off the two White Knights from Kingdom Death. I've gone back and shaded the armour more (with super thinned Agrax Earthshade) and I'm very happy with it. All that is left I think it to touch up the red capes from paint splatter, the belt on the ball and chain guy (I have no idea what colour to do here) and shade the eye slits on the helmets.

Re: The Hobby Desk and Back Again: A Log by Doi

I've made a start on my first two Kingdom Death: Monster models. For anyone confused since I've just finished off some Kingdom Death models, KD has both a line of resin releases (which I've been painting) and a board game (KD:M) with plastic models.

The Dragon Tyrant will be my first months entry into the Tale of Board Game Painters. This model exudes pride and arrogance, so I'm hoping I don't bugger up the face. So, why have I started with a boss and not something we can hunt? Well our current campaign got pretty much wiped out last weekend so we're going to start a new one with a different story and this guy is the recurring boss in his human form. Since he can never be fought outside of this particular campaign I thought I should paint him first.

I've also made a head start on the second month's model while the paint dries on the Dragon Tyrant. So far only have a base coat and thin wash on the Screaming Antelope.

    Update time!

The Dragon Tyrant is nearing completion. I've only done a base coat on the gold, but after that I only have some minor details like the eyes, finger nails, and some markings on his forehead. I'm thinking of changing the swagger stick to something other than gold though.

The Screaming Antelope is about half done. The skin and fur is done, I've started the horns/hooves, and still need to do the tiny hands, under-mouth and eyes.

It's all great but I am a sucker for scenery so I love the work you have done on that dragon base.

... and I love dry-bryshing stone .... Give me a bg lump of stone elemental or a bit of scenery any time.

I'll have to scrounge up some more sediment-based projects then .

Thanks, I've never managed a bright, vibrant red I've been happy with until this guy.

And speaking of the Dragon Tyrant, he's all done now. I want to go back and touch up the eyes/facial tattoos since I was in a rush to finish him for our first fight and I'm not happy with them. Month 1 of the Tale of Board Game Painters complete.

Thanks! I've been flat out with uni since the last update, but I've managed to put together enough five-minute spurts of free-time to make some progress. I do plan on basing them, but I'm going to wait until I have about half a dozen or so models done on this size base first. I have inserts to go with the survivor models on 32mm bases, but for anything 50mm and up like these guys I have nothing so I'm going to have to get creative cutting up some smaller inserts like I did for the Gold Smoke Knight (although these would be much more stone face, less desert).

I've got the Screaming Antelope all finished up. Well mostly, I'm not happy with all of the tiny hands. I didn't want them the same colour as the main body, but also not too different, and I don't think I hit it on the head. I'll redo them eventually. This is Month 2 of the Tale of Boardgame Painters finished.

I also wanted to attempt those fancy saliva/blood strings that other people have done, but I just couldn't get the 'string' I was using to attach to the model. Maybe another time.

I've also knocked together a prototype for a not-Sicarian Ruststalker unit to go with my Traitor Guard. Mainly just a body swap to a Crypt Ghoul for now, but there will be more wires/techy-bits (technical term) etc when finished. Any thoughts? Apparently I'm still an Ork player at heart since I'm building a supposedly shooty army to be combat heavy (or at least get in someone's face with a flamer).

And I've slowly been dabbling with converting a second Rotbringer Sorceror for AoS. I started out with the plastic Skaven Grey Seer (since I couldn't get one of the Plague Priests from the screaming bell kit off of eBay), cut and repositioned things to make it more hunched over, starting sculpting some Nurgle-esque growths (man, sculpting is hard), replacing the staff with a scythe, gave the right hand some bells, and I've started enclosing a Blight King head in greenstuff to make a hood. Pretty happy here so far. I'm torn between painting up the ball in his hand as an eye or a ball of pus...

Over the next few weeks I need to make a start on Month 3 for the ToBP, so this afternoon I'll hopefully get to undercoat a selection of models to pick from. I'm currently doing some gap filling on the White Lion, Butcher, Manhunter, King's Man, and The Hand.

I've also been bitten by the Inq28 bug even if I'll never play the game, so I've been on an eBay binge buying bits to convert up some warbands...

Re: The Hobby Desk and Back Again: A Log by Doi

When I'm not painting colours that need to be matched exactly over lots of models I tend to wing it so I don't remember what mixes I used, but I used these paints from GW:

    Mephiston Red
    Evil Sunz Scarlet
    Wildrider Red
    Fire Dragon Bright
    Leviathan Purple wash

I worked through the red/orange paints there in order top to bottom, and selectively shaded crevices with thinned down Leviathan Purple as necessary.

    Hope that helps!

The Screaming Antelope looks great- really gross and I like the eyes! The not-Sicarian Ruststalker is looking promising with ghoul body- definitely add some mechanical tendrils swirling round it to add menace, maybe some torn up cloth? The sorcerer is great- his hunch in particular is rather nasty looking. On the Inq28 -pretty sure Atia is hinting it will get a specialist games release at some point- I keep coming across really cool conversions for it so its quite tempting [although I'm a bit xenos focused]- look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Re: The Hobby Desk and Back Again: A Log by Doi

I've finally had a free morning so I've been working on some more Kingdom Death stuff.

Basecoat on the White Lion (never liked working in the Bleached Bone to Skull White colour spectrum, I can never get smooth transitions).

And the nearly finished skin on the Manhunter. I don't normally touch-up my sloppy painting as I go, but since the rest of this model is staying black/dark brown I thought it would be useful for getting a better feel for how the skin was turning out. Time for some washes to liven it up and then some further highlights over all of the scar tissue.

I've finished off the White Lion. The side on pictures are pretty close to the proper colours, the two face-on ones not so much.

You can see why I consider this model Kingdom Death's worst. Everything is great until you see those damned teeth. On the plus side, it is only the second time I've been happy with something painted in the Bleached Bone/Skull White region of the colour spectrum.

Looks great Doi! The blending is great and the pale tones work really well, its really tricky to do those off whites. I agree about its teeth- otherwise its a great model but the mouth really is WTF??

    So whats next?
