Broterhood of the Shattered Spear - HH-era White Scars!

"I received the orders of my new posting immediately after the Triumph at Ullanor. We were all still heady with the excitement of the grand spectacle of it all, the grandeur of the parades, and the awe at witnessing the might of the Emperor and His sons, and my associates and I dreamt of the glorious expeditions we would embark upon, banding fantasies of our deployments between ourselves. I must attest to my dismay when I read the roster. The 189th. Explorator Fleet, headed by an unknown Rogue Trader, barely numbering two dozen craft, counting escorts, and a few hundred Astartes of the V. Legion. Still, it was a worthy deployment, and I prepared myself for the task ahead with all due haste."
Excerpt from the journals of Miriama Guelli, Documentarist of the 189th. Explorator Fleet

"Brother-Sergeant Batuhl was my first true contact with the White Scars. Although his Gothic was often strained, he did much to patiently introduce me and my fellow remembrancers to the ways of the V. Legion, and although his words were few, often deliberate and measured, he was prone to a singularly dry wit, especially on those rare occasions where we were allowed to join the Astartes on deployment"

"The "Tug Arban", or Vexilia, of Batuhl's squad. Often, Chogorian designations was substituted for the usual High Gothic titles in more common usage"

That's a nice start. I honestly hate painting white but I like the effect you're getting. The red markings stand out well.

@Mandragola: Thanks, I actually like the challenge Thankfully, I cheat alot, and they're just primed grey, then zenithal-ish-ly sprayed with white, then washed and lined pretty heavily!

@ThePhilthyPhish: Thank you! They spoke to me from eons past (Well, White Dwarf ca. 1998), where I first saw Paul Sawyers magnificent White Scars, coupled with the Heresy-fever taking hold of me.

They'll get a touch-up following some pointers from the good Fraters and Sororitas at Bolter&Chainsword, and then they'll be joined by another ten tacticals in a Rhino, and after that it's on to Jetbikes, Javelin Landspeeders and Outriders

Great work! Not many 30k logs of the 5th legion around. Understandable I guess since they haven't had much things released by FW until only recently, so it's refreshing to see people going at it.

I remember that Paul Sawyer White scar army as well, a great little series in the days of when White Dwarf was actually worth buying for real money. I did find his one's (while very competently painted) to be a bit too clean. I prefer the more gritty look you have.

Very much like that you've withstood the temptation of adding too much red stuff to the armour. I find the scars look best when they clearly are armoured in white and the red stuff is clearly adornments and markings rather then a secondary color.

Re: Broterhood of the Shattered Spear - HH-era White Scars!

"I remember the first time I witnessed the White Scars battlecraft well. On Ethros, the Heptarchs had broken their vows of Compliance, and I was permitted to accompany the Brotherhood to the surface along with Theld, the renowned Pictorist. Bathul kept us well clear of any actual combat, but we did once find ourselves on a ridge, overlooking a wide river valley, where the Heptarchs' forces were engaging a large contingent of the Brotherhood. All were mounted, and to see the surety with which they handled their Jetbikes and Speeders was breathtaking. Weaving a web of contrails and firelines, they systematically picked apart the massed infantry, feigning retreat on several occasions to draw the rebel forces out, only to turn in an instant, decimating the much more numerous Ethrossians with almost contemptous ease. When the rebels were broken and destroyed, an Arban of Jetbikes passed us close by, their ululating cheers echoed by Bathuls own warriors"

Pict-capture showing Brother Halcheg, astride his Scimitar Jetbike, a vehicle almost synonymous with the White Scars across the Crusade. This particular craft bears a considerable amount of superficial damage, concentrated around the front.

Like all warriors of the Khagans Ordu, Halcheg bears numerous honour-markings, picked out in red.

The last thing many an enemy of the Emperor and the Khan will ever see.

The powerful thruster, along with the anti-grav capabilities, allows the Scimitar Jetbike unparalleled speed and acceleration, qualities that makes it a highly prized steed by the V. Legion.

"As I spent more time amongst the V. Legion, I was soon to learn that what I had at first perceived to be a reserved and insular character among the Chogorian contingent, was rather a consequence of their self-deprecating ways. On our journey to the Mehradian Straits, I was introduced to Brother Tonju, a member of Bathuls Brother-arban, with whom the Sergeant often sparred in the training cages. Outside of training and combat, Tonju was good-humored and humble, almost embarrased by praise, or indeed his very being as an ascended Astartes. When engaged in battle though, he revelled in his role, laughter coming to him naturally both in the cages and on the open field"

So, slow progress, but it is happening.

Absolutely loving the Scimitar Jetbike. More of those to come. Tonju was singled out to show off my tweaked method of painting the White Scars, now with added sponging and metal added to scratches and damage. Basing remains the same though

Thank you! Yeah, Sawyers Scars were quite clean, but that was a different time anyway. And I agree, some of my brethren go overboard on the red now and then.

Thanks! I knew I wanted this a long time ago, though I must admit it is blatantly stolen from Scar, who did the same, with a different sword, head and helmet...

Can't really give any pointers aside from a thin brush, steady hands and perseverance... And if you've got any pics up of your Scars, let me know

Re: Broterhood of the Shattered Spear - HH-era White Scars!

"During my tenure with the V. legion, I was often astounded at the way their dedication to swiftness permeated every facet of their way of war. This birthed unorthodox solutions quite unlike any I had seen in my previous deployment with the XVIII. legion. Where the Salamanders would break an enemy formation by driving a wedge of their heaviest infantry into the enemy lines, the V. would probe the enemy positions at great length, before deploying their own linebreakers. Often, these came in the shape of the dread Manghudai. Mounted on Outrider bikes, often sporting twinlinked Plasma Guns and equipped with a plethora of Power Tulwars and other fearsome close-combat weapons, they would crash headlong into enemy formations, after these had been brougt into a suitable state of disarray, harrowed by the faster skimmers and jetbikes. I first became acquainted with the Manghudai of Ukchulban after the conclusion of the Ethrosian Compliance, when Jeremiah Theld presented us with the vid- and pict-capts he had acquired after "disappearing" from his Legion escort at the battle of Ikren Harbour."
Excerpt from the journals of Miriama Guelli

Ukchulban epitomized the Manghudai's dedication to the traditional Chogorian way of war, wielding a Guan-dao, or swordstaff, the reach and leverage of a poleaxe married to speed and maneuverability of a sword.

Denghul bearing the signature curved Chainsabre often seen amongst the Chogorians of the Brotherhoods.

Kundek and Jaghul both bearing finely wrought Power Sabres.

So, after a well-deserved break after the ETL, I've gone back and started taking (better) photos of my completions, adding fluff and a few finishing touches here and there as well. [/center]

Re: Broterhood of the Shattered Spear - HH-era White Scars!

Even over the howling wind, Golchu could hear the soft hum of the antigravitational plating, the reassuring murmur a constant companion on his decades of hunting. On this day, the maze-like valleys of the Armethica was their hunting ground, rocky canyons and ravines with only the faintest trickle of water running below them. Pushing the Javelin through another hairpin-turn, he finally caught sight of Bochai and his speeder. "He'll beat us to the kill", Aighur stated, the slightest tremor of irritability filtering through the vox. "He will regret his impatience, they must be expecting us to return". As the twin speeders swerved into a wide, boulder-strewn depression, Golchus prediction came true. The Ethrossian convoy were ready, having abandoned the three wrecked crawlers, digging in under a rocky overhang, with the four remaining walkers cycling for targets, even as the infantry around them swiveled their rifles to bear. Bochai still managed to fire first, twin lances of searing light flashing out at the foremost Crawler, the quadruped walker exploding even as Hughal added his heavy bolter-fire to the fusillade. The remaining Ethrossian walkers wasted no time, their accelerator-cannons sending a hail of hypervelocity munitions at the Javelin. Bochai was good, Golchu had to give him that, as he swerved and banked to evade the incoming firestorm, but the enemy gunners still found their mark, the starboard lascannon rupturing in a hail of debris and fire. Capitalizing on his brothers' lack of luck, Golchu swept in low, lascannons lashing out again and again, one Ethrossian crawler blasted clean off its four, piston-driven legs, another toppling as its munitions store went up, ripping off two legs in the process. By then, Bochai had regained control, and the two Javelins both swept out in a wide turn, the last target gained all but simultaneously. Three searing bolts of light struck it, a hail of shrapnel scything through the closes infantry, the remainder scattering as best they could, even as the heavy bolters swept over them. Golchu opened the vox "Make the report brother, but make sure to explain why you are short a lascannon now". "I will, as long as you tell them who got the first kill". Bochais laughter seemed to linger on the vox as they sped onwards, again racing to find worthy prey.

Doublepost, but whatevs. Bringing the log up to date slowly while waiting for my next round of purchases.

Awesome, awesome stuff. Glad to have the forum and these great 30K logs back

How are those curved chain sabres made? Do you sculpt them yourself or can they be bought somewhere?

"We stood on one of the major flight-decks of the Triumphant. To my right Jeremiah Theld, pictograph ready for the arrival of the commander of the Astartes contingent, while on my left the bespectacled figure of Bertimon D'hust, Arcoquill dancing across the pages as he committed the scene before us to parchment. Standing sharply to attention in front of us were the military leadership of the expedition, an honour guard of forty Bosporus Grenadiers, and Vikhard Houtremian himself, the Rogue Trader seeming more agitated than I had ever seen him before. A single note blared from the sirens, and all fell quiet as a single craft soared through the atmospheric shielding, setting down in a storm of backwash that set the banners and pennants of the honourguard fluttering. With hissing hydraulics, the forward ramp lowered, and that was when I saw him first, resplendent in his armour of white and polished bronze, Tenghudai Khan and his brotherhood had joined the 189. Expeditionary Fleet."
