Iron Kid's Trench Themed Astra Militarum

    Hello!

I started a new guard army a few months ago and decided to share it on the inerwebs. I wanted to really make an army with a specific theme. So the theme behind it is that they exist on a feudal world that has just made contact with the imperium. The population has been given weapons and machinery from the astra militarum but still use their greatcoats and carriages (hence the trench theme). The army is heavily converted where multiple 3rd party and different gamesworkshop kits make up the infantry. Below is the army so far:

They are all in different stages of completion. I will post more photos of completed models soon!

I decided to paint the tanks brown as I think it contrasts nicely with the infantry green colours.

I decided to do a alter the look of the wyverns (a conversion I saw on another website) as I don't like the look of the original model. This conversion makes the tank look more like an artillery vehicle in my opinion.

    More to come!

    Hello

Built a few more astra militarum yesterday night. These ones are mostly special units:

These are some HQ units. from left to right we have a vox caster, commander, and a medic:

Next are my veterans. I built them with carapace armour. I really like the conversions here as they can be distinguished from my other troops but still fit the theme of the rest of the army.

Re: Iron Kid's Trench Themed Astra Militarum

    Hello!

As I think I've stated, my army is going to be quite infantry heavy. As such, I have started painting a large number of troops. The ones pictured below will be the first phase of troops. I think this is approximately 50 guardsmen and I may continue to build and paint more depending on how well the army turns out.

Since the models are made from the bretonnian range, I have been searching and purchasing the models from ebay and from friends as the range has been discontinued.

Anyways, here's a picture of the infantry in different stages of being painted:

Next I will post a completed heavy weapons team once I finish painting them - stay tuned!

I bought some carriages from a third party models producer called curious constructs. I used these because it fits with the theme of the army more - I am quite happy with how they are turning out.

I am in the process of painting 2 more to make the squad but I just wanted to show the first one. More to come!

Re: Iron Kid's Trench Themed Astra Militarum

Thanks, Sauragnmon! Yeah, I've made sure the majority of the models in my army are unique and fit the theme of a middle ages world (aka, feudal world).

I also finished my heavy weapons squad tonight:

These guys will make up the heavy weapons portion of my 30 man blob squad. I am building a 1000 point army to start with. In it will be the blob squad, 2 mechanized melta vets, a company command squad in chimera, and a wyvern battery (see above). The army will also include inquisitor coteaz who will be a buffer for my blob squad. I am in the first stages of painting him so when I finish, I will post the model!

Great work on those autocannons.. love me my thump guns.

Your Wyverns are so much better than the base model which makes no sense in its design. Reminds me of a Thud Gun. My own Wyvern's a Chimera hull bashed with the rocket launchers off a 1/35 Stuka Zu Fuss, the hull of which will be converted into my Taurox for one of my Stormtrooper units.

Re: Iron Kid's Trench Themed Astra Militarum

    Thanks for the comments, guys!

Like I said, the wyvern conversion was just something I pulled from another blog - but the results are great! I'm not a fan of the original model either so it was nice that this conversion existed!

Yeah, I am quite productive with the army so far. Today I finished my aegis defense line (I know I promised coteaz next but I need to purchase a few paints to finish him off!):

Not EXACTLY part of my army but a very important component of the dynamics of the list.

Looking good.. I'd be tempted to add some sandbags around it.. make it look a bit more trenchy.. but that'd take some other processes and equipment.

Re: Iron Kid's Trench Themed Astra Militarum

    Hello, again!

Bit of an update on my progress - I decided to put off Coteaz a bit more (still waiting on paints) and decided to paint my first platoon command squad:

Size:	321.6 KB
ID:	228037I liked how this turned out and I decided to use some decals (on the flag).

I also have a little bit of a problem with the army that I'd like some advice on. As stated before, the army will be infantry heavy. Because of this, I am planning to have 2-3 platoons in each of my armies. I am wondering if anyone has advice on distinguishing the guardsmen squads. For the platoons, I will paint either red, blue, or yellow designs on the shield parts of the models. But these are only on sergeants and special models. Does anyone have advice for painting distinguishing features on the guardsmen? I was thinking something subtle like a dot on their helmets or maybe inscriptions on their shoulder pads. any ideas?

Additionally, progress on my army will be halted as I am getting involved in a kill team campaign and will be focused on painting the units within it. The rules for the campaign are from the Heralds of Ruin site which means that I can field different units that act independently. This is my campaign force so far:

The first models I'll paint will be the ratlings (front and center). Ratlings are great for campaigns imo. They infiltrate, have high ballistic skill, stealth, and they can run after shooting - perfect for kill team! I did a little head swap with them and will post better more completed models once I finish painting these guys

Looking good, man. The flag turned out well, and the Platoon HQ has a good layout. I'm guessing the pan helmets are going to be a Vet squad, since they're slinging shotguns? Looking forward to the Ratlings. Armored Sentinel, going with plasma?

I'd say shoulder pads are a good way to distinguish the platoons.

Always love the Bretonnian/Guardsman conversions, ever since seeing the Genswick Rifles in that old White Dwarf article. Keep up the good work!

Yup! The flag bearer is currently my favourite model in the army. And, yeah, the panned helmets are going to be grenadier vets. The sentinel is actually just a scout sentinel but I wanted it to be enclosed because I just like the look of the enclosed sentinel. In the kill team rules, you can only take a scout sentinel which means I can't take plasma cannons

Thanks, man! Yeah, not exactly the most original idea but it is definitely a unique army and they look great! yeah, I was thinking of shoulder pad designs but I like how the iron looks on them - I may rumage through the original guard decals too for either shoulder or helmet design. I think I might just stick with dots on the helmets. I think I'll post some test models next.
