Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

Hey guys, with the forum up and running again I thought I'd get around to uploading my current projects. Those being a re-paint and expansion on my Night Lords army and the beginning of a second Legion the Dark Angels.

So onto what I've been up too in the darkness that was no Warseer.

So the initial plan was to work on the re-paint as a break from painting an Iron Warriors army. That didn't exactly work out as planned. As the new paint scheme below is carried out by painting them as if I was working on the Iron Warriors. Working up and highlighting metalics before adding the Night Lord’s Blue from Forgeworld. Break from metalics, not so much.

So on to the pretty pictures. (note some not so pretty... Camera is terrible)

The first completed Tactical squad for the Night Lords in the new scheme.

Model wise, I’m trying to keep most of the Raptor helms for squad and independent characters. I’m quite liking using a dark metalic as the other colour to break up all the blue as shown on the Apothecary. In the previous version I went for the cream colours of the support troops found in Book 2, but I felt this works better.

The slow process of bringing the former army up to the same scheme. With the first being a Terror Squad.

One thing I've found is for some reason the scheme doesn't seem to work as well on the resin troops, compared to the plastic marines in the first image.

I ended up with this alternate scheme completely by accident. The metal parts came about as I went over the first failed attempt with the Night Lords Blue on the main hull. While re-applying the darkened boltgun metal I realised how much I liked it and slowly working it up to what is above.
I think it works well, and fits in with the infantry where I’m using dark metallics instead of black armour panels.

Not the most exciting of logs, more to come (rather not stick it all in one post) after all, while Warseer was down I didn't really have the excuse of it distracting me.

YOUR PICTURES ARE WORKING!!! How can this be?

Anyways, they look brilliant. Always had a soft spot for the sons of Kurze.
The Psycho, Shield-Commandant of the Imperial Fists 284 Storm Battalion, Son of Dorn, and Blood-brother of the Bolter and Chainsword.
I was forged in the fires of pre-Unity Nor-Meric, in Seyatl of the Kascad. Not in the hive, no, in the sprawls beyond. On the King's Line, the Border Lands, beyond the Northern Gate. A land of sea-salt and ash. That's where I was born. Here is where I will someday die.

Re: Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

Haha I did wonder if they would work, and thankyou

Most of the Night Lords are in various states of being updated the majority of them wont be shown until they're completed. So lots of progress, but nothing to show for them yet. These two are the last couple Night Lords for a little while as the First Legion takes over for a little bit. Mainly because I got distracted and an evening talking Heresy fired me up for the second force. Bright side is this brings me up to current.

The Bridge was silent. As Silent as a cruiser could manage.
The background hum of Engines coming to life decks below. Coupled with the dying hum of the Warp generators powering down. The murmur of crewmen and their assigned Servitors. Yet it was silence in it’s own way. Background that could be forgotten.
He raised his eyes to take in the vast bridge. Darkness reigned across the deck, save for pools of light over the mortal’s stations. Islands in the Darkness.
He could feel the questioning gazes when one of the crew looked to the shadowed throne. Questioning what course of action will follow. Those of his brothers stationed on the deck were something else. He knew that they awaited the order.

    The Order.
The crusade fleet had only just materialized into the backwater system, the system was marked as a major trading hub in the Ages past, yet even from the most basic scans the system was stripped of life millennia before. Barren.
Within an hour of arriving, with the vanguard only just making headway into the system the Master of Astropaths came before him. A look of resignation upon his features. handing him a note before walking from the bridge like that of an old hermit, as if all 112 years had finally caught up with man.
    The message was simple.
Civil War. A blanket broadcast in 8th Legion code. For all those too far to heed the call. Freedom. To hunt, and be the terror in the dark.

Movement to his left brought him back to the present, and the relative silence of the Bridge.
‘My Lord.’ Nervousness bled from the mortal, yet it wasn’t pure, another feeling entwined, anticipation.
'The package will soon touch down’.
Without glancing at the Naval rating he came to his feet, armour servos humming softly. Haren’all, Commander of the 469th Expeditionary Fleet and Captain of the 85th Company, Night Lord Legion, smiled behind his faceplate.
Leaving the Dais, Haren'all strode the short distance to the Holograph projector below. The fleet’s movements shown and mapped, as always in gold. All but three, three familiar vessels now coloured red.
The Terra Unbound, and it’s two escort ships.

Decades ago, when the Legion Laid Nostromo to ruin, the Legion gathered. And then, scattered to the edges of the Imperium, crusading away from the Imperium’s gaze. Yet not all were free to do so. The 85th, like several fleets were simply too far to heed the summons and the scattering. With the Legion gone the Imperium wished to know when the Eighth Primarch returned. As such those few fleets remaining were reinforced. Unofficially, they were given watchers.

Arranging the shuttle transfer was as simple as requesting a meeting. To discuss the Astropathic message, from a command long missing. Which is why the shuttle craft was coming into the secondary hanger closest to the bridge. Neither commander had hidden the fact one was placed to watch the other. Yet as the years went on the roughness had softened.
Those thoughts played through his mind as he watched the small vessel’s marker vanish as it entered the dock.
    'Get me a link’
The look of surprise on the closest crewman lasted a second before passing the order on.
    A brief moment later.
    'The link is active sir’
On the screen a proud warrior of the VII in armour of gold appeared.
'Agony, I am awaiting your Captain as of this minute, what is the meaning of this?’
Harren'all stepped from the shadows at the edge of the projection plate.
    'I am sorry Cousin.’

The shock of his appearance was quickly hidden beneath suspicion.
'What is the meaning of this Harren, if you’re there who is upon that shuttle? What madness was in that message?’
A brief nod of the golden glad warrior to someone off screen, caused shouts to come from across the Angony’s bridge.
    'Shields have lit!’
'Power in the Unbound’s engines is coming live!’
Removing his helm Harren'all rested his arms over the projector so only his upper body was visable.
Around him the bridge came to life as weapons and shields were raised in reply to the 'Terra Unbound’
He smiled, yet it never reached his eyes.
    Speaking sofly.
    'I am sorry cousin.
We have crusaded far from our fathers and forged bonds many of our legion would scorn, and yet.’
    He sighed.
'And yet you are a brother to me, word will soon reach us of betrayal. But I am my father’s son.
We stand in Midnight Clad, goodbye my friend, and may this be swift.’
Shocked reigned surpreme for a handful of seconds before the Unbound’s captain grasped the true meaning.
At that moment the atomic payload disquised upon the shuttle detonated. The resulting explosion vaporised the forward hull of the warship. Secondary explosions ripped through the vessel, ship magazines were consumed adding their own fire to the explosion.
Nor was it consigned just to the cruiser, one of the escorts. 'Emmersary’ caught the edge, shattering its prow and causing it to spin off course. Into the waiting guns of the expeditionary fleet. The second escort faired little better, managing to launch a hasty payload before being overwhelmed.
As the explosions began to die down, the Bridge of the Agony of Regrets finally breathed into life.
'Terra Unbound, Status : Wreck. Confirmed, all lives lost’
'Bring us about, ship master. It is time we reminded the Imperium of the Eighth.’
As he sat himself back upon the throne. Almost to himself he whispered.
'They created us, and then unleashed us upon the Galaxy. Let them see their children return to the cradle.’

Across the ship and indeed the fleet. The ships made ready. The human crew and oath bound forces looked on and carried out their orders with worry and anticipation at what was to come, a few across the fleet challenged the Astartes and were crushed. A few hundred in all. To the thousands that crewed or were being transported it was a worthless figure.
For the Astartes spread amongst the fleet. It was something to be relished. From the newest inductee to the veteran. They were coming home, to those that had at first praised them and at the time of the scattering called for censure. It was time the Imperium learned just what they had unleashed.

For the Horus Heresy had begun.

We'll forget the lack of Legion pads, I still need to do a pad order at some point.

The Rapier didn't really turn out how I planned it, but it's complete. At some point I'll return to it. Maybe.

And Conrad in all his glory. Really pleased on how he turned out.

And a Praetor that began as a 'Lets paint something different' Which has turned into building another Legion to go along side the Night Lords.

Looking good, I especially like the gritty blue as most night lords look a bit too bright.

The alternate scheme for the Land Raider works really well...kinda makes it look more solid.

Re: Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

@Lostegg. It's one of the reasons I went for it, I felt the first version of the force appeared too bright, plus I hadn't tried the metalic scheme before.

So the last couple bringing me completely up to date. Now I need to start completing units instead of doing most and getting distracted.

Though I say that, neither of these have a fully painted unit behind them, but for the Sisters and Command Squad I'm doing them one at a time.

The white I intend to go over again once the unit is complete. But it was nice to work with those colours again.

And the Standard Bearer for the Command Squad. Not sure if I'll run one in Terminator armour that often, but I like building command units.

Some great looking night lords in here, other stuff great too, just a huge 8th legion fan.

Re: Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

@ Punkfish. Thanks the Sisters are lovely to paint. Now to wait for the next Heresy big book to see if they stay pretty in storage or one the table.

@Nagash66. All the best people like Night Lords, though sadly this post wont include any. They're on their way.

So after receiving a second box of Prospero for Christmas I decided on what mark of armour for the Legion. With Mark 4 being the standard suit across the army, and without through more troops at the Night Lords I decided to turn the 60 Mark3 marines into Support squads, so I have the options depending on list.
To break that up and not get fed up with building I decided to work on a Artificer armoured Praetor to go along side the Tartaros Praetor.

'An Officer of the 59th Chapter of the 1st legion, informally known as the 'Orphans of Rangdan'

Idea I'm playing with is that the chapter like many others in the Legion suffered heavy to near crippling casualties in the Genocides, and while Terrans make up a larger minority of legionaries than those of Caliban, many of the Chapter were brought in in the immediate aftermath of the war, taken from the war ravaged sector and those neighbouring it to bring them back to strength as quickly as possible.

Re: Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

So it's been awhile since an update, with the real world taking over for a bit, hobby time had to be slashed. Though now I'm managing to sit down and work on the big old pile of incomplete units and models for both Legions.
Several units are near completion, but this one jumped the queue and was completed in a day. (unlike everything else that jumps the queue to then being jumped by something else...)

It was a lovely model to work on, even if I did ruin one of the cables with it snapping a couple times on me. Haven't raged at a model like that for a very long time. Yet the second cable was perfect.

    Onto the pictures.

Love the Moritat - you've convinced me to buy my own - I take it the ammo feeds need heating up and manipulating into shape?

    Thanks guys.
@Unwanted. I was surprised there wasn't a few already up.
@Punkfish. You guessed right, I hoped they would come already shaped, especially seeing one arm is attached to the body so posing wouldn't of been an issue. But it really is a lovely model.

Re: Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

So I managed to complete another unit this week. Five terminators in Midnight Clad. Weapon loadout most likely terrible, but just wanted to build something different than the two units in the Terror List.

Still unsure on the use of the etched brass, the idea was to try and make them not appear plain, but think I should of played around more before do it.

Next from of the pile of shame will most likely be some tactical for the Night Lords, and a unit of Dark Angel Vets, both have been glaring at me while I do anything but paint. Working on the Terminators, feels like I've got the hobby mojo back again so hopefully that pile will disappear.

@ Nagash66. Thanks dude, really like how your Blood Angels are turning out.

Re: Angels in Black and the Terrors of the Night.

    What's this, I'm back already?

Managed to sit down and focus on this today. It's sat watching me for a little while on the painting table.

I decided to make the Primus one of the few Calibanite Legionaries within the company. Green pads, but I decided I would only use the Dark Angel helmets for the Caliban born. The silver armour came from the thought that white sometimes would replace silver in regards to heraldry, and if that could apply to some of the Astartes images we've seen.

    Primus Apothecary Israfel.

Looooving that Primus, a nice contrast to the Terrans.

And the Terror-Tartaros are looking good, though maybe some slight highlights to the Brass Etch would tick them over to great?

And I'm back. I decided to kick off another project to give me something different to marines, true it's another project to add to the two already in the log. But, the idea is working on these will stop me burning out on the Marines. So I'm able to rotate between them.

The background for these guys is still in the notebook stage, but it's coming a long well.

So here's the command section for my Solar. Raised from the Aegea system. (part of the in development, unsure if I want that as the Capital planet or the name of the System.)
