    Christmas films

    Anyone have any recommendations?

Putting together a small list of films to watch over Christmas and so far I've gotten just two:

    Gremlins
    Krampus

We'll watch a bit of everything but I admit I lean towards horror films. What would people add?

    Re: Christmas films

I wouldn't personally, and I suspect it's a peculiarly American thing, but a lot of people would add 'A Christmas Story' (the tale of a boy and his quest for a red rider BB gun) to any list of Christmas films.

Do not recommend; it's big contender to my least favorite film of all time, just for the nauseating cliches... which are too often all too accurate. Not all movies have to be entertaining, but I feel comedies do. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation handles the comedic horror of Americans at Christmas time in a much more amusing fashion. (Not literally horror, obviously, but draws out the foibles in an entertaining if absurd fashion)

Personally I have taken a liking to 'Santa's Slay', it has a certain charme but be warned, it definitely falls into the "so bad it's good" category. It certainly is not for everyone (especially children).

It's been a family tradition to watch "The Santa Clause" as our Christmas movie.

I personally like the movie "Bad Santa".

It's a bit late for this year, but hey: it's only 361 days until Christmas 2017, so why not plan ahead?

A list of "typical Christmas movies" or films I'd recommend:

    • Die Hard 1 & 2
    • Home Alone
    • Rare Exports (especially for a horror fan)
    • The Santa Clause

Sadly the English Wikipedia page of the movie is crap. So in my own words...

The story takes place in Finland, during the days approaching Christmas. The main protagonist is a small boy still believing in Santa Claus, who uncovers some disturbing mysteries: a mining operation near his village is about to dig out what appears to be the ancient origin of the Santa Claus tale. And it's not jolly nor happy...

The movie is a partly horror, partly comedy (the ironic kind, never slapstick), and I can only recommend it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

We've not actually had time to sit down and watch anything yet after all that. But armed with your ideas, we may just do that. There are 12 days of Christmas after all.

Well yeah, but it's just a single scene. The story of why he was born in a manger, and why he was visited by wise men isn't told.
The film focuses more on the life and death of Jesus/Brian and that fits more with Easter.

They get mixed up for me. Easter is when the christ-bunny gives you chocolate, right? And Christmas is when the fat guy in the red suit gives good children gifts, and the dark elf beats up the bad ones?

"It's a wonderful life" is good. It's a drama, black and white, very old, so it's going to be a pretty different experience from some of the other recommendations here.
