Re: Letters from the Front, A Guardsman's Log

For the frigates I want to try to use a wash so that more of the details show through. I'm not sure what to use, to be honest, since most of my efforts usually go towards weathering, and I want these to look clean and crisp. I'm definitely open to suggestions! Aside from that I may get my magnifying glass out and try to paint the tips of the torpedoes that poke out from the tubes.

Captain Brown, I'm honestly not sure how it ended up back here after the move the first time. I think it happened when I tried to change the thread title. As long as people don't mind the occasional off topic post I'm happy to leave the thread here. I'm planning on sticking mostly to Imperium forces at this point. It's time to finish some long standing projects.

Jeff, be careful. So far I've come across two distinct references to Astertes in relation to home. One calls them Shining Exemplars. The other is just a series of numbers and a pile of High Clearance docs. I used that old Ice Breaker we had and burned the console afterwords. I was able to get in long enough to read one message. 'Do Not Engage, Wipe all witnesses.' One of the clearance codes matched the one they slapped on that garbled message we spoke about. Somebody things these are related.

Give my love to Liz, and keep your laz handy.

Recently some models have resurfaced that I've had in storage for at least three years. Originally I had intended to use them as Space Marines, and I still might. However, with 8th ed looming and the changes to base sizes, as well as the new PMs coming out, I'm considering using them to represent some carapace armored Drop Troops instead.

Here's a quick two hour paint job testing the colors for the Shining Exemplars.

The figures are Space Rangers from em4miniatures. At roughly $1 US a figure I'm willing to forgive the single pose nature. Each miniature also comes with a variety of weapons that can be slotted in. I'll post a picture of the various options a bit later. Weather permitting I'm going to paint up another five tomorrow and try out a wash on them. I have well over 100 of these guys in a box waiting for my brush. Thanks in part to my visual impairment I'm not the best painter, but I hope that the effect of having a Battle Company's worth of these guys on the table will forgive a few sins.

This is how these guys look before assembly. The 'bolter' is the little gun in the middle. the lower gun looks like a lazcannon to me. The one of the far right could easily be a plasma cannon, or a plasma gun. The upper weapon, well, I'm not sure. If there was an option for a Sniper Rifle I'd say that's it. That's one of the reasons why I'm thinking of using these as drop troops. I'm just not sure that'll fly. Here's a size comparison using GW Empire figures and an Empress Miniatures modern soldier.

My main struggle right now is finishing these guys without giving into the notion of buying into the new edition and the PMs. Larger bases may be in order, at least, to bring me in line with current SM standards. Anyone know of a cheap source of 32mm round bases?

Life has been interesting, with a move on the horizon, a massive downsizing of my worldly possessions, and a new sense of focus with regards to my hobbies. Once the move is complete I look forward to getting back to painting a bit more. In the mean time I have managed to find the time to assemble a small convoy and it's escort of sword class frigates. These metal figures from Vanguard Miniatures are pretty neat. The Transports sit loosely upon the stands, which is fantastic for storage and transportation of minis. I'll come up with an appropriate letter for these when I finish painting them.

I've also managed to scrounge together three plastic cruisers still in bits, with two of them still in the original box, so once they are done this task force will start to really look like something. I'm not sure about the list. This is what I have so far.

    Mars Battlecruiser: Indefatigable
    Gothic Cruiser: Agamemnon
    Lunar Cruiser: Enterprise

    Sword Frigate: Surprise
    Sword Frigate: Justice
    Sword Frigate: Scion
    Sword Frigate: Agile
    Sword Frigate: Fortitude
    Sword Frigate: Constitution

    Transport: Aggie's Wake
    Transport: Crimson Diminutive
    Transport: Oubliette

By the way, if you need some more reinforcements...keep your eyes on this page. Expect the cruisers to be restocked in the coming weeks.

Thank you for the suggestion! Those particular models aren't for me, however.

Hi gerod, fantastic stuff as always going on! I stayed up till about 2am last night playing this mobile version of battle fleet gothic. I was amazed at how easy and fun that game is to play, seeing your fleet has inspired me to find some of my own and start playing a few real table op games. I must say that I am very to be finally posting on here - so much inspiration.

Ah, too bad. Hmm...you'll just have to wait until Vanguard Miniatures will finally release my Destroyers and when I finish up on the bigger stuff.

Re: Letters from the Front, A Guardsman's Log

I look forward to seeing what you put together.

Dude, I have too many hobby ideas, with not enough time and funds. I just had the idea of getting a Dark Vengeance set and using green stuff to Nurgle up the primarily half. With enough simple conversions I'm willing to bet you could get close to a 2,000 point Death Guard army from the one set.

I don't have the Chaos Index to check this, but the He'll blasters could probably become chosen, the jet packs serve as Raptors, or the basis for some disease covered conversions. I can see the whole thing in my mind quite clearly, but I don't think I can create it. So, I give the idea away to whomever is tempted by it. Maybe, if someone confirms my suspicionson, I'll give it a try later. It would be my first Chaos army in a LONG time.

This is my latest addition. 750 pts of Primaris Marines. They are a chapter of my own design, the Shining Exemplars. I still have some clean up to do, and I want to add names to their bases. The fun thing about them is that most of each miniature is colored with Sharpies. I saw a video on YouTube where LukesAPS used them to do highlights, and thought I'd take the idea a step further. I needed to resort to an actual paint pen for some hard to reach areas, but am otherwise pleased with the results. This style doesn't seem to save much time, but it was nice to be able to whip up a mini or two while waiting for laundry to finish, or while laying on the couch listening to music. I'm already starting on the next batch of infantry...

I continue to be limited to only using my phone, so no big pictures. 😑

The Shining Exemplars are continuing to increase their presence upon the battlefields of the Konor Campaign. One draw against the Mauve Squad, a friend's Space Marines, and a loss against Tyranids.

    Here is the current list.

    HQ
    Primaris Lt. Sharpe
    -Master crafted Stalker Bolt Rifle
    Primaris Lt. Spears
    -Master crafted Auto Bolt Rifle

    Battleline
    1st Squad "York"
-10x Intercessor with 2x Grenade Launchers
    2nd Squad "Puller"
    -5x Intercessor

    Fire Support
    9th Squad "Bull"
    -10x Hellblasters with Plasma Incinerators
    10th Squad "Rosen"
-5x Hellblasters with Assault Plasma Incinerators

Next on the painting table will be two squads of Inceptors, and a Captain in Gravis Armour. That should bring me very close to a 2,000 pt army. Once I'm there I'll play a few more games and decide it I want to keep building these guys or return to my guard.
