    Plastic Dwarves by North Star

Saw these pop up on Facebook a few days ago: North Star is expanding their plastic range from Frostgrave to generic Fantasy, starting with some Dwarves. Unlike the Frostgrave sets, all models can be equipped with all weapon options by the looks of things: enough bows+quivers, spears, hand weapons and shields for all bodies, and 11 different heads. Love the style of these, solid old-school beardy types wearing chainmail and stoic facial expressions. They're to be released in limited numbers at Salute, on general sale sometime afterwards - with Elves and Goblins coming up as well! Seperate sprues on Salute will be 5 a piece, but the final price for boxes has not been revealed yet.

Interesting- string style and a very medieval type look. Not my cup of tea but good to see there are more options out there for others.

They certainly struck me as being quite Middle-earthy (which is what really attracted me to them) - a definite Dark Age aesthetic, with chainmail and round shields. Glad to see they have pretty realistically scaled weapons too. The ever-present question is how they scale up to other ranges!

Yeah I saw these too and LOVE these figures! I was a fan of GW's old Norse Dwarf range, which had many figures influenced by Scandinavian or Anglo-Saxon styles, so these figures are right up my alley! My only gripe is no crossbows, but the self bows at least make sense with the aesthetic...

Eager to see what they do with the elves and if the look will jive with my existing models.

No Elves at Salute yet, but they are said to be armoured (more High Elf than Wood Elf, but no pointy heads). First 3-up of a goblin was present (thanks to Severian and Belgian at LAF):

I picked up a sprue of the dwarves at Salute and they do indeed look very nice. I'm looking forward to getting them assembled and splashing some paint on them.

I certainly prefer these to the new GW trend of no faces anywhere anytime

Re: Plastic Dwarves by North Star

I saw on Northstar's FB page that there will be a mass battles game to complement these minis. Did not see if it will be in the same setting as Frostgrave or something completely different (or in any setting at all...), but very eagerly awaiting. Can't wait to see the elfs!

Guess it depends entirely on how good the rules are and how good market penetration is with them. No one locally here plays either LotR or Dragon Rampant, so its sort of a non-issue...

Re: Plastic Dwarves by North Star

I don't believe the new game will have anything to do with Frostgrave - the new figures are entirely seperate from it, and the author is mainly working on expansions to the normal game as well as the new Ghost Archipelago. Indeed, it was always left intentionally vague whether Dwarves, Elves or other similar races inhabited the world of Frostgrave, so that people could use whatever figures they desired for their warbands and created their own narrative instead.

The three upcoming plastic sets (Dwarf/Goblin/Elf) are only the start by the way, they're already planning more troop types and probably some metal figures to accompany them. The number of plastic sets (perhaps not from a GW perspective, but quite some considering the few they've produced so far) shows they must be quite confident in the range (and probably the related game).

I'll probably pick up a set but in my opinion they are a definite step down in quality from the plastic barbarians kit, which might be the nicest non-GW plastic infantry kit I've seen.

I would seriously consider these for a dwarf army. They look very old school characterful. I would likely fill it out with old metal GW dwarves for characters.

Any idea how they stack up to mantics plastic range?

There's a comparison picture to a Mantic orc (and various other figures) here - mind the integral bases though: http://wargameterrain.blogspot.nl/20...antasy_30.html

A few more of the Goblins have made it to the 3-up stage - wasn't sure of the first one, but now I really rather like the look of these as well. Which also means I'm looking forward to the Elves even more...

Not sure what to make of the Goblins. They seem true to the Lord of the Rings book, but in my mind I have seperated Orcs and Goblins along the lines of GW and the Jackson Lord of the Rings movies.

    The Darrow are great though.
