    New to BFG

Hi all, ages ago I picked up a few Inperial ships and put together a small fleet, mainly because I love the models and thought it would be fun to paint.

I missed BFG when it first came out (no one I knew then got into it) but now two of my mates have decided to buy fleets too. One got an Ork fleet on eBay and another is looking to pick up some Chaos ships.

So, newbie that I am, I wondered if peeps had any advice?

    I have:

    1 x Mars Cruiser
1 x Dauntless Light Cruiser (with torpedo tubes)
    3 x Sword Frigates
    4 x Cobra Destroyers

    Heya,
    welcome to the game.

First of all do not forget to check:
    http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com...p?topic=5203.0

To see if you have the latest (official) rules.

You have a small selection of ships. About 600 points. And you can play games with that amount and it gives a core to build a 1500 point fleet (which is most common used point value).

With the escorts and the Mars your looking to expand with a few more regular Imperial Navy cruisers. A pair of Lunars or a Dominator + Gothic never go wrong. If you can get the hands on it adding a couple of light cruisers will give variety. And of course a Battleship to be added. With the Mars you might think about adding an Oberon (check the possible fleets) or Emperor if you want to be more ordnance heavy. Or a Retribution or Apocalypse if you want more gunnery.
Don't neglect the idea of a Vengeance Grand Cruiser + Emperor to this fleet.

    Many options and have fun!!

Thanks for the advice! I've lent my copy of the rule book to a friend without properly looking through it; could you briefly explain the difference between the Lunar, Gothic and Dominator class?

I seem to remember that the Lunar is lance heavy and better at long distance and the Gothic packs decent fighter/bomber squadrons, but I can't remember the specifics.

    Re: New to BFG

In the link I added you can find the links to the rulebook pdf's.

    Basic cruisers:
Lunar = 6 Weapon batteries + 2 lances per side
Gothic = 4 lances per side
Dominator = 12 weapon batteries per side
Dictator = 6 weapon batteries + 2 launch bays per side
Tyrant = 10 weapon batteries per side (but longer range)

All of them having broadsides of 30cm except the Tyrant (45cm).
The Dictaror, Lunar & Gothic come with torpedoes in the prow, the Dominator with a nova cannon

If you want to practice the rules the easist way to get a game is to download the battlefleet gothic game for android/ios and arrange an online game via the facebook group. Uses the actual rules, but no Chaos, Orks and Eldar, just Imperials, Tyranids and Necrons currently.

Only useful if you decide to use fanmade/modded rules and ship stats.

The link I provided has the official rules. Same forum though.

When you use Main rulebook + Armada + FAQ/Compendium 2010 as the basic set everything will be fine when you start of. Fanrules are useful when your gaming group thinks things should be changed. Even Eldar MMS should (as long as it isn't official) be used after a group has played with the official rules and decides they do not like them.

The biggest tournament Adepticon only uses the official rules as I mention above.

yeah but since the system is in no way supported everything for it is fanmade. so its not really an issue.
heck if you want affordable ships you'll be going to recasts instead of official models.

    Re: New to BFG

I think for the moment we're going for just the ships from the rulebook (except my Tau friend who bought third party models to use as a Tau fleet).

On that note, I just got a new Cruiser still on the sprue and I can't decide which Cruiser type to go for; I'm thinking Lunar for the flexibility but there's a part of me that thinks the lances on the Gothic could be nice.

I wanted to go for dominator for the nova cannon but two of the gun batteries are missing.

Using proxy ships or alternative manufactures is the way to go ofcourse (or good 2nd hand deals). But ruleswise it is best adviced to check what the group likes to use. And starting with what is official will always be best. The High Admirality still lives. Expect a (small) FAQ 2017 and an update on the Ork Klanz rules.

So I've got a 500pts and 800pts game coming up against my mate's Ork Fleet (both of our first). Any tactical tips?

    Re: New to BFG

Just to give more detail, I'm taking a Mars, 4 x Cobras and 3 x Swords in the 500pts, then the same with a Lunar and a Dauntless with torpedoes on the 800pts.
