    Shadow War: Waterworld

    Hi all,

With the arrival of Shadow War I've been thinking about making a suitable board. After failing to get myself a copy of the boxed game I've since picked up the rules on eBay. Without the savings on terrain that the box offered I'm not going down the GW route so I started looking around and finally settled on a theme for my board...a Waterworld.

The basic idea is a 3'sq Waterworld mat from Deepcut Studios and some sort of multi-level structures emerging from it. After having a look at what's on offer I decided to go with something a little different, the Space Elf range from TTCombat.

So last Sat I was at Salute and grabbed 4 packs of towers (2 towers, 3 walkways & 3 stairways in each) as well as 2 landing pads, and a pack each of the obelisks and the soulward. Lucky for me I saved a tonne of mulla as TTC reduced their prices for the show.

So far I've put together one pack of towers and they do look pretty good. While a little flat and not quite as elegant as I'd like at 8 a pack it's hard to argue. I do have plans to add a bit more detail to both side of the three vanes that support the tower but more on that later. The joints between the vanes and the platforms has been stronger than I expect too as I was considering making some extra support but now I'm not sure its needed...I may well regret not doing something though

I will start another pack of towers tonight then maybe put up some pics to show off how well they connect up. I'll also get some pics up soon showing the start of my first Kill Team, Ork Kommandos from the Bloodaxe Clan.

I have a few notes of fluff for this world and the reasons for the conflict etc so will try and get that put up at some point.

Funnily enough, one of my friends made rules for an Eldar skirmish game based on Necromunda set on a Waterworld in the late 90s! Add some rules for grav or amphibious vehicles and I think this is a really cool idea.

Here are some alternatives if you want to add some diversity to the terrain:

    http://deathraydesigns.com/product-c...n/space-elves/
    http://www.miniaturescenery.com/Prod...p?CODE=ELVWWS1
    http://www.wargamestournaments.com/s...-28mm-terrain/

I'll probably get some of this terrain as it seems great value and ideal for games of Shadow War set on a Craftworld or Maiden World.

@Spell of Destruction - Thanks for those links, I've some of that before but not all, I'll check them out. Sounds cool, it'd be nice if GW did other Shadow War boxed games down the line with xenos terrain in them but I doubt that's likely to happen. I reakon once the rulebook is released we might see an article or two in WD then I think Shadow War will go dark, what with the new edition of 40k on the horizon.

@Denny - Thanks well I hope I can offer up something of interest soon

Sorry not much in the way of pics to show you yet. I've built up a full tower set (2 towers and 3 of each stairs and walkways) as well as another 3 walkways. Unfortunately progress has been slowed as the boards for the second tower set needed extra work...the laser cutter hadn't quite done it job so I've had to finish cutting everything out and sanding it all down. Such a pain, I just hope the other sets don't have the same problem or this could take aaagggeeesss.

I have built up the first 3 members of my Bloodaxe kill team (a yoof & 2 boyz - pics to follow soon) and I've been playing with colour schemes for the towers. Nothing much to see yet as it's all splodges of colour on mdf offcuts but I can show you the image that inspired my choice of colours...

I wanted something definitely not Imperial and this seemed like a gritty yet colourful combo.

Now, I've finished cleaning up the rest of the bits for pack 2 I should get towers 3&4 built this week as well as the stairs, then I will take some pics of possible combos and maybe kinda review the sets playability a little.

Oh yeah, I have also been toying with the idea of making my own marine chapter for my kill teams (I'd like to do scouts and tac marines). I also need to work on my ideas for the fluff of this waterworld...so much to do and so little time...

Bad luck mate I managed to score a set. Total value for money. I think there is something wrong with GW. They are giving us what we asked for.

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

    @Colonel Jacka - Thanks man.

Right, I've finished building the second tower set, apart from the stairs as I'm not sure I need all those yet. Here's a few pics of what I've built so far...

The mat is 3ftsq and I think I can still fit a few more towers on but the big problem with this terrain is a lack of LoS blocking stuff. I'm now thinking I might model some rock stacks which can not only block LoS but also take the walkways and stairs from the TTCombat terrain.

I've been playing with colour schemes and so far I'm still very unsure. I think that going with an unusal colour scheme is proving difficult so I've decided to build one of the obelisks from TTCombat for a paint test as at the moment I'm thinking the colour scheme might be a bit much.

Does anyone has any suggestions for a colour scheme?

In the terrain pics above you can see the first 3 Orks of my Bloodaxe kill team, here's a close up of these fine fellows...

...here we have Squig (Yoof), Wings (Boy) & Da Red Blade (Boy). Paint-wise these guys are on hold till I can sort out the terrain colours

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

That was my first thought but there isn't a lot of room on the platforms or the walkways. Still, I should be able to fit a few barrels or something on. I'm also hoping that with more towers it should have a bit of a forest feel and help to break the LoS.

This looks really awesome. I think your rock spires idea would work really well to block los, and with walkways going to the spires as well, yes!

    Looking forward to more!

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

@Zombie P - Thanks, I just hope I can make it all look half as cool as it does in my head

    Time for some painted stuff...

Here we have one of the TTCombat Obelisks that I've painted up to test my colour scheme, along with some Bloodaxe Kommandos for scale. I've been struggling with these colours mainly cos they are sooo different from any terrain I've made before...but then I wanted a xenos setting so different is good.

The weathering at the bottom has come up a bit brighter than how it actually looks. I used some shots from harbours as reference; the light green band is algal growth (I think) with sea weed below.

My current plan is to roll this scheme out across the rest of the terrain. The red will mostly be an accent colour and on the floor details, that way the bases will be red and not the garish green

My next job is to design some detail for the main vanes of the tower. This is likely to be a pair of greyboard pieces (one for each side) echoing the obelisk. Just need to see if I can cut them out without them looking too shabby.

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

Well I had a go at detailing out the tower vanes a little...

Hmm...I think the idea is fairly sound but they are a right bugger to cut out and I'd need 6 for each tower...so thats 48 for the towers I have!

Aside from the work involved its impossible for me to get the curved cuts anywhere near as smooth as the laser cut mdf and with the two so close it stands out like a sore thumb to me.

So, I'm thinking I might ditch that idea and just paint them up.

Hopefully I can start painting up the first tower this weekend...hopefully...

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

It took me what seemed like an age but the first tower is painted...

I'm kinda happy with it. The textured paint (Typhus Corrosion) hasn't worked quite as well this time, perhaps I spread it too thin or maybe it doesn't work as well with the natural texture of the greyboard.

Part of me isn't digging it so I'm thinking I might paint up some Orks and think what I'm gunna do next.

    Any thoughts or feedback?

Looks great, like the colour scheme as is (weathering along the bottom I'm not so sure about, I think it might need a bit more texture to the tide line).

I wondered if some aquatic vegetation might help block LoS on the towers? Get some stuff from an aquarium and have it winding around the buttresses and hanging over the edges. The Drowned Earth game has a similar 'water-world' feel to it - have a look at some of the images of the game on Google and you might get some ideas.

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

Thanks S_A_T_S I hadn't thought about adding vegetation, I will check out The Drowned Earth.

With the tide line I used Typhus Corrosion on the tower to add some texture so anything else would be tricky to add without it looking like the seaweed below.

I used this pic for reference from a harbour wall and there is a seaweed layer (the blackish bit) then a green-tinged area above which looks to have some algal growth on it but no real texture, it looks more like the stone is stained. That's the look I was trying for though it does look a little odd on the tower even with the water mat...perhaps it will look better once I've painted up more towers.

I've also had a think about the towers and my general lack of motivation. With the new marines coming out I've been thinking of starting a new chapter (I sold off my old armies a while ago) and have decided to do a small project that I can hopefully complete fairly quickly so I actually feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I'm going to build and paint up a marine Kill Team using the Chaos list so I can use power armoured guys. Rules-wise I will ignore cultists and switch the marks rule for They Shall Know No Fear and use the skills chart from the scouts list. I've not written a list yet but am guessing it will be maybe 5 guys and I can then add a few more marines and specialists as and when. I'm hoping that getting something finished will get me a bit more motivated. Rather than create my own chapter I've chosen a rather unknown one, The Emperor's Wolves (I know I used the wrong chapter badge, that ones just a stand in for the old Rogue Trader Space Wolf transfer that I'm gunna use).

I've started building the first guy and should get him finished tonight so I can paint him over the weekend. I will then work on one guy at a time and maybe do a bit of tower prep while waiting for the paint to dry.

    Re: Shadow War: Waterworld

Behold the first member of my marine kill team, Brother Red Shirt 1...

I also made up a little terrain test base for when I make up some rocks...

And here is the marine looking a tad lonely...

The scheme I came up with for the marines is pretty quick and I'm pleased with how he turned out. I couldn't find any black low-gothic numerals for his squad badge and this guy has little in the way of kneepads to speak of so I had to put his company number on the side of his leg. I may change how the squad and company is marked when I paint up some Primaris...I'm thinking the company colour on his left kneepad with the squad number on top in low gothic, though GW don't seem to do those numbers much on their transfer sheets. If anyone knows of a source for low gothic numerals in white or black I'd love to hear of it.

I shall start building the next red shirt tonight, I'm looking forward to completing them.

Seeing the marines base on the tower platform I'm now wondering whether I should dry brush the platform in screaming skull too...

Nice work, I like the idea of a waterworld. Some rock pillars like the Tianzi Mountains would be very cool. Or maybe you could do a flooded world theme, with the tops of buildings and trees poking up above the waterline?
