    Scratchbuilding terrain log

    Hey all,

I've lately been on a terrainbuilding spree, trying to create some terrain for personal use and recreating some GW designs to see how easy or how hard they are to make myself. To that end I made a test piece to see if I could eventually build my own version of the skyshield landing pad. Everything is still very much a WIP (and lacking in paint) but it's coming along nicely.

It's about 20cm high and the platform is about 16cm wide.

So with that I thought I'd start building my skyshield landing pad.

First, the basis for the platform (with vindicator for size)

Some work on the support pillars as well. This took a lot of work to get right but the result is one that I'm really happy with.

Until I had 4 of those.

each of those has a ladder in the back as well:

    A quick mock up:

And time to start work on the platform itself again.

    Adding the tearplate:

    Starting work on the details:

At this point I'd made plenty of mistakes, cutting the wrong bits, recutting, cursing, almost admitting to despair before trying again until I settled on this.

Some final details were still left to do (and weren't easy since my hotwire cutter even on it's lowest setting tended to burn or melt the detail rather than cutting it out. Still, the result was fairly satisfactory.

    The eagles:

    The eagles on the pillars...

    and on the platform:

I did have to fortify the underside a lot since I'd sliced my initial pieces for the platform too thin. Now however it's quite strong and solid and once I start painting it, I'll basecoat with some pva mixed in there to strenghten it some more.

    More progress as it happens!

Hi Dourin, I can't see any pictures either. Sounds like it will be good when you get those sorted though!

Really weird, they seem to show up for me (and I'm linking them directly from the warseergallery), even if I'm logged out.

EDIT: Ok, issue resolved. Pictures should be visible now.

Looks great! The support legs look really solid and industrial.

Mate great use of foam and pins. Looking forward to seeing these painted.

    Whoa that looks solid

Is it all one piece or do the legs pop off?

Thanks, it's the look that I was going for. Whenever I imagine 40k buildings, I like to imagine a mix of neogothic and 19th century industrial styles.

Thanks Colonel Jacka. Once I get round to it, I'll post them up here.

The legs were separate but now they're glued and pinned to the landing pad. It's actually quite sturdy since I added the extra crossbar reinforcement and can now easily hold a baneblade's weight. I might even add in some PVA to the mix when I do my basecoat so at to further strengthen the piece and add an extra protective coat on top of the foam.
