    Prexxian 3rd Grenadiers

Hello, all! I've been out of the hobby for quite some time now. It took me a few days to figure out that I needed to reactivate my account, but I got it, and here I am!

I have undertaken a new project in the form of the Prexxian 3rd Grenadiers, and their attached units for support (armor, artillery, other infantry...). The core of this army will be made of infantry models from Victoria Miniatures

This is my first time working with resin, so it's been a slow go of it. I have three guardsmen built so far.

I made a few nicks and had to cover them up with a bit of green stuff. The bodies and limbs are all from her Victorian Guard line, while the heads come from her newly released Hexenheim Stormtroopers. Let me know what you think! It's good to be back...

    Re: Prexxian 3rd Grenadiers

Here is my first attempt at magnetizing. I put together a Chimera. It isn't done yet, but I'd like to show what I've got so far. Maybe some of you have some tips on magnetization for me?

I didn't make the decision to use magnets until after I glued the front hull piece on. So I had to device a way to get something in there. I took some plasticard and superglued a magnet to it. Once it was dry, I plastered it with some green stuff so I could use tweezers without having them stick to the magnet itself. I inserted the piece, with some glue around the edges, and held it there until it was fast.

You can sort of see the back piece with green stuff in this photo:

The next bit I wanted to magnetize was the dozerblade assembly. I decided to do three magnets on the hydraulics piece. Again, I had to be crafty here... First, I did the one in the back center with a 1/8" drill bit and a pin vice.

The others needed a bit of carving as the drill bit wasn't cooperating with the track groove. I carved out a square large enough for the drill to fit and went from there:

I had to do their counterparts one by one, since the front hull piece was already glued on. Basically, I would put the hydraulic assembly in place, and then drop a magnet through the turret hole. Physics brought it to where it needed to be, and I doused it in glue. Once it was dry, I inserted the second magnet into the hydraulic assembly and did the same thing. One of the inside magnets needed some manipulation so I used a toothpick... Tedious, but it got the job done!

The hull mounted weapons were simple. The flamer was already hollow in the back so I just filled it with green stuff and plopped a magnet flush inside. The heavy bolter, oddly, had a solid back plane. I simply carved it out to the hollow part and gave it the same treatment:

Does anyone have any tips for magnetization? Or an experience you'd like to share?

Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to make the lasgun arrays any better, I'm all ears!

Hey, nitromors, I saw your models when I was google image searching "Prussian themed Imperial Guard 40k" a few months back. I wondered who they belonged to. I love your work. I read your thread and looked for the Curious Contructs bits, but I guess the old Col. Gravis doesn't produce the pickelhaubes anymore? Do you know if he is still active on the forum? I used to read his tactica posts all the time.

Great work, I'll be subscribing to your thread. Definitely an inspiration! Thanks for coming by.

Wow, thanks (blush), Curious Constructs/Col. Gravis now trades as Kirton Games BTW, I think he's too busy running his business ATM to get much forum time

I think the icing on the cake for this particular model would be a bayonet on the business end of that rifle. Does anyone know where I can find some bayonet bits, and empty scabbards to glue onto their belts?

Just primed the first test model using Tamiya spray Matte Black. Anyone ever used this on resin?

Will update once it's dried. It seemed to go on pretty smooth.

I have, it grips fairly well as long as the surface has been cleaned of mould-release.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the reply, and confidence boost. Yeah, it seems to have gone on thin and has dried pretty well leaving all of the detail. Pics below.

The brave lad that volunteered for the experiment has survived! The Tamiya Matte Black has done the trick. All of the detail is still there. I put it on a bit thin in a few spots, but I'd say not bad for not having primed a mini in ~8 years.

I'm going to go with a classic Franco-Prussian war uniform, but I'm a little torn between the historical line infantry colors, or the Jager colors.

    Use the Jagers for Ratlings?

I like to ahve my uniform choices to inform my forces.

I'd go black rather than blue though.

Not a bad idea... I think I decided on blue tonight. Do you think Ratlings are going to be worth taking next edition? I heard something about targeting that's going to make them viable... Not sure, as it's been a long time.

Rats, or rather snipers, are they only way to kill characters apparently other than knocking down a building they are in.

You can always have one squad or plt, in green.

So, here are a handful of color schemes I was thinking of today. Any of you browsing, I'd ask that you leave your opinions here.

    1,2,3 & 5 get my vote. 6 & 7 are too similar to British and everyone's seen 4

6, 4, and 2. In that order. However, I like bright colors so that I can see the figures on the table.

Just a test model. He'll need some touching up and detailing if I keep these colors.
