    Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

    Howdi

Welcome to my inadvisable plog...why is it inadvisable do you ask? Well it's because my aim is to paint every mini I own and such a fool-hardy plan may well see me pop my clogs the moment I finish, assuming I ever actually get there

I've recently been struggling financially so I came up with a cunning plan...sell a load of my gaming stuff. I had way more than I was likely to get to anyway so its not quite as tragic as it sounds. I've still got a random collection of maybe a dozen minis as well as a couple of Kill Teams for Shadow War. On top of this I'd like to make some generic, though still characterful, rocky terrain. I'm open to adding to this pile of lead & plastic before completion and I have plenty of sculpting ideas but we will have to see how it goes.

For starters I'm going to build and paint up a marine Kill Team using the Chaos list so I can use power armoured guys. Rules-wise I will ignore cultists and switch the marks rule for They Shall Know No Fear and use the skills chart from the scouts list. I've not written a list yet but am guessing it will be maybe 5 guys and I can then add a few more marines and specialists as and when. Rather than create my own chapter I've chosen a rather unknown one, The Emperor's Wolves ...behold the first member of my marine kill team, Brother Red Shirt 1...

I also made up a little terrain test for basing and when I make up some rocks...

The scheme I came up with for the marines is pretty quick and I'm pleased with how he turned out. I couldn't find any black low-gothic numerals for his squad badge and this guy has little in the way of kneepads to speak of so I had to put his company number on the side of his leg. I may change how the squad and company is marked when I paint up some Primaris (when I get some just waiting on the full kits and not the mono-pose ones)...I'm thinking the company colour on his left kneepad with the squad number on top in low gothic, though GW don't seem to do those numbers much on their transfer sheets.

If anyone knows of a source for low gothic numerals in white or black I'd love to hear of it.

The next red shirt is already built and on my painting table

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

Thanks Silverstu! I know what you mean, a smaller backlog does seem to make it easier to get stuck in. I'm hoping to one day actually buy something, take it home and start on it right away...not managed to do that for years.

    Behold, Red Shirt 2...

And here they are together. I'm sure it won't take long for one of them to get killed, it is traditional after all.

I'm gunna start building my gunner tonight, when he's painted it'll be the turn of the sergeant then once the team is built I'll flock them. I've no plans for any games right now but I'm sure I'll be expanding the team...at some point.

    Behold Gunner 1!

I'm really rubbish at this naming malarky Maybe when I've built the team I will come up with names and pop them on the back of the bases...maybe. I think I went a bit over board with the chipping here but then I kinda reasoned that as a gunner he's gunna attract A LOT of fire. I put his company number on his shoulder pad instead of his leg as it was covered in studs. Pay no attention to its wonky-ness.

Here's a shot of the team so far...

I'm definitely happy with how these chaps are turning out

Tomorrow night I shall be starting on the leader! Wow, I think this is the closest I've been in ages to finishing a project...utter maddness. I'm even tempted to build up a specialist when I've got my team, just for kicks. Having said that, I have some Discworld minis from Salute that are calling to me...

    Huzzah! The Sergeant is finished...

...and my Kill Team is done...

...well apart from a bit of flock but that will soon be sorted. I'm not actually likely to play with these chaps for a while but thats OK, they were fun to build. I'm sure I will be adding some more chaps at some point, afterall I have the rest of the ten man squad and a pot load of bits calling to me

Next up I'm going to be working on some Discworld minis I picked up at Salute, I've got Otto Chriek & the Luggage. Sadly, though I'm not going to be able to start for a week or so due to commitments but it wont be a big wait.

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

Well it's almost been a month by I finally have an update!

Here we have Otto & the Luggage from the Discworld. These minis are so characterful. Now Mr Pratchett is dead I've no idea if MicroArt Studios will be making any more...I hope so cos I'd love to see some Feegles.

Next up I'm working on a big fishman fella from the Carnevale range that I picked up at Salute this year. He's mostly built I just need to stick his tail on, fill some gaps (there are quite a few) and glue some sand on his base. Just like the Discworld minis I got the fishman just cos he looks cool and I fancied painting him up. Hopefully he will take less than a month this time

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

    Thanks Zlatan

    I smell something fishy...

I picked this Carnevale mini up at Salute this year as I've always had a bit of a soft spot for mermen. He was quite fun and quick to paint up. I'm still not convinced about the eyes but I'm not unhappy enough to repaint them

Next up on my workbench is some 40mm Saxons I built earlier in the year. I got them for two reasons the first was that I was experimenting with the idea of a 40mm Saga force but while I really liked the minis there are too many gaps in the existing ranges out there. The second reason was that I wanted to see what I thought of 40mm minis as for a number of years I have been toying with my own game ideas. One in particular is based in early Bronze Age Europe at the dawn of warfare; in the game players take control of 10+ minis and go raiding each other. I just wanted to see if I thought 40mm minis would work as I fancy having a crack at sculpting some myself; I've used GS for conversion work at 28-32mm and I've sculpted a couple of 40mm Vikings and a 6" tall minotaur. Any sculpting is likely to be a way off right now though I have nearly run out of things to paint...

The eyes are great, I would be ecstatic if I could get them to that standard. Its a really nicely done model, well done.

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

    Thanks guys

    The saxons are finished...

These characterful guys are 40mm sculpts by Jim Bowen. They were fun to paint; I decided to go with a more muted colour scheme. I've no plans to add more they were really just to see what I thought of the 40mm scale which is pretty darn good. I may be tempted to sculpt some minis in 40mm for my own game idea, Age of Bronze.

I've been mulling over my diminishing mini collection and have decided to sell of my marines & Orks for Shadow War. The plan is to start a small Primaris patrol with the aim of just under 30 minis to for a platoon. I'm not going with the Emperor's Wolves in the end but my own chapter, assuming it passes the test mini phase. I know this kinda breaks my not buying any more minis till I've painted what I have but I'm down to a Questor and a couple of Twilight minis so I think its ok. I'm only going to add a squad at a time as and when I paint them.

After the weekend I'm going to start my next figure, an Elroga by World of Twilight.

Behold! An Elroga from the Enguan coast of Anyaral...

The elroga is a semi aquatic creature that is found along the western coasts of anyaral, from the frozen coasts of the Enguan lands down to the warmer beaches on the coast of the Casanii territories. The Engu have a special connection to them and consider them to be a sign of good fortune.
This little lady was fun to paint; my son & I have been playing a fair bit of Zelda Phantom Hourglass fairly recently so I decided to base the colour scheme on a loovar, a medium sized fish you catch loads of in the game. I think she turned out well.

Next up I have a Stormcast Questor knight to paint...I think despite many efforts to get into Age of Sigmar this will be the only mini from the game I have actually painted...well it will be

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

    Another mini bites the dust...

Here we have a Stormcast Questor Knight. I wanted to go with a different colour scheme here and was inspired by a piece of concept artwork of a couple of High Elf White Lions for some computer game set in the Old World. I was initially quite pumped to paint this guy but I fell out of love fairly quickly. It took me a while to realise why but I think its the overly detailed nature of the mini...it just feels kinda fussy. Paint-wise I'm not fully happy with him either but I lack any enthusiasm to go back and re-do him. It's a shame as I had envisaged doing a small force of Stormcast scouts (or whatever they are called).

Next up is an Abrok, another critter from the World of Twilight. This little guy is already built I just need to undercoat him then I can start slapping some paint on him tonight.

Apart from the Abrok I have a Yartain still to paint, another World of Twilight critter and a combat squad of Intercessor marines plus the guy from the 40k intro mag. That's it... that's all the mini I own. Well...I have some up on sale on eBay at the moment but I'm not counting them. My current plan after the Abrok is to paint up the Yartain then I can make a start on the Intercessors. I may well build one of the marines as a lieutenant and use the 40k intro mag guy as the missing squad member. Depending upon how they go I may well expand to make a small platoon-patrol. We will just have to see.

It's my birthday at the start of December so I may well get something then, I am tempted by a couple of small patrol fleets for War Rocket, an excellent Retro Sci-Fi game of space combat.

Apart from that I am thinking of sculpting some 40mm minis of my own for a game I'm working on...

This is my second to last mini, not including the Intercessors, an Abrok from the World of Twilight...

No idea where the colour combo came from I just had an urge to use that green with black. It felt like it was missing something so I gave her a red stripe to Jazz things up...maybe it will help her run faster

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

    Behold...the Yartain...

I'm sure it will come as no surprise that I based my painting of this guy on the old Star Wars Wompa toy

Apart from the initial coat and wash this guy was painted in a single night, I don't think I've painted something so quickly for ages. Before I started my plan was very hazy but once I started it just flowed so well. I'm definitely happy with how he turned out.

I've now painted up all the minis I own except for my Intercessor squad and the bonus mini from the starter mag. I think I will start a new plog following there progress.

...Keep an eye on my sig if your interested...

Ooh, nice nice. Great painting and amazing basing. How can one paint all minis, that must be dark magic ...

Nothing wrong with easy and fast to paint. The Yartain looks great. World of Twilight has amazing and beautiful critters, you did them justice. I have not touched the one and only Stormcast I have (WD free one), they do not work for me either but mine will end up as a chaos warrior on a square base in time. The result is interesting, maybe a few patches of color at the front armor.

I really like Otto & the Luggage. The blood vial shows you know the books, amazing thinking there by sir Terry Pratchett.

    Keep adding more!!

Wow, many interesting models here. Otto and the luggage catches the eye, and the Yartain looks nice.
I've also been thinking about trying to either paint or get rid of my piles of random minis, but somehow I always manage to acquire new minis faster than I can paint the old ones.
Good job just getting all this "out of the way".

    Re: Lost Egg's Inadvisable Plog

    Thanks guys

@Solun Decius - I ended up cutting down my collection in waves which made it easier. Unfortunately, its been a while since I finished a project after trying to get into AoS so many times. I started painting a few random minis inbetween my project attempts and realised I was having more fun painting the randoms I got rid of all my projects except the Primaris* and I'm planning on going the classic buy a box o'minis then paint them, buy another box & paint... and so on.

*I sold off the minis I was going to use as proxies for my own game idea but I still plan on sculpting some...at some point...soon...ish...maybe
