Veteran returning to 8th - Books question

I'm someone that likes to know the rules for every army - I used to buy every single codex until 6th and the hardbacks, at which point it became prohibitive with more codexes, faster, and twice as expensive.

I understand that the Index set of manuals was the 'global quick fix', and the inidvidual codexes are much more detailed, with some additional rules etc, but how accurate are the indexes for codexes that have since been released?

I'm not remotely interested in fluff, artwork, painting guides, etc - I'm a competitive powergamer, and just want to be able to know the rules of what I face. My thought is to get the full indexes, and then just a few codexes for the armies I plan to continue with. I won't be getting all the codexes, but if the indexes are like 90% complete still, then that's probably good enough to be worthwhile, but I wanted to sound people out on how relevant they still are?

For competitive play I'd say just knowing the indexes is not good enough, most of the codexs introduce some army wide rules that have a massive impact on how the armies play. They will give you a general feel for the stats of most units but you really need to know the special rules in the codexes. I'd recommend finding some like minded gamers and try to build up a catalogue of the codexs between you.

Thanks - yeah, that was the conclusion I'd come to. Having looked at my armies, the Codex Eldar for example are worlds apart from the Index Eldar. I understand that the Indices were a global fix at the start of the new edition, but I was hoping they might have some ongoing relevancy after the individual codexes were released, but it doesn't seem that way.

Warseer has really dies hasn't it? I've been away for maybe 4 years - it's gone fromdozens of 40k posts per hour, to a handful a week. I guess it never recovered from the site going down which my search threw up. I used to prefer it here, but it looks like it's dead - I guess it's time to move to BoLS and Dakka...
