    Terrain Anyone?

    Terrain.......

We all hate making it, but is it really that bad? I don't know about you guys but I love playing on a well designed board with some well designed pieces of scenery. But of course not everyone might have the same view as me so please post how much terrain you use and why??

As I really am stuck on how much too make ...

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

Too much terrain just makes it a pain in the ass to play the game. Basically, only skirmishers and Wood Elves can ever actually enter forests without spending the rest of the gam trying to get out. Things like houses and ruins are just obstacles to be maneuvered around for most troops. The stuff that can be used by regular troops, like obstacles and hills, make for good terrain. A few pieces that can be used, and two or three 'obstacles' to maneuvere around, like forests or buildings.

If you worry about how much terrain too make:
Just make about thrice the amount you need for a single table (a total of about 15-25 pieces, depending on size). This makes for variety in battles.

I usually have, at any one battle:
-2-3 pieces of building. Ruins, towers, small houses.
    -2-3 woods.
-2-3 hills. I have small hills, but they're still nice.
-1-2 random pieces of terrain. Things like some boulders, scrubs, monoliths, walls, etc.

That's about 7-11 pieces. It may sound like a lot, but if you use a full 6'*4' table, it doesn't feel very crowded at all!

Well I love terrain and that it sometimes screws your battle plan but you can't have too much of it, or the game just suckes because you can't move your units anywhere.

I don't have that much terrain right now but I will have more anyday now, I just hate making it...
I have like 3 hills (different sizes), 2 woods (one quite big) and then 3 buildings and the walls & hedges (from GW).

Really good terrain makes the start of a battle much more pleasurable and a greater visual spectacle. However, after the game starts one becomes so immersed in the game that even crap scenery and badly painted minis are not noticed!

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

    Scenery's imo vital to WFB.

Without it, 'point and charge' armies tend to dominate imo. There's nowhere to hide, nothing to guard your flanks and nothing to slow down the advance. Yes, some armies can beat 'point-and-charge' armies on open terrain, but on average 'point-and-charge' armies tend to do better imo. Too much scenery, and it just gets boring though as no-one really moves and few combats occur.

A wood or two, along with a ruin and some hills not only looks good, but also makes games much more interesting.

    hmm....
I hardly have terrain (and that plays woodies )

but I love battlefield cramped up with terrain (that`s what I play woodies for!! )

I can understand a point`n`click army hates terrain (starts seeing images of hordes of bret. knights stuck in forests ),.. but even those hosts could have use for some terrain features (sees bret skirmish bowmen firing arrows from cover of a couple of hedges)

I'll usually have a few hills, some rocks and maybe a wooded area. A lot of my terrain is dictated by the fact that I use Warscape terrain boards; I've got 4 plain ones, 1 hill and 1 corner hill.

Can I vote I would like to have terrain, but am to lazzy/cheap to make/buy it?
No I think it would be fun to have some terrain right now my group just uses some old building blocks and the stuff that was in the LOTR started sets.

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

I think whatever game system you play, terrain is a vital factor in how the game shapes up.

It looks good, it has tactical uses and it can add a sense of realism to the entire game.

When it comes to Warhammer, we have a lot of brought terrain because we are able to get it quite cheap.

When we set up, we tend to use a couple of hills, 2 or 3 small woods, enough buildings to make a small settlement and one or two rock piles.

This allows us to make a realistic battlefield without overcrowding the area with too much terrain - which is a pain for those of us who play horde armies

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

A game without terrain is often boring. I usually like 3-5 hills, at least one wood, and some type of impassable feature, such as a lake, river or cliff face. I also really like farm fields, complete with walls and hedge rows. There provide some nice cover for missile troops without bogging down other infantry.

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

Terrain makes a game of warhammer. Alter the amount of terrain, or the types of terrain and depending on the armies you get a different game altogether.

Some types of terrain in warhammer simply favour one type of army over another. Whilst a feature like a river dominates the battlefield and the game is often then more of a struggle against the terrain, than against your opponent.

Collecting chaos, tomb kings and orcs and goblins my ability to use terrain actively as a tool is hampered by a lack of skirmishers, whereas I regularly fight against skaven and brettonians who benefit greatly from area terrain like ruins or forests. For my armies the best terrain features are hills and impassable terrain. Hills are great, you can move over them freely, they block lines of sight and provide benefits for troops on them. Impassable terrain enables you to protect your flanks well without the risks that a forest or ruins might entail. Namely some nasty little wizard or skirmishers come running through it/ out of it and wreck your plans through march blocking or simply blasting you to pieces.

I think 5-7 pieces of terrain is about right for a game of warhammer. That's roughly one for every 2'x2' section, though you often end up with one or more pieces clustered together to make the battklefield "look right". This clustering effect often leaves you with open sections of the board and bottle necks. The exact position and type of terrain will then determine which, if any, army has the upper hand.

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

I usually have a single large set of woods (I use four "tree" markers to create the dimension of the woods), roughly 2-3 hills, and the occasional water feature. Sometimes I throw in things like landmarks and obstacles, but really they are more for feeling and look--less about game impact.

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

IMHO terrain can provide a certain depth and atmosphere to the game. I like to use a lot of it, but alas the people I play with disagree with me and so most of the times I end up playing games with much less scenery then I would have liked.

    Re: Terrain Anyone?

The best way to do terrain is have one piece of terrain for each 2x2' section of playing surface.
Randomly generate using the tables of whichever rulebook your using.
One half of every victory is using the terrain you find yourself in to your best advantage.
I cant think of two many battles in history where the terrain fought over wasnt a major factor one way or the other.
