Deathguard Heresy-Era test minis (not the best photos sorry)

Here are the first couple of test minis for my new deathguard force. I started collecting in anticipation of the next imperial armour release, and will consist of mainly troops led by a terminator sorceror lord, i plan on adding traitor guard depending on what rules forgeworld comes up with.

Anyway, the paint scheme is 'post heresy', that is in the period following the horus heresy when the death guard have accepted nurgle and are beginning their decay, thus they have a version of the pre-heresy colours on the chaos deathguard miniatures.

Since i took these (shoddy webcam, sorry) pics, i came up with a nicer rust effect, which I will also add onto the marines. It isnt pictured as i came up with it just after these photos, but basically, you paint heavy chestnut ink splotches into the rusting areas and allow it to dry. You then do a light drybrush of the area with chestnut ink to dirty it up if need be. Finally, you use a mix of blazing orange paint, purple ink and water, about 3:2:3, and paint it within the area of the dark chestnut patches (as messy or neat as looks appropriate). This dries with more orange at the edges, and the purple ink and water fades it more towards the centre, coming up with a nice rust finish. I might post more pics and a tute when i get my hands on a digital camera again.

    Anyway, here are the minis:

test marine: he needs some lighter orange rust and a shoulder insignia (have ordered some inkjet decal paper )

I agre. IMO the super combos of 40K are not so super that they give a auto-win.

I'll be honest, when I saw the title I thought "hmm, might be worth a look" then I realsied it was post-heresy so I thought "Well we all know that, it's just various greens" but I think they are different and a good paint job too.

Its not post heresy, its from during the Heresy, so that makes sense...the Death Guard have been corrupted by Nurgle already but maybe havent fully transformed yet.

I guess so yes It would either be during the period of conflict, or just after, before they adopted the new colours. I'm trying not to do too much over-the-top, guts-spilling-anime-tentacles like some other nurgle armies, but to have a bit more of a reserved look, like rusting and beginnings of decay with a hint of pestilence. I think i will have one trooper with a tentacle arm, and the predator has mutated hull, so i will just show a bit of rotted flesh bursting from seams and welding on armoured plates, but not too much.

The army general is a sorcerer in terminator armour (the new chaos lord model) who has gift of chaos, so I do have a few spawn models in the pipeline too as well as some daemons, so It's not all just dirty power armour.

What about Servitors? Perhaps try to stick to a loyalist list and use their upgrades but with different looks? It would be cool to see a techmarine slowly corrupted (imagine some fuse between Fabius Bile and the new Tech Marine model) and servitors with organs hanging out!

That's a bit more toward the iron warriors or something i think! Would be cool, but i'm also doing an Ad Mech army so I have plenty of techy models over there ^_^ Another part of the theme is that their Sorcerer general is starting to show them the ways of nurgle, so I hope that by having him the only model that looks quite different to the codex legion scheme, he will stand out. I actually think i will start a progress log, as I have a few things going on at once.
