7th Edition Battle Report 2000 Pts High Elves vs. Dark Elves

7th Edition Battle Report 2000 Pts High Elves vs. Dark Elves

    Prologue:

In the grand city of Saphrey, Cephrin an understudy of Helglen the Archmage of Saphrey awaited his master’s return from Ferelen’s burial. He heard trumpets sound and looked out of his tower expecting to see Helglen’s army returning, instead he saw a series of Ellyrian Reavers riding into the town and heading towards Aethedon’s quarters. He knew something urgent was happening as Aethedon was the leader of the army stationed to defend Saphrey. After a few minutes he saw Aethedon emerge from his quarters dressed in his full armor and leading a small entourage of troops and towns folk towards Cephrin’s quarters. Cephrin met Aethedon in his doorway, and Aethedon explained to him that a Dark Elf force was headed this way and he must gather all his forces to defend Saphrey from them. He looked at the apprentice wizard, and said “You are our only mage in town, thus you have volunteered to join us and defend Saphrey”. Cephrin understood he had no choice but to help. He quickly gathered his things then proceeded to follow Aethedon in recruiting other warriors….

Malice Stormblade, has just finished gutting a captured Ellyrian Reaver. Truella, captured the blood in a bowl and gave it to the Witch Hag Ellernia, who quick walked toward her Witch Elves. Malice angrily looked at Truella and said “You told me this portal of yours would put me on Saphrey’s doorstep! Instead it has put of outside of the City and landed us next to a High Elf Scouting party, clearly giving our presence away. What have you to say before I kill you?” Truella replied “I didn’t anticipate the magic barrier that surrounded Saphrey, and it blocked us from entering, in fact if it were not for my skill we would have been doomed. I was able to keep the barrier spell from destroying us, but in the process we landed here.” Malice snapped, “Probably the work of their Archmage Helglen” Malice has faced him several times before and knew he was powerful, but when he was supplied new that Helglen was not in Saphrey he presumed it was the best time to strike.” Malice was angry and his troops wanted blood, he ordered his army forwards towards Saphrey and to prepare for battle….

    Battlefield Layout (High Elf Perspective):

Aethedon and his forces had moved just slightly outside of Saphrey when they saw the Dark Elf War host waiting for them. Aethedon awaited his scouts to return. The scouts reported The Dark Elves had killed the High Elf Watcher stationed in the Elven Watch Tower as a lookout and had set up a Reaper Bolt Thrower. Next to the tower the lone unit of 5 Dark Riders stood, next to them Kaldren and the Spear Elves, with the Corsairs protecting their flank, and next to the Corsairs the Lone Cold one Chariot, with the Witch Elves behind. Next to the Corsairs Malice and his Cold One Knights, with Truella and her units of Dark Riders on their flank, with a small unit of Furies behind them. Finally, another Reaper Bolt Thrower on the Hill in the right corner of the battlefield.

Aethedon, quickly ordered his units into position. He directed Cephrin and his Reavers to form up across from the Dark Riders and the Watch Tower. Next, his archers took cover slightly in the woods across from the Watch Tower. Next to the woods and opposite the Dark Spearmen and Kaldren, Renaloos deployed with his Phoenix Guard, flanked by them Aethedon and his Swordmasters, with the Spear Elves on their Flank. Behind the Elf line on the Hill the Repeater Bolt Thrower was being setup. Next 2 Chariots rolled up to the line. One Directly Across from the Hill with the Reaper Bolt thrower and the other the completely opposite flank across from the Tower. Finally the Silver Helms set up behind the Woods using it as cover from the Reaper Fire that was sure to come.

    To Battle:

Aethedon looked on as his Stoic High Elves moved across the field towards their veil enemy. On the Left side of the battlefield, and the Chariot both moved forward staying together attempt to keep the Dark Riders from getting behind them. Cephrin then summoned the Fury of Khaine on the small unit of Dark Riders and 2 fell from the flaming projectiles while the Silver Helms moved around the trees and wheeled towards the Phoenix Guard and Renaloos. The Repeater Bolt Thrower opened fire the same dark rider unit hit by Cephrin’s flames, and 2 more Dark Riders fell, but still they held their ground. Now the Archers in the trees opened fire at the Reaper Bolt Thrower in the Watch Tower, but the arrows harmlessly bounced off the side of the Tower.

In the middle of the battle, Aethedon then motioned his hands and the Phoenix Guard and Spear Elves, along with his Swordmasters moved forward. While the remaining chariot moved down the flank and angled towards the Dark Elf Line.

Malice saw the Hated Elves move forward and Yelled “Kill them all”. The Dark elves line of Spear Elves, Corsairs, the Chariot and Cold Ones all moved forward in perfect unison. On the left side of the battlefield the battlefield the Dark Riders moved forwards slightly and unleash their repeater crossbows on Cephrin and the Ellyrian Reavers, and one Reaver was struck with a bolt killing him.

The Harpies flew forward over the lines and landed in front of the Cold One Knights and prepared to charge the Bolt Thrower on the hill. Truella and her dark rider moved to face the Tiranoc Chariot, Truella summoned chill wind on the chariot, which was dispelled by Cephrin and then summoned Doom Bolt, but Cephrin read a dispel scroll stopping the chariot from harm. The Bolt Reaper Bolt Throwers opened fire on the Chariot as well as the Dark Riders, the sturdy construction and fine craftsmanship of the Elven chariot held up and it had suffered only minor damage from the hail of bolts.

Aethedon directed his Swordmasters, Phoenix Guard and Spear Elves to backup slightly and make the Dark Elves come to them. On the left flank near the Watch Tower, the Chariot charged into the Dark Riders, who moved to close (Note: Just barely within 18”). The Dark Riders remaining opened fired on the chariot, but failed to wound it. The Chariot plowed into the Dark Riders crushing 2 while the crew killed one more. The lone Dark Rider turned and fled the battlefield, while the chariot crew restrained their horses from following.

At same time, Cephrin moved his Reavers near the Watch Tower and in an amazing display of skill they fired their bows killing one the Reaper Crew. While the archers in the woods left their cover and moved forward, firing their bows and killing 2 Dark Spears.

Across the battlefield, The Elven Chariot and Crew knew it was only a matter of time until their machine would be destroyed if it kept taking that kind of fire. The crewmen wheeled their chariot and charged into the furies (Note: He made a mistake, he estimated the chariot would be destroyed, and in the new rules when you flee you move in a straight line away from the attacker, if he did that I would get a flank charge on his Cold One Knights, so he took the charge.) 2 Harpies were crushed under the wheels of the Tiranoc Chariot, while 2 more fell to the crew, and in return they failed to hurt the chariot. The Harpies broke and ran, the Chariot crew pursued and scattered the Harpies overrunning in the flank of the Cold One Knights. Luckily, Malice had anticipated this and moved himself to the side where the chariot was about to hit. The Chariot impacted on the unit and killed 1 Cold One Knight, while the crew and horses struck blows at Malice, and one of the spears wounded him. Malice was so angry he struck with his gauntlet and in just one blow the Chariot was shattered and the crew was thrown to the ground.

While Malice was fighting the Chariot, Kaldren and the Spear elves along with the Corsairs, Cold One Chariot and Witch elves behind it all moved forward. Truella moved her Dark riders down the right flank and began to flank the Elven line. Both Reaper Bolt Throwers opened fire on the Silver Helms and after 12 bolt only 2 Silver Helm stoically remained.

Renaloos saw they Dark Elves had moved slightly to far forward, He looked to his left and saw the Silver Helms charging towards Kaldren and the Spear Elves and ordered his Phoenix Guard’s to charge as well. Both units slammed into the front of the Dark Spear Elves, the 2 Silver Helms killed 2 Dark Spears, while another was trampled by their horses. The Phoenix guard also brought down 3 more Dark Spears, Kaldren attacked back using his Hatred with every swing to motivate him, but was only able to kill 1 Phoenix Guard. The Dark Spears were now outnumbered by the deafening quite of the Phoenix Guard and fled in fear for their lives taking Kaldren with them. Both the Silver Helms and Phoenix Guard pursued the Phoenix Guard charged into the Corsairs while the Silver Helms chased and trampled most of the remaining Dark Spears including Kaldren.

Simultaneously, the Spear Elves charged into the Cold One chariot. Unfortunately, the spears couldn’t wound the Chariot and in return loss one Spear elf to a Cold One. The Chariot was losing the battle, but held its ground.

Aethedon was blocked from moving because of the charging Spear Elves thus he wheeled his Swordmaster unit around behind them protecting their flanks.

Truella saw the Spear Elves attack falter and charged her Dark Riders into the Spear Elves Flank. Malice saw Truella’s charge and realized he could not get his unit to hit the front of the Spear Elves, because they were already engaged with the Chariot. So he left his unit of Cold Ones and charged into the front of the Spear Elves. The Battle was fierce, Malice used his gauntlet and struck down 4 elves, while at the same time Truella’s Dark Riders attacked with their spears killing 2 more elves. The Spear Elves struck back with their spears, failing to wound Malice, but luckily damaging the chariot. All told the elves were losing and about to break, but the leadership of Aethedon and the Battle Standard of Renaloos nearby inspired them and they held their ground (Note: I needed a 4 or less and made it on my second roll). Malice was beside himself, and couldn’t believe the elves could hold.

Across the battlefield, Cephrin summed Fury of Khaine once more and fire balls shot out of his hands and towards the Reaper

Next to this battle the Phoenix warriors and Renaloos attacked the Corsairs, Renaloos struck down 2 Corsairs, while the Phoenix warriors also brought down 2. In return only, the Champion struck back, but the Phoenix Warriors skill was too great, and he failed to hit any. The Corsairs had narrowly lost the battle, but held their ground.

Aethedon was impressed with the Spear Elves ability to hold back the Dark Elf lord and the Dark Riders and Charged into the Flank of the Dark Riders, his blade of Leaping Gold felled 5 Dark Riders while the rest of the Swordmaster slayed the rest leaving only Truella remaining. Malice attack and killed 4 more Spear Elves, but now with their flank clear the elves had begun to gain an advantage. Malice sensed it was only a matter of time until his units would break and gave the order to retreat.

    Epilogue:

Truella summoned a portal behind the Dark Elf lines and galloped into it, with Malice and the remaining Dark Elves following her.

Aethedon yelled “Hold your ground, there has been enough bloodshed and they will think twice about trying to invade Saphrey again”. A chorus of cheers erupted from the High Elves as they had won the day with minimal casualties.

The Dark Elf Player surrendered at this point.

We never counted points but it was pretty obvious the High Elves had won.

My Take on the new 7th Editon:

The five wide rank rule has made me change to more and smaller units. Also the new fleeing rules really require careful thought when moving. I took fast cav again because now after rallying you can shoot and move. Lastly, archers being able to fire at units on high ground is great.

    Overall a great time.

It was well written out. The only thing I find hard with battle reports of this style is a lack of pictures to help me see where everything is.
NOTE: my use of the word "powergamer" is not meant as a derrogatory or inflammatory word used in a negative context. It is used to describe a type of player that uses power builds

Good read, but it sounded like the DE player either couldn't play or just suffered a string of bad luck. How do you have a chariot charged by normal foot troops if it hasn't seen battle yet? I could understand if it charged and when it overran it was in someone's charge arc and range, but if it hadn't charged at all there should be no excuse for foot troops to charge it.

I also don't see how the cold one unit could not charge but the character could. You would just have to shift the units in order to get the most amount of models in contact (I believe this is how it is done, if I remember the new rules correctly). I think that would have been crucial in breaking the HE spear unit.

Not that it would have changed the outcome or anything.

I assume that the unit itself would have been in the frontal charge arc of the Spearmen, but the character was on the far edge of the unit, so it might've been in the flank arc...

Actually Because the Fast Cav had charged, only the character could see the unit and it they wheeled they would've hit the fast cav. So he charged his character in.

Also as for the chariot I agree, but with the new rules if he choose to flee he would go though the witch elves and cause impact hits on them. I was hoping to break it so I could watch it impact on the Witch Elves, but he made his break roll.

Lol, I meant that he shouldn't have manuevered the chariot in a way that it could even be charged by infantry. If his chariot has a charge of 14" and your infantry can charge 10" then he should have been more careful with his movement, especially with a chariot as the charge is crucial.

Yep allowing me to charge his chariot really put him on the defensive.
