Australian Lighthorse IG Project Log - Now with Brits!

    22/04/09
The 5th ed ALH REDUX, beginning with the new IG codex and including british troops, can be found starting HERE

The 4th ed version of this army is now FINISHED! Check it out HERE
As promised, here is my Aust. Lighthorse Project log. Several people asked to see the ALH when there were some painted, so I will put those in here, as well as some info about the army and my plans. As the army goes along, I will add to this thread, hence the Project Log.

To begin with, I will basically just copy the information from my last thread on the topic:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

A while ago I converted up an Aus. Lighthorse Rough Rider, and recently got up the motivation to finish off the squad.

    This is the original:

And it has been followed up by:

Re: Australian Lighthorse IG Project Log

This brings the total up to five. The general idea is to emphasis the distinctive elements of the WW1 style uniform- the Hat and Bandoleer, as well as a WW1 style lasrifle. Painting Khaki is going to be... interesting. Ive never done it before, but have ordered some Vallejo model colours. If anyone has any tips for Khaki please let me know!

Ive enjoyed doing these so much (even though the GS work is really frustrating at times... I have a pile of failed hats sitting on my bence), that I plan to slowly do up a 1000 point Lighthorse army. Since they are technically mounted infantry, there will only be two small squads of Roughriders, with the rest of the force being mounted in Chimeras. Due to the speedy nature of the division there will be no heavy tanks... which means no pie. Mostly going to be a fast and mobile force, which will be quite tricky to play, Id imagine.

Ive started work on some infantry too.

Finally, the emblem/flag will look something like this:

(Although the Imp Eagle will look less like an overweight turkey and more like, well, an Imperial Eagle).

You can find more pictures, and more angles, at this link here.

On a related note, I have a tutorial on how to do the lasrifles available after some requests.

Ok, now for some more up-to-date images and information.

    Firstly, a painted Lighthorseman.

Ive got to say that while I love the IDEA of cavalry, Im really not a fan of painting horses. Brown ones I can do reasonably, but other colours I have trouble with. I really cant do these ones brown because of all the tack and equipment also being brown, so black it is. Much harder to do. Havent finished the rest of the squad, this one was mainly a test to see how the scheme would turn out.

I also have a couple more pics of the Lighthorsemen on foot (Chimera squads). Unfortunately the photos are a little dark, and I dont have Photoshop on this comp to lighten them up...

You can see more pictures in this photobucket account.

Additionally, here a couple of other bits and pieces Ive been working on.

First up are the Howitzers, which I will be using as a missle launcher squad.

Obviously unfinished, when complete they will be horse-drawn, ala the Galloper Guns in WHFB. Half done footmen for scale.

    Here we have the sentinel.

Not much exciting about this one. Enclosed crew compartment (extra armour) with a hatch on the top. The main thing about the sentinel is that it will be my first attempt at airbrushing, when my paints arrive sometime in the next couple of weeks. Should be fun to experiment with my tank colour scheme!

I agre. IMO the super combos of 40K are not so super that they give a auto-win.

Re: Australian Lighthorse IG Project Log

As for the army list, it will look like this:

    -Command Squad w. HSO, Vox
-Anti-Tank Squad w. Missile launchers (Howitzers)
-Sentinel w. Extra Armour and Lascannon

-Grenadiers Squad w. Melta, Plasma, Vox. Chimera: HB, ML, Pintle Stubber, Extra Armour, Smoke Launcher
-Grenadiers Squad w. Melta, Plasma, Vox. Chimera: HB, ML, Pintle Stubber, Extra Armour, Smoke Launcher

    -Hellhound
-Rough Rider Squad (6 Horsemen): Lasguns, 2x Melta, Power Sword
-Rough Rider Squad (6 Horsemen): Hunting Lances, Power Sword

    TOTAL: 1000 points.

I have to say now, that the list isnt chosen to be effective (except for a few small concessions), rather to fit the theme and include units that I want to model and use.

Since it is a light recon and swift response army, there are few heavy weapons and no heavy armour. The concessions I have made to 'effectiveness' are the plasma and melta guns in the grenadier squads, that MAY allow them to do some damage before they are brutally slaughtered.

Later on I will probably expand the army, adding a Salamander and maybe some more troops.

    PLAN OF ATTACK:
Most of the remaining things I need for the army are on order, and should arrive in a couple of weeks, just after my exams finish.

Once the chimeras arrive, they will be converted to look a little bit like modern ASLAVs. The Hellhound is a Forgeworld one.
These tanks will be specifically what I bought an airbrush for, since they will be done in colours I cant get sprays for.

The bulk of time will be in converting about 30 Lighthorsemen on foot, as well as another seven Mounted Lighthorsemen.

However, I hope that this will be an exciting army to work on, and even more exciting (and challenging) to play with!

Thanks. I dont play in tourneys at this point, since I work every weekend. Id like to in the future, and I would like to use this army in one! I do, however, play at the Monash Uni gaming club.

you know a gorgon would look great with this army, it would suit the world war one theme but not so much the light horse aspect.

Wow, nice work mate, they look like historical figures. Conversions are neat and the colour scheme is pretty safe.

Yeah, it's a rather awesome looking start with an odd air of practicle realism to it (the guns don't have massive fancy emblems or crap they just have what's needed).

Nice, have to say I don't know much about Australia's involvement in WWI.
...and not a single damn was given that day.

at last another person being drawn to the lure of the horse, ive got plans for a horsey army as well

on painting horses, its really trial and error to get the right paint job, best thing to do it to look at real pictures of horses to get the colouring right
