The banner looks great, both themidori, whatever that tastes likecrystal ball and the rune.
As to the assassin, you could add some freehand to the inside of his cloak, that shouldn't reveal his evil, well-dressed intentions. Unless he actually moves, of course, but he wouldn't do that, would he?![]()
It is great to have you back in this section again! I have been eagerly waiting for those Dark Elves to get some more lovin', and I am not disappointed! Everything is looking superb so far, and I actually like the differing purples myself. It gives a sense of individuality to the models in some way.
As for the Mordhiem model- that has always been on my wishlist. It is nice to see it painted up so well. I do think it looks a hundred times better without any runes, though, because, as stated, it helps maintain that 'secretive' and subtle look to the cloak. Very nice.

I'm hoping to stay motivated to finish painting an army, or three.... (Update: 10/1/09!)

@Catferret: Do you actually believe that this fake website you set up can fool us for a second?
@mrtn: Hugely entertaining.Anyhoo, I certainly hope that my miniature doesn't start moving some day. At the moment I'm quite happy with what the assassin looks like and I don't think I'll get to use my DE much in the next 6 months anyway so I'll leave him be for now.
@Nephilim of Sin: Cheers, thanks for the reply. I hope you aren't too sad to hear that I unified the purples on the blackguard now.
Anyway, update time I say!
Nothing special, just a bit of painting on the cold one knights. I'm not sure how to do the cold ones themselves. Any suggestions?
hey sigur sweet DE do you mind giving me a quick recipe for the purple.
As it turns out any 8th ed army book cover can be improved by googlie eyes
Very good work on your minis, man. Great painting on the clasical purple scheme !!
Hope to see more of your work soon.

Looks excellent! Are you going to use the green over the entirety of the Cold One or will you make it two-tone?
Purple looks great too.

Grey cold ones look better than the green one.

Well, congrats on being able to level out the color on your Blackguard. That is a feat in itself, since most of us can't remember a paint formula to save our lives!
The Cold Ones are looking really nice. The purple works well with the marbling effect you have going on.
As for the colors, well, I have always been a fan of the white-ish Cold Ones with black scales, which I think would look great, yet on the other hand, a good green would work as well considering the marbling. Great job, and keep us updated!

man i hated painting the new cold one's... painted mine 5 at a time and picking out the small stuff is just flat out tedious!
i know it's not painted yet.. but just looking really quick at the picture.. i think i'll paint my next cold ones grey.. looking too cool
btw.. sigur, do you wash the entire model in something when you are done? i've noticed a few of your finished pics being somewhat darker tones than the ones working up to it.. if so.. what are you using?
Jon
Sheesh, this thing is in desperate need for an update, I say. And sorry about those really late answers to your replies.
@movin_pics: Pretty straightforward Liche purple. Let's see if I can remember it right: Two to three layers of black/liche purple mix, pure liche purple, followed by some layers of mixes of liche purple and bleached bone until the colour is almost pure bleached bone. I guess the new purple wash might do wonders. It wasn't out when I did the purples on my DE.
@tancrede: Well, obviously no Dark Elves from me in the next time. Too many other things to do and my gaming group abandoned WHFB (apart from me, there was only one who was really into it and he [Southlands Lizardmen] beat me [old DE armybook] every time so....). Also, I'm in London at the moment and all I have with me is the Orks you all know from my other log (link in signature).
@McMullet: Planning to make them two-tone but i'm obviously not as familiar with painting dinosaurs as you are so let's see. My older cold ones didn't turn out that great so I'm very cautious about what scheme I'd use for them.
@mrtn: Hehe, thanks for sharing that wisdom. For some reason, I always wanted green Cold Ones but as i said, I'm really not so sure about that any more.
@Nephilim of Sin: The trick is forgetting about formulas instantly. Costs you about 300% of painting time but you can be really pleased with yourself after finding out how to make something look OK for the 30th time.
@dwarfhold13: Yeah, the downside of highly detailed models I guess. I don't apply and wash to the whole model after painting. I guess the thing you're referring to is just the varying grades of imperfection in the photos i take. Often, I'm too lazy to set up proper lighting, even more often the photos I make just turn out to be rubbish, etc.
Alright, enough of that druchii stuff. Harry, widely recognized for knowing stuff, his huge log of painted goodiness and for being father to Warseer's Tale of Fantasy/Legends of the Old West/Pirates stuff Painters, ordered me to paint a Bretonnian Knight and in a truely feudal fashion, I commenced work immediately (after a two weeks delay).
Assembling the knight fella isn't much of a problem apart from the fact that the kit is some 6th edition plastic Brets knight and the torso is from a 5th edition Questing(?) Knight [I'm really not that good with telling the different kinds of Bret knights apart]. This means that I'd have to do some GS'ing and cutting at the waist because the metal Brets used to be smaller back then (as everything else did).
The main task at the beginning is modifying the model a bit to suit my needs. This basically meant turning the sockpuppet on the Knight's head into a sockpuppet that looks like a squirrel. A squirrel monster, that is. A squirrely sockpuppet monster. Or monstrous sockpuppet squirrel.
A bit too bright but I guess you get an idea what it looks like. I'm by no means an experienced sculptor so I'm quite happy with how it turned out.
Now for a substantial part for Bretonnian Knights - the colour scheme. With the Dark Elves it was pretty simple for me to pick colour schemes as I had a quite narrow palette on those. Now with this guy, it's a little different. First, I did a little research on squirrels in heraldry and after a bit of search, I found this: All hail wikipedia!
Hofstätten an der Raab, a town in Styria, have a very nifty design on their coat d'arms (if that's the proper term):
So I might use it and modify it a little. At least it helped me settling for the main colours of the Knight - Green and White.
It's a quite nifty combination I like much since I did Bretonnian knights in this scheme for the Warmaster commission I did last year. This time, of course, I'd have to deal with a bigger scale and much more detail in terms of freehands.
I hope to be able to follow this project aside real life stuff and my main project (Orks). Should be fun and it's something quite different for once. Also a good excuse to dig up my favorite painting Log.![]()
more sigur updates! <3
I'd love to see you do mordheim someday - converted stuff, not the official minis![]()
@Asp: Thanks for the comment. I think it would be great fun to do a Mortheim warband one day. Hey, wait, are you trying to lure me into commission work?
I did a bit more work on the Bretonnian dude:
Proceeded with assembly. I was a bit too eager to get him done so I attached the arm before I did the belt (which is vey WIP as you can see. Needs a buckle and such). Silly me. Anyway, I also started trying out fancier stuff on the warhorse:
These swirly patterns seem to be very popular and infact I like the looks of it very much. It also helps on bigger, curvy but not textured surfaces because you can keep the highlighting/shading to a minimum really without having to worry too much about smooth transistions and stufff because the swirliness covers everything up anyway!
These arrow-patterns on the bone-coloured parts of the horsemantle or what the name of that thing is are stolen from tancrede. The simple calculation is: tancrede makes Bretonnians look great. Ergo: If I steal some trademark of his, my Bretonnian dude will look great too! As you can see, there's been a bit of a miscalculation here because I thought these things would be much easier to paint than they actually are so the wole pattern looks a bit messy at the moment. Needs cleaning up and such. But you get the idea.
Hope you like it so far.![]()

These horseclothes look excellent! Don't worry about the arrow patterns, I think they look fine as they are. The irregular surface means they can afford to be a bit inconsistent.
The sculpting of the Squirrelmonsterhat looks good so far!

i really like the colours
Really like the "cloth thingy" the horse is wearing, at first I thought cool squirrel traces, but then I remembered squirrels have more than three toes.![]()
Anyway do you know how you'll paint the squirrel monster on his helmet? I don't know how this would work with the green-white colour scheme, but I'd suggest painting it red like the one on the shield.
Best heraldry EVARLOLZORZ!!1!
Nice work Mr Skwrrl. I think that's the first Bretonnian model I've seen that I'd actually like to own.
Will the rest of the unit involve various other small animals? Badgers, stoats, sloths, catferrets, etc.![]()
You beauty.
The skwirrl is magnificent and exactly what I thought you could do with it.
I love the shield design you have found. (Sir Sigur de Raab?)
I didn't realise there was quite such a difference between the the old torsos. I set you quite a challenge their didn't I? But I knew you would be equal to it.and you are. I think it looks great.
The painting so far is stunning.
I am so chuffed you have thrown yourself into this project with such enthusiasm.

Great painting, although it may be of interest to you that the Bretonnian Lords do not use green in their heraldry because green is a dye in Bretonnia that is readily available and cheap, hence lowering them to peasant-level
It's amazing what fluff the books have...
Don't worry about the green. thing. The background for you knight will be he is such a kind lord who so loves the peasants in his barony that he uses green in his heraldry to show this. Carry on.
I think the 'arrow pattern' is infact "ermin". Do a google image search for heraldry ermin and you will see what tancrede is up to.
I have sent you a PM about that.
I hope one of them will indeed be a Catferret.
