    Metal-themed Slaanesh army

This is not strictly speaking a project since the army is allready finished but I thought this would be the best place to post it anyway. Let me explain why. I have quite a lot of pictures of the army. Posting them on a large forum such as Warseer eats quite a lot of bandwidth. Therefore I have divided the army into four parts and will post one each week in order to have some control of the bandwidth usage. I hope this is OK.

In early 2003 I had just finished an ork army. By the end I was somewhat frustrated with the fact that I had to paint below my level in order to complete the army in time. Then I started wondering how well I could actually paint an army without any time limits. So I decided to try. I would let each model take as long as I felt it needed and use my other armies to play on tournaments in the meantime.

At the time, NMM was something new and cool and I decided I wanted to try it on the army... Not a good idea. I learned a lot from it but one thing was that NMM on an entire army is way too time-consuming. The army took about two years to finish, but I am very pleased with the end reslut. And it won "Best painted" on all the major torunaments in Sweden in 2005, something never before accomplished by any other army, so I guess other people liked it as well.

PART I - HQ AND ELITES

First a bit of background. The moment I opened the 2nd ed rulebook and saw a picture of the original Noise marine model (the one with an electric guitar with an underslung bolter) I though "Wow! That's so cool!". Time passed and I collected and painted a few armies. GW released two editions of new noise marines and with each edition the guitar image moved further away. Í had to do something about. I needed to bring the guitars and the heavy metal back in the Noise marines!

Eddie - Daemon prince of Slaanesh

That Eddie should lead the army was obvious. What could be more iconic?
People tend to ask quite a lot about the parts it is made of so I guess I'll tell it before you ask. The legs are from one of the Albion giants, the torso and the arms are from a Keeper of secrets (allthough most of the torso is covered with green stuff) and the wings are from the old zombie dragon. The head is entirely scratch built and the jeans are made with green stuff.

The Kings of metal - Chosen of Slaanesh

I wanted to include a unit of chosen so that I could model a unit of highly individual characters. In game terms it is not cost-effective at all, but I like it.

A doom siren and a champion.

    Two "normal" chosen marines.

A sorcerer and a resurrected spirit of a Chaos hound.

The icon bearer. The banner is painted to look like the cover of the Manowar album "The Triumph of Steel". The text on the back of the banner is a quote from the song "Hail and kill" and says "Power and dominion are taken by the will, by divine right hail and kill!"

    Rhino tour bus

Rhino tour bus with Warp amp, Daemonic rune, extra armour and smoke.

The top hatch of the rhino. The best freehand I had ever painted at the time (and possibly still). A slightly modified version of the cover of the Manowar album "Kings of metal".

The sides of the rhino. Since this unit is quite Manowar-inspired I decided to draw a Noise marine-version of their logo. And of course the tour name, the "Imperatice universe tour M41". And tour dates.

The interior of the rhino. Not the best picture but you get the point...

Next week I'll post some of the troops.

That is an awesome concept. A friend of mine painted the "Master of Puppets" album cover art on a Warmachine piece. With "Menoth" written like the "Metallica" type treatment, and the crosses in the graveyard were Menofixes. Awesome stuff.

    ROCK ON!

Bulonicus, excellent painting, even better musical taste \m/\m/ !

If you had put there Saxon, three of my favourite bands would be there! Lovely Pleasure Slaves. I had a similar idea, but my chaos rhino got lost in the mail...

@Philbrad: Just in case you are interested I have posted the setlist of the current Iron Maiden tour here. A fan for 16+ years.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that doom siren needs a knob that goes to 11?

    Now that's a theme!

The only thing I miss are instruments. Give them power guitars or even chainguitars!

    Re: Metal-themed Slaanesh army

Bandwidth usage is well within limits so I bring you...

    PART 2 - TROOPS

Templars of Steel - Noise marines

Noise marines with sonic weapons. And a daemonic speaker spawn. (More on this later...)

Sonic blasters. As I said in the beginning, one of the purposes of the army was to bring back the guitar-looking sonic blasters. They took a lot of work to build. Basically they are made from plasticard with greenstuffed strings and a few bits. The speakers are daemon heads from the vehicle accessory sprue that have been cut in half and rebuilt with green stuff. The wires are guitar strings (What else could you use for a Heavy metal army...)

A headbanging marine. This might not be the greatest picture, though...

The blastmaster. If a sonic blaster is a guitar, then a blast master must be a... bass! And the marine has been gifted by Slaanesh with a mutated hand for some truely gifted playing.
Also notice the unit's champion on the right. He is trashing his sonic blaster against the speaker. This means it can no longer function as a sonic blaster but works perfectly as a Great weapon!

    Re: Metal-themed Slaanesh army

And here is the speaker. From the start of the army I knew that I wanted big speakers and amps with my marines. But for a long time I didn't know what to use them as in game terms. But then I got an idea about how failed roadies where sucked into the speakers as punishment for their imperfection. Soon the speakers became filled with souls and started to mutate and take a life of their own. The Daemonic speaker spawns were born!

I wanted them to look like giant mutated speakers with souls desperately trying to escape. A lot of inspiration were taken from the monolith in Hellraiser III. As they needed to be able to move I also took some inspiration from the Luggage (discworld) and gave them small feet. This is one of the spawns. Another is coming up later.

Another angle of the same spawn.

The Iron Maidens - Daemonette groupies

Every band needs groupies! Some of the few unconverted models in the army. I really like the models and didn't feel that they needed any work. I just added some hair on a few of them.

    Some closeups.

The Twisted sisters - Daemonette groupies

It is kinda hard to see on this picture, the severed head is actually smiling.

That's all for now. Coming up next time... Iron maiden references and roadies!

This is too freaking metal, I'm ripping my eyes to out to show how much I like the pain!

Very nice painting I must add, and the little details give this army an awesome feel.

In a truly epic, high-pitched wail that, holding the note for a good 20 minutes:-
    "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaanowaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!"

I love its, I've played around with the same idea myself - but I always saw Noise Marines as being more Glam Metal - c'mon, the god of decadence and perverse pleasure is their patron?
