Chaos does have horns, but I personally like the Viking feel for Dwarfs/Squats. Its just a personal preference, something to make them lok a bit less like Marine helmets.

I didn't think they looked like Marine helmets at all when i did the drawing. I based the helmets on Greek/Roman helmets. If you look at it you will see it. But when i look at them i dont see space marines at all. Nothing on them is the same as their helmets. Except for the thing on the top, but that was to make it look more greek in stlye.
Thanks for the C&C. I should be posting something new later today.
Well this unit does kinda look like space marines. I did say that in my first post![]()
And while i like my drawfs with horns and such, i dont think it would look right on them.
Also Vikings never had horns and spikes on their helmets. Its a huge misconception people have around the world. They never looked like barbarians with just fur on and a big ax.

Ok heres a sketch of their basic troops. I kinda got lazy at times. But hey its just a sketch.
Coming soon "long beards"

Love the bionic arm and the helmets on your infantry unit.
I can see the Greek influence in your hammerer helmets, but the way the cheek plates and face plate happen to come together creates a conical appearing nose cone, hence the misconception with marine helmets.
Incidentally, I see elite units being more individual looking than the regular soldiers.
Keep up the great work everyone.

I had 2 ideas for "Long beards". I want to make them like Fantasy Long Beards. Where they are old vets. with longer beards. But i don't know which idea seems better. I want them to be veterans of the Tyranid invasion.
First idea is to have them with long beards and nice heavy armor that has Tyranid "scales" and such as added armor. Think of the SM Tyrannic war veterans.
Second idea is to have them with long beards of course but less armor. With Tyranid skulls and such on them. More like a berzerker.
Heres a quick sketch of the second idea i had. I was quick to show my point. After everyone decides on which idead. I'll do up a new drawing.

Love those basic troopers! Thats a lot more how I had imagined them looking! And I do like the idea of Tyrannic War-style veterans for the Longbeards, however, I think they should probably have as much, if not more armour than the basic troops, maybe with just bare arms? And the armour itself, while maybe not actual Tyranid scales, could be shaped by the artisans to resemble it.
(Love that Tranid skull there btw)
These are just my opinions though, go with what you like!

I'd go with the Knight armour personally, for the leaders and veterans at least.

nice, this is how squats should have looked at the beggining.
with long beards, I'd say give them more armor, but maybe with tyranid scales and parts strapped on, kind of like all the conversions for ultramarines tyranid vets

Alright, i skipped over Long Beards for now. I'll come back to them soon. I had a idea for a new unit and had to get it down on paper first.
Miners, literally. I was thinking of them as a unit that could come up from the ground to traps mines/bombs to vehicles. So they would be the "tank buster" unit and mostly a close combat unit. I would say Deep Striking would work for them to show them coming up from under the ground.
If you have any rule ideas for them, post it.

I forgot to ask is there anywhere or anybody that has a list of the Squat units from second ed. or a good site for pics? Most of the sites i find are for list that people made. Just a list and maybe a little bio on each will do. I want to recreate some of the old units ( yes even bikers). Also did they have rules for units that they didn't have models for? GW seemed to do that alot back in the day.
The funny thing is i don't even play 40k.

Those are some wicked sketches ShinMusashi44, very dynamic and evocative. Perhaps you should try fleshing some out with shading....or colour even....pleeeaaase
Studying math isn't interesting, so I decided to take a shot at it. Good line-art makes me feel like colouring it.
just a quick job so far, it's late(and I really should be studying for my finals
)

On the sketches themselves, they're great, but kind-of too "space marine-ey" for me. May come up with something later, the japanese twist is a very cool idea.
Check my sig for re-inventing an OOp race. There is a codex witht he basic units types with GW style color-commentary.
The Miners look great, but I don;t think their arms should be exposed. I think the second background miner looks cooler than the one in front. Perhaps it's the beard projecting out.
The demo-charges look awesome. Great concept there.

Well i agree that their arms should be covered. When i did the pic i was making him a "champion" of the unit. But normally they don't wear a helmet of have a banner to stand out. That would work cause he needs the breather, so i just went with his arms uncovered. It was a weird idea.
I don't work on my Squat Codex anymore due to lack of interest in my area. But if you would like I could draw some Squats if you like my style. I dont have much, all I have at the moment is this old picture. I posted this on warseer last year but I haven't bothered to draw any squats since then. I closed my Codex down and am just keeping it tucked away on my website.
Here is my sketch of a Squat basic trooper.

I like to draw in Heroic scale. Just like the models. Thats my style. So my proportioning is always abstract at best![]()
One of the things we discussed on the background thread was the fact that they have to press both genders into military service.
Might be asking a lot, but any chance of a female concept art sketch?![]()
Another thing I thought of is their "Slayer" equivalent - with their numbers being so low, I would say that they would not go for the Dwarven slayer (seek out their own death and see how many enemies they can take with them), they instead become the heavy weapon gunners (for rules, give them an anti-tyrannid version of Tank Hunters, and maybe allow them to counteact their instant death resilience).
In my vision of them, I see them braiding their hair (scalp not beards, so women can be gunners too - I'm thinking Predlocks (Predator dreadlocks) for a visual reference) for each family member, friend and comrade lost, and after each battle, if they personally feel they have avenged one of their ghosts, they cut the braid off and leave it on the battlefield - from then on growing that area of hair out normally.
Which of course doesn't mean they can't put a braid back in later if they have reason to.![]()
