That dark green works quite well with them. It give 'em a forest/huntsman look.
Are these guys older paintjobs that will be replaced by the brown uniforms?

Sadly, no. The Green Standard and Comms guy were damaged when my 16 month old son "somehow" managed to pull them off of the table that is actually taller than he is...

    Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

Ouch, no 4+ save for that...more like instant death at AP1.

A couple more topics to talk about:
-Other GW (and non GW) ranges that lend themselves well towards vostroyan conversions
    -Rough Rider conversions
    -Vostroyan tank patterns

My army is the 11th Vostroyan Imperial Artillery Regiment. They are also known as the Emperor's Choir because of the large amounts of artillery they field. The sound of hundreds of mortars, heavy mortars, grenade launchers, thudd guns and heavy artillery going off is enough to weaken the resolve of even the most hardened enemy. When fighting the 11th, it is truely death from above!
There are many men needed to support the artillery weapons and they will defend their emplacements to the last man. They have a strong faith in their commanding officers and will follow them without question. The army lacks large amounts of vox casters because each officer is trained to react to various situations with the larger battle plan in mind. The 11th scorns retreat and instead array themselves in ranks and fire away at the enemy with steady volleys until overwhelmed.
While horses are uncommon on Vostroya, the 11th fields 200 of them in various battlefield roles. The horses themselves were a gift to the regiment by a thankful govenor whose world was cleansed of an Ork invasion by the 11th. It is said the 200 stallions are some of the finest purebreds to have ever come from Terra. During wartime, a full half of the horses are formed into rough rider squadrons while the others are used to bring smaller artillery pieces to the fore. It is also not unknown for officers and sgts to lead squads into battle while riding the mighty steeds.
There is no noble hierarchy within the regiment. Every guardsman knows his or her role and rise to rank based on skills rather than blood. The goal of every guardsman within the 11th is to command an artillery squad or artillery platoon at least once. This experience is vital should the command structure fall apart in the heat of battle.
Vostroya is a factory world and is home to some of the finest artificers in the Imperium. The weapons of the 11th are masterpieces of both war and art and the soldiers carry them with nigh religious reverance. Besides the artillery pieces, the favored weapons amongst the troops are grenade launchers, heavy bolters and missile launchers which are perfect at fighting hoard armies.
The 11th is always prepared for war or the parade ground. Their uniforms are always pressed and clean and their buttons and armor are polished to a mirror shine. They scorn camo and proudly bear their heraldy. Officer's refuse to hide their dress and insignia even when the enemy is known to use snipers. The regiment also contains multiple banners, each representing something the Vostroyans hold dear. The main banner is that of Vostroya which depicts the immortal Emperor slaying a foul daemon with a burning sword. The regiment's own banner shows a stylized "V" with a bomb and fuse representing its specialization in artillery. There are also banners for the rough riders, veteran firstborn units, the Imperial Aquilla, armored columns and more.
While the 11th is mostly an infantry regiment, there have been occasions where they bring heavily armed and armored tanks to the field. They are equipped solely with "Monitor" pattern Leman Russ battle tanks which have a rounded turret housing an archaic battle cannon and ball turret heavy bolter side sponsons.
Veteran units, besides the artillery and horses, are the pride of the regiment. Besides utilizing the best and most experienced firstborn Vostroya can offer, the veteran units are the regiment's musicians. Each soldier does not just carry a gun, but also an instrument, ranging from snare drums and horns, to an archaic form of bagpipes. At the Battle of Kasr Tannenberg, a detachment of the 11th was caught in a tyranid ambush. While the infantry squads fought the attackers with rifle butts and bayonets, the veterans began playing Vostroyan hymns and marches rather than bringing their weapons to bear. The music steeled the soldier's souls more so than any weapon in hand could. While the detachment took heavy losses, the tyranids were repulsed and when the final battle for Tannenberg took place, the veteran musicians where in the thickest of the fighting.
No one retires from the regiment. They either die in battle alongside their comrades and the Emperor's foes or they take on more administrative roles when they are no longer capable of fighting.

I have to admit that when I first heard the idea of purple Vostroyans, I had my doubts - but I think it works really well. How did you do the purples, if you don't mind me asking?

That fluff on your army is great, Light - I love reading about "actual" battles that armies fight in. It gives so much more to the background of the force.

    Nice!

    Wink Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

It's real simple to do the purple:
    a) prime black
    b) go over coat/cloth with liche purple
    c) highlight edges/raised areas with a small amount of warlock purple
    d) water down chaos black and run in crevices

Thanks for the comment Snakebite...I had doubts too...but what other color was I left to use here on warseer? Fraggin' LotE already stole green before I get my models and I didn't wanna cramp his style! Then you did brown...*rolls eyes*...

I forgot to mention, I love the giant standard bearer Snakebite, that's a really cool conversion. Very grandiose.

    Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

It could be worse scrubout...someone may have done purple and then you'd be stuck with yellow or orange
But if you want to go with green vossies by all means go for it. Doesn't bother me a bit. As it turned out, Snakebite and myself had the same color scheme for a while.

    Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

Thanks, Scrubout. It was an inspired conversion - I had already decided that I wanted the Marines' banner as part of the model but I couldn't decide what to put on top of the banner to complete it. Looking through the Marine bits I had left, I saw the back banner and wondered how that would look. As a Scout, I had taken part in various parades and had carried the Troop Standard which had a flag and then a smaller flag above it. The rest is history...

As Light says, we both had the same scheme for a while - it really doesn't matter. With a finite number of colours and an almost infinite number of players, there's bound to be some crossover!

    Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

    My army's logo:

    And unit insignias:

Thanks goes to Escobar for some great work! As mentioned in my background, the regiment is the 11th (a tribute to the ADA brigade my father commanded during OIF). The bomb and fuse represent the fact the the regiment's specialization is in artillery.

    Some more background info!

Comrade General Mikhail Augustus Vladkov was born into a lower class family in the frozen North Tundras of Vostroya. As a child, he worked in one of the many weapons manufactorums, carving the stocks of lasrifles from the finest of woods. Where as other children would frown upon the harsh work routines, Vladkov relished in the fact that he was helping the Firstborn and dreamed of the day when he would join their ranks. As per decree, upon his 18th birthday, he entered the ranks of the 11th Vostroyan Imperial Artillery Regiment.

Vladkov's rise within the ranks was legendary. He gained veteran sergeant status in an unprecedented time: 10 days. Immediately after joining the 11th, he and his regiment shipped out to a barren, windswept planet called Taroth III. The Imperial forces attempting to retake Taroth were caught in a bloody stalemate with Orks of the Blood Axe Klan. An artillery unit such as the 11th was a perfect addition amongst the trenches and miles of barbed wire. They were, however, unexpectedly deployed near the front lines. Whether this was intentional or a grave mistake by a tactical print servitor may never be known, but the following days yielded stories of legends.
It turns out the orks of the Blood Axe Klans were more cunning than Imperial strategists predicted. Kommando units penetrated the Vostroyan lines and attacked the prized heavy artillery pieces. Vladkov's platoon was close by and caught unprepared. Emerging from his trench bunker, he saw Sergeant Breslovich fall with an ork dagger in his back. Nearby, one of the regiment's many artillery banners lay in a pool of bloody mud. Without a second thought, Vladkov picked up the flag and charged the nearest ork, spearing him with banner's shaft. He pulled a laspistol from a fallen guardsman and charged into the darkness.

The following day revealed a phyrric victory perfect enough to serve as an example in the Tactica Imperialis. Vladkov's platoon was decimated. The bodies of officers, sergeants and guardsmen alike covered the grounds next to hundreds of dead kommandos. Ruined artillery peices smoldered in new craters, the victims of crude ork bombs. The Comrade General at the time stumbled upon the nigh lifeless body of Vladkov. He was prone upon a stack of ork corpses with the banner plunged through their bodies and still firmly in his grip. Never once had it touched the ground under his watch.

After a full recovery which included the addition of an "aquilla" pattern bionic leg, Vladkov was promoted to Veteran Sergeant and received the Medallion Crimson for his actions. The respect for him amongst members of the regiment was unparalleled and it was only fitting that he eventually received the rank of Comrade General during the Battle for Kasr Tannenberg.

Vladkov leads the regiment to this day. His tactical skills rival the greatest of warmasters and his knowledge of his artillery succeeds even that of the regiment's mysterious engineseers. He can always be found at the front lines with two banners always by his side: The flag of Vostroya, and the artillery banner he once saved so long ago.

    Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

A little more background on the Vostroyan XXIV:

Commander of the Vostroyan XXIV Graf Von Kulnev is from one of Vostroyas oldest families. His heritage can be traced back to the first founding of the Firstborn regiments. But this is not the reason for him being commander, because unlike many Imperial Guard regiments, the Vostroyan regiments command positions are earned during many campaigns and through personal leadership abilities and courage.

Although being of noble blood, Graf Von Kulnev began his career in the XXIV regiment as a normal foot soldier, where he during countless battles fought with extreme bravery and initiative, soon rising in rank to be a squad leader, with nine men under his command. I was during that time, that the higher officers of the regiment really noted his outstanding abilities as a leader and commander of men.

Several times Kulnev distinguished himself in reconnaissance actions. He took part in the battle of the Lukaris systems with the Ork Waagh of warlord Eadsplitta, and in the capture of the main Cities in the Lukaris system, by Imperial troops.
In the very young age Kulnev displayed his talent for command and abilities to lead the soldiers into battle.

Five years later Kulnev already commanded a detached force that helped Lord General Rumyantsev's Volpone III Corps to capture the port city and fortress of Kolobrzeg in the Kroschin systems. Then he temporarily commanded the Volpone Dragoon regiment that distinguished in the pursuit of Blood pact troops during the fierce battles in the outskirts of the city. After this for some time Kulnev commanded a detachment of the Volpone Dragoon regiment, before returning to the XXIV Vostroya.

Kulnev was, during the fierce battles at the Cadien Gate, during the Eye of Terror campaign, promoted to Commander of the XXIV Vostroyan Regiment, and it is because of the battles during that period, the Kulnev instituted some of the weaponry, that is special for the Vostroyan XXIV regiment, namely the shorter pattern Lasrifle.

    Re: The Vostroyan Thread.

I'm right now sculpting a Vostroyan model, although I'm not sure what he's going to be yet. The pose is 'at ease', since I really like the Death Korps of Krieg Infantry squad at Ease released by Forge World. He'll have no lasgun, or at least not as planned, but an autopistol in a leather holster with something ornate on the side. There'll be some small details like the standard Vostroyan gun-grenade launcher crank as well as this (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...delauncher.jpg) gun-grenade launcher at his belt.

I thought I'd show you some WIP shots here as I works on him. Alright, the camera I nailed down to be bought appeared to have one disadvantage - it had no zoom. Oh well, I hope there'll be another chance at a good, cheap one. I'm not sure if our scanner will work, but maybe... We'll see in any case. Now on to some background about the lieutenant for my coming Infantry Platoon:

Lieutenant Krachovskij Viednovril was born in 978.M41 as the eldest son (after two daughters) of a relatively poor overclass family with a long military tradition. House Viednovril is one of the smaller of the Industriocrat Houses - noble families with a degree of industrial ownership responsible with overseeing certain industries chosen by the Techtriarchs for an exchange of a small percentage of the total incomes from the industries they are set to watch and maintain - with genetically recorded heritage origins stretching back to M34, making it one of the older ones. Upon his 18th birthday, 996.M41, Krachovskij moved from Hive Valneus to the Koschty military academy and studied for officer for two years. One thing that marks Vostroyan military hierarchy out is the profesionallity of its officer corps and the familiar understanding between underofficers and troopers. Krachovskij was picked out as an infantry lieutenant of the Vostroyan CXII (112th) and was thoroughly integrated into the 5th company as per regimental traditions. Much beer was drank in his company and many practical jokes were played on him for a Terran week's time.

Three weeks after Krachovskij's finished officer study, the Vostroyan CXII was shipped as part of the .239th division to Chinchare. As the transport and escort ships finished the warp voyage and broke warp, which took two and a half Terran month, long range vox-transmissions instructed the Vostroyan division their exact in-system route and the regiments' deployment positions on the south-eastern part of Chinchare. The Vostroyan CXII was positioned along with the XXIV and CCXXIV at a fifteen kilometers front. The first objective in the operational campaign CV.b.12 was the city of Parnol (circa 50,000 inhabitants) which had been isolated and destroyed by separatist elements. During night, a ten minutes-long artillery bombardment was followed by storming and inflitration of the enemy trenches. Succesful spearhead assaults by grenadiers with Naval air support led to a general break-through at this point in the front. The next two days The Vostroyans advanced with retreating separatist forces ahead of them. Eventually, after a dance of chases and counter attacks, the Vostroyan group reached Parnol. Elements from the Jouran 15th army positioned in the Eye of Terror sector and Chinchare PDF regiments filled in behind as the CXII cleared the city with solely infantry from a few enemy light infantry groups positioned to defend AA guns and the other two Vostroyan regiments took up positions to screen the city from offensives. As reserves had been gathered and a major offensive could be launched by the separatists, the CXII left 5th and 7th companies to hold the city whilst the main bulk of the force took up reservist positions between the XXIV and CXIV to recycle fresh troops to the front. Whilst battle raged mere miles from the outskirts of Parnol, civil unrest grew. The local IOC (Imperial Over Command) reacted in a typically orthodox way by ordering the execution of any trouble-makers and lock-down of Parnol. Meanwhile, as the 5th and 7th companies executed these orders, armoured separatist elements succeeded in breaking through the Vostroyan lines. As hostile bombardment came closer, nervous - and soon angry - crowds gathered in street corners, plazas and markets, and soon shouts and demands of evacuation were raised. The armoured push was stalled and thrown back as anti-tank teams from the XXIV and CXII executed a dance-of-war that soon became a war of attrition that the armoured forces could not hope to win since reserves naturally was on their way to reinforce the resistance.

Two crowd-control teams of the Adeptus Arbites was positioned in Parnol soon after its retaking, and as these tried to scatter the mass of afraid people, Parnol exploded into riots. The Arbites teams was slaughtered to a man, and the 5th and 7th companies gathered together and began the dangerous task of clearing the city streets from the rioters. Lieutenant Krachovskij led his platoon through the industrial eastern parts of the city, and was soon involved in close-range firing. A group of industrial labourers, having get drunk during the bombardment in an attmept to forget the misery of their current situation, suddenly rushed out of a warehouse, mere meters from Krachovskij's platoon command squad. Hand-to-hand fighting erupted as the Vostroyans struggled with the labourers, gun butts and bayonets against steel pipes and picked-up tools. The fighting was fierce, but short, and Krachoskij got his right eye crushed as he fought against a duo of rioters. After the battle Krachovskij was transported behind the lines and had his right eye replaced with an artificial one. Aftermath-reports revealed that Krachovskij had continued to led his platoon in order to finish the clearing of the city. Medicae analysises lying forgotten in Administratum data-banks indicates that it would have been possible to repair the bad eye if Krachovskij had redrawn personally from Parnol sooner. Three days later Krachovskij was on his legs again and returned to his platoon, which had suffered slight losses during the street-fightings. Greeted by the platoon banner, Krachovskij received after two hours orders to execute all the captured the rioters to state an example. This harsh act would later on cause new violence as the local inhabitants, angered by the handling of their family members, friends or neighbours, revolted against the provisorily established Imperial military regime after a series of hunger-demonstrations due to the poor war-rations.

Krachovskij continued to lead his platoon in the trecnh-fights that followed, infiltrating and night-raiding separatist lines as part of an attempt to soften it up fast enough for an armoured division to break through. The break-through was only momentarily when it came, however, as hostile armour stood ready behind the lines to launch a counter-offensive which was thwarted by Vostroyan and Jouran anti armoour teams that filled in whilst the Imperial armoured division retreated. The following static war would see the area being left relatively passive as the war became more focused on a four independently running battles. The CXII along with the other Vostroyan regiments maintained discipline during this period of rest and reported via Astropaths to Vostroya about the course of the war and the regiments' current state. In 998.M41 a monthly Medicae field test revealed that Krachnovskij had a rare blood disease, which was consequentally isolated and terminated by Medicae adepts.
