    Hordes/Warmachine

    Hi everyone,

I have played 40k for a while and want to play a different type of game. I was thinking about Warmachine or Hordes. I don't know anything about either game. I was also wondering are the armies huge like in 40k or are they small skirmishes? I went to their website and there is a bunch on new releases, is there a new rulebook or something coming out?

    Thanks,

    Re: Hordes/Warmachine

Yep the brand new rulebook for Warmachine collecting all the rules (as opposed to all the troop stats) just came out last week called Prime Remix. It also has the starter troops/casters for each of the 4 basic Warmachine factions.

The armies are smaller compared to 40k, but larger than Confrontation. It all depends on what armies you play as you can play armies comprised of mostly big jacks/beasts or lots of troops.

    Re: Hordes/Warmachine

    Thanks,

Is hordes and Warmachine the same game? Do they use the same rules or what? On the site it says that you can mix hordes and warmachine?

Another question, so are there seperate codexs, or are all the stats for each army in the rulebook?

Sorry about asking all these questions

    Re: Hordes/Warmachine

They use the same basic rules, but the way the casters for WM and warlocks for Hordes work is different which gives them a different spin on similar concepts. You can play WM vs Hordes though - saw a game of Circle (Hordes) vs Cygnar (WM) today in fact.

The stats for each unit/figure comes with the figures you buy, but the books contain the stats for each army in the various rulebooks.

For Warmachine the rule books are Prime Remixed (basic troops, casters and Jacks - some people swear by these as the core units for each army), Escalation (more troops and jacks, plus the start of Mercenary armies), Apotheosis (Loads of casters plus a unique warjack for the 4 main factions) and then Superiority (lots of troops additions, some new jacks, a new caster and cavalry). If you just want the rules then just get Prime, but the other books will give you a better idea of the world and all the models.

For Hordes there is just the main rule book so far with the first expansion coming out later this year.

Thanks for all that Keravin, I'm leaning more on doing Warmachine now. Is there any thing I should know about the different armies? How much money does the new rulebook cost? In U.S Dollars?

According to the Privateer site the new book is $24.99.

Any of the armies caught your eye as it'd be easier for people to give you a flavour of them that way?

    Re: Hordes/Warmachine

The armies are all quite different. I'll do a run down for you, coz I'm occassionally nice

    Warmachine
Cygnar - America/Britain in a true monarchy. A great deal of defensive actions, high technology, focused heavily on lightning as their signature weapon. They have the most specialist of troops, and rely primarily on ranged combat, supreme at ranged combat, comparable to Tau in terms of their moderate armour, high tech, and great firepower, trading off for specialist troops.

Khador - Tzarist Russian in feel, conscripts and old nobles, lower technology that favours heavy destruction, slowest of the armies yet the heaviest hitting with the highest armour, the best melee force in Warmachine, favours Ice effects (slow, chill, etc...). Comparable to Tyranids, with the capability to feature quite a few cheap guys, a few very destructive specialist troops, and then a couple of massive, hulking Warjacks (it's a bit hard to see, but it is there)

Cryx - The undead basically, cheapest troops and most intricate of rules, high speed and defense but low armour and hitting power, specialised troops, lightest Warjacks in the game, best at throwing spells around, uses mostly poison like effects that shred infantry as well as a high number of debuffs and "horror" attacks. Comparable to Dark Eldar I imagine, with some of the lightest troops that require a lot of protection, but factor in the craziness of their vehicles and characters.

Protectorate of Menoth - Religious nutters complete with fire, have the most magic inclined casters but not as good at channeling it around the board like Cryx. Favours melee combat and short-ranged fire, also the template army as they have basic troops with bombs as well as rockets and ballistae, fire is the signature weapon, a great deal of faith based rules and such. Closest to Sister's of Battle, for obvious reasons that are well-founded.

Note: this comparisons are just for an idea. There is none of the cheese imbalance between these armies that there is in 40k, and each army is very versatile in it's make-up. The change of one warcaster for another can dramatically effect your army.

Oh yes, Cortex Smuggler is great if you aren't anal about instant delivery overseas. I saved $100 on a $200 order, that's pretty damn good.

Its only the cheapest overseas if you don't get stung for Import duties; if, by some chance you get lucky once or twice they (customs) will catch up with you and they aren't shy about levying hefty fees.

Yep, that's something to be aware of too. New Zealand only charges if the customs charge exceeds $50, so that's somewhere in the region of US$300 before you gotta pay more.
