    The Carnifex/Tyrant Combo thread

    Hi all!

Ok I'll start with explaining what this thread is and what the hell it is supposed to do.

In this thread I want people to post what they have equipped their TMC's with, their role in the army and if they have been tested in battle, how they perform on the field.

Then other 'nid players can give critisism towars them and tell people how they feel that a TMC should work by maybe just add or remove a thing or two from them or just put up a new one that they think works much better.

Most people have different opinions considering things like this and while some people like to take lots of cheap, for example fexes, another player maybe wnats to take one or two big powerhouses! This will lead to many differrent ideas and combos and will create a little "library" full of information regarding the new TMC's!

The thread is supposed to help New Tyranid players to get a grip on what is good for what on a TMC, and also other players who simply just don't have a clue about what to give their expensive little toys...

Well I'll try to get the ball rolling with one example that I intend to maybe put into my 1500 pts list that can be found here.

Hivefex; Biomorphs: Encanced Senses, Spine Banks

    Weapon-Symbiotes: Two pairs of Devourers

    Total: 118 pts

This little bugger can get away with having Spine Banks modelled on him if you play against fairly open opponents (friends etc...) and can therefore be used as an Elite choice in games of 1500 pts and more, whilst if you have an Heavy support slot open and 5 points left, give him the added Spine Banks for some additional punch! And best of all with him, he's dead cheap!

So some comments on him needed and some other TMC combos!

Hope that gets the ball rolling!

Isnt that Fex 4 points over the Elite qualifaction? 114 and blow, 115+ is still a heavy sup choice, the 2x tl devs, and enchanced senses weigh in at 113 alone.

I run 2 of these in my 1250 list. there devestating so far.

No, I mean that if you tell your opponent before the game that the fex doesn't have Spine Banks and that they are there just for show, you can get away with it!

So what do you mainly use your fexes for Lendis?

I use a tusked, barbed strangler-wielding, scythed 'fex. He does alright. Most for hormagaunt support however, so, he just goes into combat and picks off one or two guys

I am also considering my other fex to be as yours but with some more upgrades that make him live a little bit longer!

A Carnifex like that should IMO try to reach combat as soon as possible, and since it takes some turns for him to get there he should have a gun...

This Devilfex has been working well for me.

    Weapons: Talons, twin linked devourers
Biomorphs: Spine banks, Enhanced Senses, Adrenal Glands (WS), Toxic Maisma, Scythe Tail, and either Reinforced Chitin or Bonded Exoskeleton

This 'fex is actually an assault creature; it just benefits from my "all carnifexes should have guns" philosophy. It can pump out some very respectable firepower, and is quite dangerous in assault as well; the plan is for the tail to make up for the relatively low number of attacks it gets in protracted fights.

I personally think that this is a rather good fex. And as you said all fexes should have atleast one gun. Otherwise they wont be killing a single thing for about 3-4 turns...

One thing though, isn't it better to try to find some points somewhere in your list and give it a Barbed Strangler instead?

It is ofcourse your fex and if you think that this works better or you don't have those spare points, then fine!

I thought about getting some in the beggining, but if you use those magnets, you wont be able to create those cool converted fexes out there(in my mind) !
    So no magnets for me

I am currently myself still working on what my own two fexes will have... I am considering the Hivefex sa one of the choices... And maybe one tooled up fex with the ST and BS combo...!

The 2x Tl dev/es fexes i use now i march down the feild behind a horde of genestealers, and gun down whatever manages to avoid the stealers pretty much, or whatever eats the stealers in some cases.

bored with guant hordes, runnin just stealers and Tmc's for the moment.

modeling up a VC/BS fex atm to round the force out with higher str range tank killin.

So you are doing an elite force instead of a hord, well thats nice!

And about magnets... I have tootaly changed my opinion on them! I will get some ASAP! But i have found a way to get them without buing from the internet!

You know those little toys called "mag-stix" and stuff like that, well they have really strong magnets that have about the same quality ad the ones you can find online. Here is an image:
    http://img.alibaba.com/photo/5025619...__WISEMAG_.jpg

If you heat up the plastic around the actual magnet you can easily pull it off!
Easy to get and not that expesive, and you don't have to wait weeks to get them!

I am going to buy a little bunch of them for my fexes tomorrow !

The strangler is a scary weapon in the hands of a 'fex, with only a single shot, it's not as reliable, and twin-linking it is too expensive and compromises the fex's ability in assault if he makes it there. The devourers are shorter ranged, but that's rarely a problem, and while they can't erase entire squads of light infantry the way the strangler can, they rarely accomplish nothing at all. Basically, I want him to get stuck in anyways, so the short range isn't a problem, and the way I roll, I need all the rerolls I can get .

Spine banks are easily the best of the back options in my opinion; thornback is good if the thing makes combat, but really shines if the 'fex is fighting alongside another 'nid unit with a good chance of catching the enemy when they run, and Spore Cysts are a really cool idea that I can't think of a use for.

    Re: The Carnifex/Tyrant Combo thread

I have four prefered variants, two for the tyrant, two for the 'fex. In each case, one is taylored for close assault, the other, for long range sniping.

I haven't actually field tested any of them, so I'm not sure of their usefulness yet.

    1) The Praetorian tyrant;

    Adrenal glands (+1ws)
    Extended carapace
    Soxin sacs
    Implant attack
    Toxic miasma
    Scything Tallons
    Bonesword + lashwhip
    Warp blast

    = 177 pts
(at one stage, I was equiping it with TL devourers, until I realised it couldn't shoot both the devourers and the warp blast in the same turn)
Also, I usually equip it with a tyrant guard meat shield, to make up for the lack of an inv save.
I have also considered giving this tyrant the second adrenal gland upgrade for tournament use, pushing up its points cost to 192.

    2) Recluse tyrant
    Vennom cannon
    Toxin sacs
    Scything talons
    Warp field
    Enhanced senses
(nuts! no codex avalible. Can't remember the points cost)

    3) Carnus-rex (ie, the line-breaker super fex)

    Both Adrenal glands
    Enhanced senses
    Spine banks
    TL devourers
    Toxin sacs
    Tusks
    Reinforced chitin
    Extended carapace
    regenerate
    Scything tallons
    =212 pts

    4) Terrorfex
    Enchanced senses
    Reinforced chitin
    Venom cannon
    Scything tallons
    = 151 pts

I'm slowly building up a Nid army and the only use I could think of for spore cysts was to put them on a sniper venom fex.
I'd give him twin-linked venom cannons, enhanced senses and maybe an extra wound and scythe tail.
The guy's main purpose is to suppress tanks with his S10 VC. The tail to give him some defense capabilities as he's most likely to get charged and thus more likely to get in contact with 4 models during a combat. The Spore cyst is there to create a sort of minefield around him to discourage deep striking units and assault units with fists getting close to him without taking damage.
The idea is to have him walk up to a position with good LoS and suppress tanks.
    He's a bit expensive though so I don't think I'll include one.

What I want to run is an elite fex with 2 sets of twin devourers. I haven't decided wether to add spine banks on him to make him a truly scary infantry and light vehicle killer but lose out on his Elite status which I thought could be really usefull in regards to deploying much later than normal.

A nasty heavy support fex with strangler, either Scything talons or Crushing claws (not sure yet as I've heard different arguments on wether the claws are worth their points or not), all the defensive upgrades (+1 W and T, 2+ save and regenerate) and thornback. He's the line breaker, move up the board along with everything else, occasionaly dropping a pie plate on infantry or light open topped vehicles, while absorbing a ******** of firepower and make a mess of anything in CC if it makes it.
My concept list als has another elite fex in screamer killer configuration with two scything talons, bio plasma and spine banks. This one is mostly because I think he'd look awesome and is a nice relatively cheap diversion which can make a mess of tanks and infantry if it is ignored too much but there's much criticism on that configuration.

    Re: The Carnifex/Tyrant Combo thread

I got 2 fexes in my 1500 point army.

Carni 1- -Carnifex 85p, w/ Regenerate 30p, Extended Carapace 25p (gives 2+ save), Reinforced Chitin (Gives 5 wounds) 15p, Crushing Claws 25p (Roll D6 + 2 attacks, 3 if charging), Scything Talons 8p +1 attack, Tusks +1 attack 10p, Adrenal Glands 4p +1 WS, Acid Maw (Reroll any miss in first round of CC) 6p, Bonded Exoskeleton (1+ toughness) 20p, Spine Banks 5p (Spinefists in shooting faze, frag grenades in CC), Flesh Hooks 1p.

    Carnifex – WS=4, BS=2, S=9, T=7,W=5, I=1, A=D6+2(+1 charge), LD=10, Sv=2+.
    (Regenerate)

Carni 2- -Carnifex 85p, w/ Regenerate 30p, Extended Carapace 25p (gives 2+ save), Reinforced Chitin (Gives 5 wounds) 15p, Barbed Strangler 20p, Enhanced Sensus 1BS 8p, Scything Talons 8p +1 attack, Tusks +1 attack 10p, Acid Maw (Reroll any miss in first round of CC) 6p, Bonded Exoskeleton (1+ toughness) 20p.

    Carnifex – WS=3, BS=3, S=9, T=7,W=5, I=1, A=4 (+1 charge), LD=10, Sv=2+.
    (Regenerate)

My army was originally going to be 1000 points but i couldn't make a carni that i wanted with just 1, so i made the army 1500 and have to rediculous ones. The first one os more for CC and the second is clearly more for Protection and shooting.

    Re: The Carnifex/Tyrant Combo thread

errr.... doesnt acid maw give re-rolls to wound in the first round of combat. Thats what it says in my codex. As such i personally think it is a huge waste of points, as a carni is S9 base and will probably wound on a 2+ anyway.

    Anyway heres mine

    Hive Tyrant:

    Bio-weapons: 2x scytals, warp blast
Bio-morphs: Adrenal glands (WS), toxin sacs, extended carapace, implant attack.

    164 points

Is ALWAYS accompanied by at least 2 guard.

    Carnifex 1:

    Bio-weapons: scytals, venom cannon
Bio-morphs: adrenal Glands (WS), enhanced senses, reinforced chitin, extended carapace.

    186 points

    Carnifex 2:

same as above except with a barbed strangler

    171 points

    Re: The Carnifex/Tyrant Combo thread

    my hive tyrant usually has
both adrenal glands, bs upgrade, warp field, toxin sacs, toxic misima, implant attack, bonesword+lash whip and barbed strangler

this way he can either lump ord blasts on squads forcing them to spread out, and when he makes combat while not doing much damage it is a good character killer and good for keeping the carnie attacking after it has been killed.

tyrant guard usually help it stay alive and if needed do the damage (2 with scy talons/ rc and 1 with lash whips for aiming straight at asp champs ect.

    the carnifex
is armed with a very large amount of upgrades
both adrenal glands, bs upgrade, toxic misima, spine banks, mace tail, extended carapace, vc, sky talons and depending on how im feeling tusked, the t7 and/or extra wound upgrade. ive never got rengen to work(not one 6 on 20+ rolls).

this canifex is my tank hunter and hive tyrant support.

it has 2 str 10 shots which hit on 4's, plus spine banks for light tanks and infantry. its not an overall monster in hth, but can hold its own against almost anything cept( greater deamon, lord with force weapon, and heavy hth units( khornate squads, ect)
I put the laughter in slaughter
