    Stompa Tribe- Scratchbuilt

    Greetings,

Many of you may remember me from such threads as http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...t=scratchbuilt, and http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...arns+to+sculpt. As you can tell, I like to work cheap.

That brings me to today's post. Recently, GW has released the Speed Freaks army list online (Here: http://us.games-workshop.com/games/4...ed/default.htm) since they will no longer be publishing Codex: Armageddon. I saw this as a wonderful opportunity to create a new and unique army on the cheap.

Using this codex, I have decided to build a Stompa tribe. For those who are not into all things Orky, a Stompa tribe is composed of walkers such as Gargants, Kanz, Dreads, etc. Basically, things on feet that kill stuff.

I'm using the Kult of Speed list for a few reasons:
    1. War Buggies/Traks as troops is the easiest way to translate Kanz/Dreadz into troops choices.
    2. Battlewagons and Looted Vehicles make great Gargants. With this list I can get 3.
    3. Limited foot troops. All of them can be placed inside the Battlewagons

With that in mind, let's start with some pics:

First off, these are designed to act as Warbuggies/Traks in this army. These were some Killa Kanz I scratchbuilt a while ago. As you can tell, they are way out of scale for Kanz. However, they are about the proper size for a buggy "counts as". Since they are all ready primed black much of the detail work is lost in the photo. When I knock up some new ones, I'll post better WIP shots. These were made completely out of card and found materials. Total cost... free.

This is the "core" of my Battlewagon/Gargant. Essentially, I'm using a structure carved out of foam. Then, I pinned and glued thin card/cereal packet to the foam body. The pins sink right in and create an easy riveted look. I recommend using a thimble at this stage to save your thumb.

The feet are plastic liners for baby shoes, used to help them keep the proper form before purchase. Also, a found item. In the background is my helper Gretchin.

The engine on the back is an interesting piece of packing I found. Total cost so far... free.

I plan on building a total of 1 Gargant and 7 kanz for a 1,000pt version of this army. I will also need 1 Big Mek and 4 Burna Boyz, a Mek, 6 Grot Oilers, and 5 boyz with Slugga and Choppas. I all ready have the Burna Boyz, Mek, and 2 Oilers. When all is said and done, I would like to spend less than $30 on this army.

Will it win games? Who cares.

Looking cool so far, but why don't you try using the Tyranid Godzilla list? The person who did the Deffwing is doing them, and it seems a bit more practical IMHO.

    Re: Stompa Tribe- Scratchbuilt

Good question Rabid Bunny 666. The reason i did not choose to use the Tyranid Godzilla list is as follows:

    1. Gargants are vehicles so I wanted them to have AV stats instead of T and W stats. It seems more appropriate to me.

    2. I want to use Ork rules, I'm not fond of the Tyranids.

    3. Someone else is all ready doing a Tyranid/Ork Stompa Tribe project.

    4. I have all the Ork rules all ready and don't want to buy the Tyranid codex.

As a side note, someone pointed out to me that you could potentially get 5 Battlewagons and 1 looted vehicle in a Speed Freak army. That would equal alot of Gargants.

    Fair enough, more Gargants=more DAKKA!

    Re: Stompa Tribe- Scratchbuilt

I have decided to work on putting together the smaller stompaz (I'm really not sure what to call them as their not dreads or kans) before I finish the gargant. Here's what the process looks like:

First step is to find a suitably sized tube. I took a toilet paper tube and cut it roughly in half.

The next step is to build the roof for the stompaz. The simplest way to do this is to glue them to whatever you want to be the roof, wait for it to dry and then trim the roof to fit .

For the shingled roof, I made a paper cone and glued it to the top. I then cut out individual shingles. Next, I glued them on starting at the bottom, completing a circle of shingles, and then adding the next line of shingles above it. This was a longer process then the other tops I made.

Next, I moved on to the legs. This is a simple process of layering three layers of thick card together. Then, I stuck cardstock to the sides and tops that exposed the interior of the cardboard. Once the cardstock dried, I trimmed it to fit.

    Continued due to image limit...

I did the same with the stompaz feet, but with one layer of thick card only. I then added gubbinz using sprue rubble, cardstock, card, and glue.

After the legs were built, I moved onto the close combat arm. I essentially used the same method on the claw as I did to build the legs. The major difference, is to hinge the elbow to the arm. This can be done by cutting the top two layers of card on one arm segments to overlap one layer of card for the other segment. This creates a join where one arm segment is a slot, and the other segment is a tab. Then, detail as needed.

While I was working on the arm, the legs dried. I then simply attached them to the body with glue.

Once that was done and the arm was dry, I did the same with the arm. Since the arm is bigger, I pinned it using 3 push pins from the inside of the body of the stompa leading into the upper arm segment. This gives the arm greater strength.

    Re: Stompa Tribe- Scratchbuilt

    Thanks.

I have done some more work on Stompa 2. I built his close combat arm.

Detail of the front of it:

Detail of the back of it:

I also started working on the third stompa. Per some suggestions, I tried plating the body with bulked up armor before doing any other attachments. This is a side view of the main body with the legs, and feet in the foreground. The straws will be painted as exhaust pipes haphazardly sticking from the rear of the machine.

So far the total cost is still $0. However, I'm not sure exactly how I am going to make twin linked big shoota arms for all of these guys. I am open to suggestions.

Looks cool, if Imageshack stops messing around

Any chance of a scale shot?

edit: Imageshack stopped playing up, and i have to say that they are looking cool, especially the first one.

    Re: Stompa Tribe- Scratchbuilt

Sorry it took so long, but here is the scale shot you asked for.

I have found that I have about 2 hours or less a week to work on any/or all of my hobby projects. The last couple of weeks even this precious time was taken from me. However, I have returned.

Here is some shots of the third mini-stompa/dread buggy:

    And the rear

To complete a dread buggy up to this point takes about 2 hours. I plan to complete one more up to this point and then tackle the twin linked big shootas for three of them, and 1 Skorcha. I have a plan to make one of the twin linked big shootas involving a drinking straw, cardstock, a bottle cap and a stir straw. We'll see what happens.

Hopefully, I will also find some time to build a light box for better photos.

    Re: Stompa Tribe- Scratchbuilt

    Thanks ScarletSquig,

To be honest, on that last Dread-Buggies drill arm I used a special wall mount that comes in sets of two at the hardware store for .64 (U.S.) or some such. I happened to have one on hand, but some people may have to buy it. Technically, this would put the project cost at .64 cents (U.S.).

I also did some work on the last Dread-Buggy. Some legs and armor plating.

    Enjoy.

ehhh... i wouldn't play against you. i like space orks to be solid and full of killing implements. you dont have any bits at all on these? nothing? whats with the funny faces? while i appreciate the idea and the desire to save moolah, these are poorly executed.
i can see by the unpainted models shown for size reference that you prefer to game rather than paint and model things, which is ok. my beef with these is that they dont look cool or good or anything.
