AD does a LR Crusader - or he goes hungry (no really)

    DAY 1 - 07:00

    Evening

Like many people my age, I stupidly chose the root of University, and the temptation of a fat loan in the bank was too tempting, like some wicked temptress. At the same time I was introduced to subway... of which theres three in Preston. And then I got a lady. And then I wrote a 30 minute film. Suffice to say I'm broke...

So imagine my sheer joy when a member on this forum saw my ad in my sig and came with an offer that I eggerly (read hungrily) took up.

A land raider crusader in the Guardians of the Covenant color scheme from the new Dark Angels codex. If I finish it by the end of this month I get a bonus, fail, and I get laughed out of the project logs like some poor monkey without a hat.

So, here we have the obligatory damn right required shot of the work space (newly revamped, and designed for increased productivity! The grey box is full of bretonnian comissions. Please ignore the stack of music - the computer has a habit of dying and then forgetting my music...)

Oh and incase I forget to work or need instructions....

And heres my first dabblings with the kit. In all honesty I was stunned by the size of the ******* thing. It has physical pressence. The engine for example is not only stupidly detailed but will easily require the same amount as for a pair of marines, as will the power plant on the back - and we havent even begun to discuss the hull!

So guys and gals, I want encouragement, comments, mars bars. Especially mars bars.

First up is the interior - I'm going for cream for two reasons. Using metalics would be too dark and too samey (the tanks metalic already), and a cream interior lets me show off all the funky detail inside.

The only question now is whether to go to film philosophy and sit through some horrid nightmarish John-Luc Goddard film, or stay here, play toy soldiers and get a few hours sleep...

Combine the 2, watch a film, but make it Aliens. Lots of APC interior shots for ideas

Sadly not possible - the cursed film tutor likes crazy french films or i'd be there in a shot.

Right the interior sections are all filed, seperated, and now off to be sprayed.

    mental image. sort it out.

good stuff AD, i'm interested to see how you do this, i assembled my first (and only for a good while i think - flashbacks ) LR in January and it is a size.
are you going to weather the engine block? i think it looks really cool.

keep the top plate off, the one that has the rear cupola on, it makes it easier to paint the lights, and it doesn't need to go on until later anyway, but make sure you bend it if you need to before painting to make sure it sticks down evenly all over.

    good luck

I'd re-edit that but then I'd have nothing to smile about

Being the egger monkey that I am I have already glued all the lights and the machine spirit in place. Gah! Oh well, just makes them more of a challenge.

I have some MIG pigment here (only the one mind, there bloody expensive) so I'll give it a bash. I'm planning to do both the interior engine and the exterior exhausts though - I'm of the opinion that theres probably dozens of cleaning servitors stopping rust and explosives being left in the land raider, and that only the tech priests touch the worky bits. I'm hoping to do it in the normal GW style so if it all goes wrong then I can correct it without too much worry.

My current plan is to build from the inside outwards as I'm doing the interior, and then work on the individual bits - the assault cannons, the turret gunner, the hurricane bolters.

Depending on how things go tomorrow I might start painting the power plant - theres no way I'm going to be able to do it tonight (gotta sleep sometime)

i only own one mig pig too, industrial city dirt

for the heat weatheering on the engine i bput a light drybrush quite wide around the vents of scorched brown, then smaller around but heavier of scorched brown/black then black smallest, then a small edge of boltgun metal. looks pretty good IMO.

Is the interior going to be stock, or are you going to add some extra gubbins?
Is the only directive from the client the colour scheme?

Re: AD does a LR Crusader - or he goes hungry (no really)

Sounds good SC I'll give it a bash. I have the russian earth which is fairly dark grey but has some brown in there so overall a pretty nice color for weathering with, especially on something like this.

I'm keeping it stock at the moment, but I have a big pile of marine bits and the client is looking at this thread so hopefully if theres anything then he'll let me know before I've started but I dont think hes as concerned about the interior as I am - theres some big flat panels behind the sponsons - any suggestions as to what I should put on them? I was thinking maybe using transfer numbers - like instructions on what to do when in a LRC (wont be legible of course as theres simply not the room).

And my white spray is rattling.

    Bugger

EDIT: BLOODY THING! Nearly ruined the whole project. Sprayed out small nodules of white paint all over the interior, meaning there was a cat in hells chance of doing a decent job. Quite dip in dettol and a scrub soon sorted it though. Cant believe this. Its not even like I've got the other bits preped for spraying black so I can at least get on with those tonight.

    GAH!

Very neat project here... but I think it requires more pictures...

    MORE PICTURES!

On a personal note... in the next month I have to scratch build 3 MKI LR's and build 1 Crusader and find 2 more to borrow... should be fun to get some motivation from this project log!

Try a many years old can of Boltgun Metal spray, a clogged nozzle and lack of proplellant meant the remainder of the can dribbled down the can, down may hand, onto my shirt and onto my carpet.

Re: AD does a LR Crusader - or he goes hungry (no really)

Thanks everyone for the support guys - its helping a lot although not as much as my missus whose literally gotten her mate to drive for around about an hour and a half to come see me for five minutes. For a minute I thought the spray paint was getting to me, but she was real!

Anyways, I'm going to catch some sleep while I can. Its been an extremely long day and I could do with just forgetting about it all for awhile.

I'm currently pondering getting up sometime early morning (5am ish) so I can catch the new south park and get some work done on this before my meetings. Better to work after a sleep then before one.

    Once again, thanks for all the support - and just because I wanted to give a bit of eye candy each update (hey, its what I look for), heres a recent Lahmian I did for my regular guy in jeresy;
