    The recipe thread

As the title says, this is a rather random thing to be posting even in this forum. Then again, it's too serious to go in the Wastes.

EDIT: This thread is now to be used for recipes in general. I'd be grateful if a mod could change the thread title suitably.

The recipe for Grantham Gingerbread biscuits (makes 30)
    100g/4oz Butter
    350g/12oz Caster sugar
    1 Egg, beaten
    250g/9oz Self-raising flour
    5ml/1 teaspoon ground ginger

    1. Whisk butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy
    2. Gradually beat in the egg
    3. Sift in flour and ginger and work with a fork until a fairly firm dough is obtained
    4. Roll the dough into walnut-size balls and place them on buttered baking sheets, well spaced
    5. Bake at 150oC/300oF/gas mark 2 for 45 minutes until very lightly browned and hollow
    6. Enjoy!

Very random but I had to share - these are delicious!

Thanks - try adding cinnamon or ketamine.

So long as we're talking recipies, why not throw some of our own in the mix (no pun intended).

I've always been a fan of preparing my tunafish with the usual mayo/salt/pepper. However, adding just a bit of horseradish and hot sauce can really zing it up.

Oh, can't forget one of my favorite drinks. Take whatever glass you'll be drinking from and fill it 2/5 with Coke. Then take Sunny Delight and fill the other 3/5. Oh boy... this is fantastic.

this is a good idea, but damn you, you thought of it first.

ok, if for whatever reason you dont want to use refined brown sugar, or whatever for flapjack, or you just want a different flavour, swap the brown sugar and golden syrip in the mix, 3/4 cup od maple syrip, and a tbs of honey.

it really sticks to the ribs, so you eat less of it.

want some spaggheti (sp) but dont have any pasta? just use noodles! its a slightly differet taste, and they cook faster if your in a hurry!.

    tasty cinnimon cake.

whip up the viccie sponge mix, but then chuck in a little extra sugar, and get a jar of schwartz(sp) cinnimon, and add between 1/4 to 3/4 of the jar, to taste, as well as some mixed spice.

it wont rise well, but thats the good part, if you do, say, 3 layers, theyre about this thick per layer:

    ______

    ______

then the special bit that i do, whip up some spooge icing (glace, but so very thick. use a fair bit of sugar, and add water by the tbs) and spread over when still warm. it will absorb the icing, and give a moist, sweetend cake.

it goes great with hot chocolate, and coffe, and is great to make.

also, if you make ginger nuts (teehee ginger nuts!) and they dont turn out right, and are a little too soft, a bit more like a cake, put them into a plastic bag, and squash them into a large-ish ball. you can then rolll this out, and chill it, ad it will be perfectly good, if a little odd looking.

yknow... we ought to have a stickied recepies thread....

Re: Slightly random even for Random Musings... Recipe

Beeing a student I found out that peeling potatoes, and then boiling them takes way to much of my precious time.

Combine this with the fact that woks are the greatest thing ever, and I found myself eating mostly something with rice

Take the amount of rice you want. Ad water till about a cm above the surface of the rice. Boil on a hot flame till, when going through the pan with a spatula, when you reveal the bottom, there is no more water flowing onto the space opened in the "wake"of the spatula.
When this is the case, turn of flame, and leave in the pan till the rest of the food is finished. This gives you great, non-burnt rice.

For variation, ad a tbs of curry powder, before cooking. This makes yellow rice, which tastes better. Also, it is muchos cheaper than yellow rice bought from a package. (this is coloured with saffron, muchos more expensive)

Also great for dinners to impress the lady's, as coloured rice is appreciated more than white. (makes it look like it took much of effort)

Well, since it seems to be going that way, I changed the thread title to 'the recipe thread'.

    Top drink based action ahoy!

    You will need:

    1. A large saucepan
2 Some of those fruit teabags/normal teabags
    3 1 glass cup thing
    4 Bag of sugar
    5 Bottle of lemon juice
6 Your flask of WEAK LEMON DRINK (and if anyone doesn't get that reference they should be shot)

Get the kettle on, and boil up some water. Taking your glass - one that is about the height of your hand is a good size - and fill it 3/4 full of sugar. Apply sugar to saucepan, then add two fruit teabag things. Add 8 glasses worth of boiling water, then fill your glass 1/3 full of lemon juice, which should also go straight into the saucepan. Now stir your mixture, then leave to stand overnight. Remove fruit teabag things, and stick the saucepan in the fridge. When all is cold, you have some top drink.

Alternatively, you can use two normal teabags, and you'll have iced lemon tea.

Re: Slightly random even for Random Musings... Recipe

Simon Quinlank - KING OF HOBBIES (played by Kevin Eldon) regularly appeared on programmes such as Fist of Fun, This Morning with Richard Not Judy and The Sunday Show.

Every week he would present us with a new hobby, including a list of what you would need. This list would always include weak lemon drink.

    An example (from memory):

    Old Man Collecting

"Today's hobby is Old Man Collecting, and I am Simon Quinlank - KING OF HOBBIES!

For this hobby you will need:

    A gramophone player
A collection of Vera Lynn records
    A fishing rod
A flask of Weak Lemon Drink
Some Bourbon bisquits (which was pronounced 'Bees-quits')

First, tie the gramophone to your fishing rod and proceed to play your Vera Lynn records"

*Simon is seen trailing a line of pensioners behind him in the style of the pied piper*

*Scene cuts, and we see Simon entering a room stacked high with old people*

"This can be tiring, so you may now drink your Weak Lemon Drink."

(To nearest pensioner) "Old man! Would you like a Bourbon Bees-quit? ANSWER ME NOW!"

*Cuts to Simon, negotiating trades with a fellow collector*

"Alan is a fool, for the old man I have traded to him is clearly inferior to the one he has given me. But this is because I AM Simon Quinlank - KING OF HOBBIES!"

    So now you know.

    *shoots Yorkiebar and Lostanddamned*

    It's a 90's thing. I don't know if today's young 'uns will remember it.

My personal favourite was asking people for change for a pound.

Simon: "Excuse me sir, do you have change for a pound?"

Guy: "Erm ... i think so ... *guy spends ages rooting through his pockets* Here you go"

Simon: "Ha, i don't want it!" *runs away*

You may drink your weak lemon drink .... NOW!

Ok, so this isn't just spam, check teh recipe!11!1!!!

    Cheap substitute for fried rice:

    Cook some rice.
Cook some meat in a wok (your choice of meat, & you can add chopped onions if you want).
    Throw rice in with meat.
Add some peas, and a chili if you want.
Add a few tsps of curry powder, and a bit of ketchup (or if you're going for the pseudo satay-style, mix some peanut butter with soy sauce and add.)
Add plenty of soy sauce and mix.

Beat an egg and fry it separatly, chop up and add.

Enjoy. Not quite as nice as a real one, but it's quick and cheap!
