    Scratch Built MKI Land Raiders

    EDIT: PAINTED PICTURES NOW AVAILABLE!!

    Hello All,

I have made mention of these LR's in other threads around WarSeer, but here they are in all their "glory".

I have a few WIP shots, but not from the beginning. I will try to explain what I did as I got through the pictures. I am not putting this into a log, as once I have them painted, that is it, so really there will only be one more update beyond the first ones.

    The Story:

I found these templates many years ago in the internet, and well, I can't find them any more... so I guess GW talked to the individual who owned the website.

    I used:
Box Board (much like cereal boxes, but a bit thicker without any printing on it, got free from my local gaming store)
Foam Core (received free after my previous employer had a conference in town and it was all going to be thrown out)
    White Glue
Pins (Bought from store for $2.50CDN)
Glue Stick (Bought from store for $2.50 for two)
GW Bitz (Traded most with spikyjames [two sets of LR Lascannons, and heavy bolters], 1 set LR Lascannons and heavy bolters from my Crusader, rest from random stuff from bitz box)
GW Rounded Sprue (used as the lumps on the tracks)

So, in the end I think they cost me a total of $10CDN plus lots and lots of time. Here are some WIP shots:

This shows the progression of building up the sides. I cut out each template from normal white paper. These were then glued on with the glue stick to the box board/foam core, and cut out again. Lots of glue and weight were needed to have everything sit flat.

The most annoying part of the whole thing. To make sure that each of the folds were straight, I scored the surface of the box board to make sure the folds were done right.

Now 3D, one with tracks attached.

    Group shot with no details.

Cutting up sprue to add to the tracks. This was very time consuming. I cut up the sprue to try and save as much as possible. In the end I went through 4 separate sprues as I needed 74 pieces of sprue 2.3cm long for each LR. I then talked my wife (a great lady) to drill two holes into each piece. I then attached these on with white glue and two pins in each one.

    The result.

The Lascannons. I glued them together, then cut the bottom of one off with a jeweller's saw, cleaned it up, and then glued to the top of another one. Since there was a seam, and I didn't want to green stuff anything, I found some Fanatasy sheilds and BT bitz. Presto, MKI lascannons!

A little fuzzy, but more to come

    Close up.

Then I realized that I had forgotten to add stormbolters:

Next step is to paint them up. But, that will happen at a later time, but once they are, pics will be posted.

Cool, still got a template of the Land Raider somewhere.

These look really cool, can't wait to see the weapons mounting.

The circles on the sides show where they are to be mounted. I will be attempting to put them in the middle of the circle.

I was thinking the same thing... but these are much better than the Ork Trukk! For one squad of termies, I have a bunch of Space Hulk termies!!! They should be able to fit... if they sit on each other's laps...

i think they look a bit higher then the usual land raider but i must say that it looks really good. Do you think you could use plasticard insted of the carboard?

Yes, for sure. I just had the cardboard sitting around, and is much easier to work with. The doors on two of the LR's is plastic card, with the BT symbols glued on. This is because I forgot to make doors when everything was flat. It would have been difficult to get a good, flat, door fit with the cardboard after they were 3D.

Spacker in another thread of mine provided me/us with these:

So a big thank you to Spacker for this!

From looking at mine, I think I may be about 1cm too small all around, but I hope that this won't matter with respects to gaming. I know they are wide enough since I measured them off my, yet to be built, crusader.

Great idea. 5/5 in my book.

I realize for purists that they do not look exactly like the originals (we are talking about the original Land Raider chassis not the current version), but they are a cost effective way to build up and army of them...besides now you need the troops to ride in them.

    Thank you!

Yes, you are correct. If I was only making one, then I would have spend a significant more time on it, but since I was doing 3, I feel this gets the "feel" correct.

Yes, right now, the one with the rhino doors, is going to drive around my Space Hulk termies. But the other two, either I have to find more Space Hulk termies, or think about making some old school troops...

Re: Scratch Built MKI Land Raiders

    Hello, and welcome back!

    I have now finished them...

    All three...

The one with the most detail...

    The other side of it...

Enjoy! Not some of my best painting, but I was going for decent table top, which unfortunately for up here, will be the best painted at the tournament. Now off for the rest of the army.

EDIT: Here is the link for the size comparison (posted in the 40 K Rules section)

Yes I thought that too, but the odds of me playing with them too much are slim, so I honestly thought "Make them look good at first glance". There is no motor area, no pipes, or even wheels... Those small things would have made them 'pop' a whole lot more, but would have cost a whole bunch more hours that I wasn't willing/wanting to put into them. (Wow, that sounds bad...)

I was also building 3 of them at once, if I was only doing one, then I would have spend a whole lot more time going to details.
