Thread: Why did you start Warmachine/Hordes?

    Why did you start Warmachine/Hordes?

Well the title says it already, so why did you start Warmachine or Hordes or both maybe?

For me everything starter actually with Confrontation. Well everything started actually with me not having so much time anymore. So I was looking to downscale. At first I started playing Warhammer Skirmish games and made some house rules for 40K skirmish games. But I played less and less games. By accidant I discovered Confrontation and started collecting the Wolfen (just for painting reasons, as I'm also a Werewolf fan) for they where kinda unique. Shortly after that I got pissed by GW politics (I really don't want to go any further in there, as I really don't intend this to become a flamewar) and decided not only to collect Rackham Miniatures, but to play them too and switch to Confrontation. My Girlfriend (big dwarf player) didn't like the Rackham Dwarves and she also had some trouble to decide which Confro Army to take. I saw though, that she really liked the Wolven, so I gave her the Wolven and started collecting the Orcs myself.
Since then we are enjoying Confrontation a lot and play it quite often now.

Well, surfing the web (and warseer of course ) I heard more and more about this Warmachine, but really never looked into it. Once in an indie store in Germany, I saw Warmachine minies and though, hmm not really in the mood for a Sci-Fi game (I still prefer Fantasy even though I played 40K too). Yeah, shame on me, I really thought that Warmachine was something like 40K.

Finally at some stage after seeing that there is a seperate PP Forum I decided to investigate this a bit further. And then I saw it. It's Fantasy after all and it has Steam Machines in it. I absolutly love Steam Tech in Fantasy games, as it gives you so many opportunities for building scenery and making scenarios (big D'OH on me not noticing this before). And not only this, when I moved to Dublin from Germany, I was really annoyed that there was no shop to buy Rackham Miniatures from. And while surfing the PP site, I saw they named a shop in Dublin selling Warmachine and Hordes.
I went to that shop and bought me both books (Warmachine and Hordes) and to my joy, they sell Rackham minis too.
Reading to see if I would like the background I must say I really like it alot and I simply love the Trollbloods. I play Warmachine too of course (steam powered Warjacks, yaj ).

My GF is not much a fan of Steam Tech. Still she likes a few miniatures, but not any Faction in Warmachine or Hordes to collect them. Doesn't matter, because I like to collect several Factions usually. I already bought several starting boxes for Hordes and Warmachine and started to play Warmachine and Hordes with my GF and we both like it very much. Now my GF plans to buy a few minis on her own and wants to paint a few too (she's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better then me, actually she's really good at painting).

So what was it in the end that brought me to Warmachine&Hordes. The Scenario for sure (and the Trollbloods), but also the minis, while not all of them look great, they have this great poses like Rackham Minis and are not that stiff like so many GW minis are.

Re: Why did you start Warmachine/Hordes?

Well, the primary reason for me? Mike McVey. I'm a fanboy, I always have been and I always will be.

I missed working with metal, I fell in love with the aesthetics of the miniatures, and I enjoy the comic-book like nature of the fluid universe they've created. Steampunk, for me, has always been my preferred setting for Science Fiction/Fantasy, it can make old things new and new things old!

Also, although I love the GW universes, have you ever gotten tired of seeing so many skulls? I mean, they're everywhere! I joke, I joke.

I can sum it all up in one word.

As I sit here, looking at my Death Guard, my former Iron Warriors and my World Eaters, stripping two down to merge into a sinister scheme repaint....

    I saw a Helljack.

    Helljacks.

That converted me. Sinister. Dark. Curved. Pretty.

Re: Why did you start Warmachine/Hordes?

I started out just buying some of the figures for use in other rpgs, then came across the character guide for the rpg. That started on me getting to know more about the world.

Eventually someone demoed Warmachine at my local games night and I really enjoyed Khador. After this point I started getting Khador and the slow slippery slope got me. Between my wife and I, we now have most armies and way more painted for this than any other game.

Donkeyman - which shop in Dublin? Some of my good friends play WM in Dublin and my mate owns 3rd Place so I get over there sometimes.

The 4th Dimension (in the Temple Bar). Its quite a small one and they don't have that much in store, but you can order whatever you want and they are very friendly. The best store in Dublin for sure.

Just a sec, isn't the 3rd Place the comic store above?

Re: Why did you start Warmachine/Hordes?

Having heard about Warmachine from these forums I had a look around and saw a steam powered "dreadnaught" with a belt fed machine gun (Sentinal), and since I love dreadnaughts at was love at first sight. Six months later I found a local supplier and went in to either buy a Cygnar or Khador starter box.
I now collect Cygnar (which is probably good because every man and his dog has Khador) but I still dont have the jack that inspired me to start . . .

And since Cyngar has the sexiest jack, the Centurion I dont know why people even look at the other factions

Will do, the pirate list is really just for friendly games - the goreshade list I'll be drawing up will be the more 'competitive' of the two

*cackles* good good, I like your attitude already. I love eSkarre hordes for friendlies, but The Bastard is always my main man when I want to slaughter.

There is a Warmachine Tourney scene around there. If you want I can try and find out details as two of my friends certainly play in it.

Thanks for the offer, but at the moment I'm so busy on my job, that I often have time just to paint for half an hour and half an hour there. And the times when I play I often don't finish my games (the reason, why I only play WM and Hordes with my GF at the moment).
I think it would be quite odd to introduce yourself to a Tourney scene and then never show up or even worse, leave in the middle of a game.

Re: Why did you start Warmachine/Hordes?

I started because I fancied a change. It looks like a nice smooth set of rules and I like the "steampunk" vibe that warmachine has.

There are a few people around here who play but I could do with finding a decent sized club so I can get a few more games in more regularly.
