Re: GrahamGilchrist's Tau Army test models and transforming stealth suit (death to 56

Was it only me who, when I read the title, immediately imagined a stealth suit transforming into Optimus Prime.
    Man that would be cool!
Anyway, on a more serious note, the stealth suits are v. cool but i would add a bit more electric arcs etc. around the transforming area to make it a bit more obvious whats happening but otherwise I think they're damn cool!
The rest of the models are very well painted as well, I like the clean painting style, and I kinda like the back-to-front drones.
You could have a stealth suit being shot and the armour malfunctioning in that area (the rest of the suit being in camoflage).

    Cheers, Haggis

Re: GrahamGilchrist's Tau Army test models and transforming stealth suit (death to 56

Very nice. I've just bought some Tau so I'm paying close attention to Tau stuff here. I tried a similar colour scheme on some test tau but I didn't pull it off like you, I'll probably go for something brighter. I always thought that fire warriors should look more, you know, fiery.

Stealth suits might look odd if some are fully camo'd and some not. I suggest putting at least a bit of camo on all of them, working up from the base in each case. As others have said, having different amounts of transformation on each one should make it clear to the eye what is going on. Maybe put one suit with his foot on something (a rock, treestump, skull or something) and have that part of the model blending into different colour than the rest of the suit(s) in contact with the ground.

    Good work, anyway.

Fantastic work, especially on the stealth. Very nice scheme, the white weapons are an added tasty bit. Makes me want to go paint my 750 point Tau army

Very nice, love the stealth suit. Colour scheme on the models is great. Not in your face yet still bold.

the painting is awesome. the photography is superb. it is quite an art (one i have yet to master)

    ideas:

think all the drone colour schemes are cool. could do the drones in different patterns depending on their function. one pattern for sheild drones and another for gun drones, another for sniper, or markerlight.

    stealth suits:

can go mechanical and have the stealth field generated from the base up in a level line on the model.

or having thought it over again. i now like the idea of the stealth cammo creeping over the suit organically, from the contact points with the surrounding terrain. then it would look like the suit is sampling its surrounding then adapting the cammo accordingly.

so in most cases thats cammo rising from the feet up as it is turned on (or descending from the head as it is turned off). then you could pose one with his hand on the ground (or on a rock/tree) with the cammo flowing from that too.

if you do paint one with patches of cammo it will look like the stealth field is malfunctioning, could be very cool or could detract from the super high tech feel of the army.

Seriously, excellent models there. Keep up the good work. I'd love to see a whole army painted in that colour scheme and standard.

Those models are sweet, the stealthsuits are great although some slight colour variation in the rocks on the base might show off the ol dry brushing skills from model to model.

Also those bases are well cool, you dont see a lot of non standard non flat bases out there anymore.

The stealth suit is inspired. I actually think you've managed the effect better than your inspiration source, when painting the camo'ed parts of the suit exactly like you'd paint rock or whatever. The rough texture really makes it blend in.

If you finish that army you will beat so many people! They will all be too busy saying "wow!" to concentrate on their game.

Re: GrahamGilchrist's Tau Army test models and transforming stealth suit (death to 56

Thanks for the comments guys. The whole stealth team will definitely be painted in the same way. I liked the idea of doing a crouching guy. Will require major conversion to the stealth suit model but I love the idea of a kneeling guy touching the ground with one hand and the stealth effect also crawling up his arm.

I may also do one with one foot on a patch of grass so that leg is greener.

Re: GrahamGilchrist's Tau Army test models and transforming stealth suit (death to 56

Absolutely fantastic work – I can only add my voice to the choirs of joy! I'm absolutely blown away by the Stealth Suit: the crackle-interface section is gorgeous, and it's immediately obvious what the effect is supposed to be.

Since that guy's the shas-ui (I presume), I think I'd be tempted to do the rest of the unit completely stealthed. As a unit, I think doing them all in different stages of transformation will look a bit messy as a whole. Much better (to my eye) if the leader stands out, while the others look like a military unit. Interest could be added by painting the eye lenses in as normal, and perhaps some malfunctioning/slightly battle-damaged plates that are not camouflaged (with the interface effect around them).

The overall colour scheme is absolutely gorgeous: unusual and subtly oriental-looking, and beautifully executed. Really can't congratulate you enough on these. If the rest of the army is even half as good, they'll be absolutely brilliant.

A couple of random notes: I really like the copper metallics on the fire caste warrior as they complement the green accents (and overall warm colour scheme) much better than silver.
That said, the silver works well with the more neutral black suits. I especially like the subtle weathering on the Crisis suit, and I think the base really sets off the whole thing.
I think the drones look fine – and provide ample teasing opportunity about backwards xenos! I prefer the black centre with orange outer over the other design.

All in all, a spiffy 70s-themed tau army!

Awesome stuff Grahamgilchrist. I like the black/red colour scheme for your Tau. I love the paint job on the stealth suit. I like the pose as well on the crisis suit.

That stealth suit is ******* awesome...IMHO better than the GW link that you posted (I think its your choice of colours and your more subtle electric line)
