The Lion and The Wolf - Bodhitree and AD's Project Log

    Introduction

    Evening all

Awhile back, during the tale of heresy gamers, me and Bodhitree got chatting about the project and we ducked out for various reasons. We did however like the principle and the ideas behind it, and as it turned out one of the reasons we were willing to get involved in the project is because the other was. And so we started to plot and scheme.

After much diliberation, which ranged to the heresy and back again, we decided to choose Dark Angels (Bodhitree) and Space Wolves (Me) with a look to incorperating all the fluff and such about those two chapters before the eye of terror (No burying the hatchet on my watch!). Who knows, you might even see some fluff in this very thread - everyone say ooooo.

We've sat on this for awhile mainly because of a lack of time and funds, and not wanting to start a project log without anything to really show.

But now were here, and ready to get started!

This first posting will be a list of links to various things such as updates, other project logs by us, photobucket accounts - general gubbinz really. Feel free to ask questions and comment so I can also turn this into an FAQ!

I do take comissions on anything for anyone in any scheme apart from bloody bretonnians. Competitive rates - will work for food!

We're going to be playing up our strengths on this project - I will do more sculpting for certain things, and AD will be painting a few more of the centerpiece units. By the end we hope to have 2 fully functioning armies for our international project. There will be some mailing of things back and forth across the pond. Then when we're both finished I'll be flying over there, and we'll get our rears handed to us in a tournament of some sort.

I'm heavily considering only painting models with P3 paints for this venture - I'm not sure what AD's position is on that yet, but we'll iron it out. If he wants anymore GW paints though, I'll send them his way.

(Now I get an excuse to sculpt big beards instead of emo hair! Huzzah!)

Re: The Lion and The Wolf - Bodhitree and AD's Project Log

    Right, I'll introduce myself.

Hi I'm AD. Some of you may remember me from such project logs as Paint a Land Raider or Go hungry! (And before anyone starts *looks at SC* its being updated tonight I promise! ) or Penal Legion extrvaganza! (Currently on hold) - okay, enough with the simpsons homage. I dont exactly have a track record for finishing armies...

Over the next year or so (well, till the next conflict north), I'll be building a large space wolves army. The first question is the most obvious - why space wolves?

Space Wolves were the first things I purchased when I was about... ooo must have been five or six. The Wolf Guard Terminators in solid lead that I stripped in my erm... stripping log not so long back. I half purchased them because my cousin said they were cool, and half because one of them had a machine gun. Now I look back fondly and remember how cool they really were...

So awhile back when the codex came out I bought a small force and it became my first ever space marine army (my first legal army). They tore across the battlefield in there blocks of color, all on foot, and beat the opposition to a pulp. But I was never happy. I could never afford the long fangs I so desperately pinned for, nor could I hope to get my hands on a land raider, and my grey hunters would forever be armed with bolters and not the bolter/axe combo I always wanted. Nor would my painting ever truely do the models justice, as the model with the large red cross on his face, and the solid white hair testify too.

Now, five years or so later, where I'm getting paid to paint land raiders (yet still dont own one of my own), its time to head back to Fenris and let loose the dogs of war!

So what do I want in the army?

LONG FANGS!!! - Having envied Doghouses marines for awhile, and deciding that Bodhitree's army will look far too cool with all those lovely new vets if I dont pull my finger out, I've decided to do at least the long fangs doghouse style. Weapons wise I want to have two with heavy bolters (because I like heavy bolters) and two with missile launchers perhaps. I'm gonna wait to see whats in the box first and how they look on the models themselves before I put the other guns up for trade as I may want a second squad of long fangs...

I also want a land raider. Notibly the pre-heresy one from forge world with the brass etched sheet to funkify it. Yes I may have moaned about the annoyances of the kit, yes I may have cried when it all went wrong, but I'd still love to have one in this army purely for the fact that it'd be a great centre piece. Having said that, if I do end up dropping it, I'd add another squad of infantry. Whilst I wouldnt mind a dreadnought, Bodhi has already hinted strongly that he wants to get a certain forgeworld dread and that I'll be doing the paint job on him so I'm holding off for now...

I'm also pondering whether I should get some wolf guard terminators. I dont want them to look like armour dwarves though next to the long fangs so that could once again limit my choices. That doesnt bother me too much. I've always liked Grey Hunters more then any other marine unit, because they have such character for such an ordinary unit. Expect a great variety of weaponry in the squad, unless I reluctantly go full doghouse style, in which case its axes for everyone! Hussar!

The paint scheme is something I've been wracking my brain about since I settled on space wolves. I know I want to use one of my old pots of paint, meaning either blue grey or space wolves grey, but which? I'm also considering doing the long fangs in black. Chaplains are suppose to be the spiritual leaders in a marine army right? Well in a space wolves army there pretty much apothocaries, so would probably be a bit busy where as the long fangs...
I dunno yet though. I should probably have ordered a grey hunters squad first, but I'm an impatient sod at the best of times.

I should have (just to scare bodhi into action, mwahaha) the first heavy bolter marine assembled by Thursday night...

Painting wise, I think I'll invest in a few of the P3 paints if only for the fact that the man himself - Mike McVey - has put his name to them. Deciding to embrace Fenrisian attitudes whole heartedly, I take this to be a great omen - my original hero and my original army at the same time... Russ is watching my friends... indeed he is...

    For Russ!

Re: The Lion and The Wolf - Bodhitree and AD's Project Log

    I'll introduce myself too.

Most of you know me by my real name as Vee, but I would not be surprised if it got exchanged for Lazy-Pants McGee anytime soon. I am a Space Marine lovin' ho - y'know, one of those guys who gives 40k a bad name. Other armies are only filler releases between Space Marine Chapters as far as my mindset goes. (Please don't shoot me.) So the new DA releases have caught my eye.

I also don't finish things, as we all well know. I find ways to put things off by making them harder on myself, which is why you've seen me try to sculpt bases, hair, my own freaking Beakie helmets and studded armour. Now, AD, he gets stuff done. That, and I'm afraid of him, so I now have the greatest source of motivation possible for a hobbyist: a crazy guy on the other side of the world.

A few months ago I bought the wonderful Cypher model for no particular reason at all - now he will be the focal point of my army and central to the storyline. Right now I figure that whatever campaign they're on, the Dark Angels know Cypher is close by and would prefer not letting all of those wet noses the Space Wolves have in on it. Since I'm not fielding Cypher, he will be an objective marker.

I'm looking at a troop heavy army at the moment. There will be a couple Deathwing elements, because I can't let the Wolf Guard upstage me, and I'm going to make AD paint one of those new FW DA Dreads. I'm not completely sure if I'll be chucking in the Ravenwing, but I can't set anything in stone.

I will be sculpting a bunch of details for both armies, and I feel I really need the practice because: a) I have not done it in a while and b) I'd rather feel like I deserve the reactions I got in my Raven Guard log.

As for my two much neglected logs, they will not die. I want to get my confidence up a bit, and so I think working with AD will help me out there. I also want to get some games of WarMachine in this summer, and so I will need to paint up at least 500 points of them, which is actually just a handful of models, so yay.

The full P3 line launches on the 25th of this month (very close to the Foundation date... I wonder why....), and I'm very excited to use them, so my overhead might be a little steep. I do, however, have a large collection of Marines on hand, and so as far as troops go, I won't need to buy much for some time, except for those new DA sprues.

Re: The Lion and The Wolf - Bodhitree and AD's Project Log

But I'm waiting on the postie! Whose coming tomorrow allegedly... Until then I have a ton of holes to fill in on a certain land raider (I've been at it since I posted. Green stuff is not my friend)

Speaking of painting, hows your Krieg coming along *decides SC is third laziest squig on the boards after AD and Bodhi*

SJ - Cheers man, thats what were aiming for at the moment, as that gives us plenty of time to build something funky as well as enough time to plot and scheme properly. Not been to a tournie before... or played 40k in a long time... a very long time.

Also, again with the whole ominous nature of the army, in the related threads bit, this came up.

If AD doesn't yell at Vee to get to work, then I will over Messenger. I've been waiting for this log since Vee mentioned it to me and now that it is here, I shall follow it intently, and yell disgruntledly should you not meet your quotas. All in good fun of course.

I think I will be starting with a Predator Battle Tank. I've noticed in the last few months those Dark Angel Land Raiders which were literally murals on tracks, like Hortwerth's and a bunch I've seen on CMON.

I'm not nearly talented enough to free-hand like that, but then I got to thinking, what about doing relief sculptures of the cloaked angels on the tank? I'll just have the mural come out at you. This way I don't need to worry about much free-hand or stick on all those uniform Dark Angel gubbinz* that are out now.

I think I'll start with the construction of the tank tomorrow.

you could use CoD building reliefs on the sides of the tank? it'd need some cutting and whatnot but the basilica admin building has loads of cloaked figures on the side

AD - third? third? what about the boys on the exterminatus intervention log (don't take it personally fella's!)

Dude its hortworth and co - there's allowed to be lazy because chances are there's busy painting something exquisite that mere mortals such as I arent allowed to see *Cowers at hortworths land raider*

Plus, my theory is if I call you a lazy squig in multiple project logs/threads then it'll have you working, I get to look at some cracking krieg, which will then encourage me to paint more, which will then make me have some free time to paint krieg of my own!

And I can concentrate on Vee now I know he's beginning work tomorrow *AD's mordor style eye shifts its gaze across the pond*

I think the CoD building robbed guys might be a little big, but its worth investigating...

How about this lot, it may pain you to take inspiration from the Wolves but have a look at the LR near the bottom of the page:

Oh, I've no issue with the Wolves, unless I need to be 'in character', in which case they have to irk me on principle. But that is exactly what I was thinking about! Thank you for the link.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I need to write two exams today, and then the Predator comes off the sprue.

You mean you don't go around wearing robes all day? To honour Russ I drink beer and will often go several days without shaving, until the boss or the girlfriend complains

You mean you don't go around wearing robes all day?
As a student, I feel its my right and duty to wear my dressing gown for at least 90% of the week.

    Firstly, obligatory dog picture!

Secondly, look what the post man brought me (rammed it through the bloody letter box but thankfully all unharmed. Oh and I had to convert the things too).

I'm leaving the boots on because it fits them really. You also cant really tell but they both have torsos from the space wolves sprue (the whole squad will). I'm not happy with the pack leader but meh, I didnt think I would be. I might give him an axe that I order for just such an eventuallity...

The heavy bolter marine is exactly the kind of model that I want in this army. One that isnt 'oh look hes covered in wolf tails* and tooths so is obviously a space wolf'. They should look slightly barbaric, the odd pelt here, but nothing more then that really.

I've also just thought about how the wolf pelt from the SW sprue will fit on these models quite nicely.

The devestators sprues cost me 15 quid (ebay rules) and the bits came from the bits box which whilst limited got em here promptly. Overal I'd say they cost the same for the unit as if I'd bought straight from GW, with the exception of the bits which if I'd been at home I would have scavanged anyway.

I should have these fully built by tonight, I'm just pondering whether to assemble the rocket launcher or not...

    * I worry about wolves on fenris. Some SW armies look like the iron priest has been round with a pair of sacatures...

The devs look great so for AD. The only thing that bugs me about the sergeant is the power fist. It doesnt' seem practical on a dev sergeant to me. An axe or something would be better IMO and probably make them model look a bit better overall.
