Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Ok heres an update on my second building, a model order arrived this week SO im trying not to neglect my terrain too much.. So here is my "interactive" archway building that is based on the mordheim ruins featured here : http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page192.html

So far i have made the archways from thick cardboard and wrapped it around a piece of balsa to strengthen then shape. At the moment im working on the floor boards which are done similliarly to the privvy posted above. I can post more details if anyone has questions about this.

    Enjoy the pics

    C&C appreciated

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Looks interesting, is there a plan to have it joining another building? Are you using corrigated cardboard for the walls? I would be a bit worried about strength, maybe some on that balsa could be used internally on the walls or at least in the four corners.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Thanks Bugbait, Yes its corrugated cardboard for the walls which is quite strong. I think your right about extra balsa, although the corners are quite strong perhaps pillers in the archways would tackle any stability issues. As for attaching it to another building im undecided. I wanted it to be accesible from both sides, like a good sniper spot that isn't a death trap. Perhaps i could attach it to a construction site, maybe a 3 tier scaffolding affair ? That would be a perfect perch for range attacks and then have the run of this building to escape while having range(y) goodness.

    Any Thoughts ?

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Just a little update, I have built the broken walls although im still adding the wooden decals the floor boards are black and im confident about the roof scaffolds. Most importantly i got some cobblestones for the towns base AND IT WAS FREE ! Textured wall paper at B&Q just grab a few meters (more if you have balls of steel) and tell them your taking it as a tester. Ok so this may not seem amazing to you folks but its my first time decorating and i couldn't believe it when my GF told me i could take it and i was gonna shell out £10 for 15m squared. She got a little worried thinking i was gonna paper the lounge with textured wallpaper !!

Anyway im gonna post some pics once iv slapped some tester colours on it.

Bugbait, a thousand thankyous for a fantastic link !! I was struggling to decide where to take this project but that board has really inspired me !!

Hastings thanks, i hope to be able to show you more of my work, grats on your recent "Tale of Fantasy Painters" offering.

Ok so just a quick piccy of one of the roof braces. Its balsa wood strips, i hope more explaination is not necessary. Just needs tiling now... Now im gonna do some test painting on the textured wallpaper, so stand by for a second update 2nite?

    C&C is always appreciated.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Ok second update tonite, I have painted up the wallpaper but am not happy with it yet. i think some lighter dry brushes and perhaps some sand/mud/grass to add character.

Also thought i would post a pic of the roof brace in position, its just held together with blue-tac til i make the other one and match a nice angle.

So you've taken the time to read my log... why not make a comment ?

Hrmmmmm. I wouldnt like to use wallpaper as after a few plays it will get beaten up and look crap. IMHO that is.

Steam-Giant - love the roofing! Excellent work so far.

@ Ewan: I can see your point - put perhaps if it's properly treated (perhaps give it a spray of something or layer of PVA) before painting, it'd be tougher... Just a thought!

Liking the roofing woodwork, make sure you dont cover them all up with tiles as it looks good already.

Any chance of posing a mini next to your building for your next pics, I didnt realise how big the last peice was until I saw your hand!

I recon pva painted over the wallpaper should work, only one way to find out!!

Hope these give you a better idea of scale ?

Ok so these are prolly the last piccies till sometime next weekend after i move house !! YAY !! my own space to play and do housework naked and throw my clothes on the floor and leave my paints and sharp objects all over the place, and stay up all night watching bad movies and leave the washing up till it congeals and neighbours to annoy and horrible cooking experiments and stack up my dirty washing till it entices me into philosophical debates on its own existance and.. and... and... ...

Yes PVA would work. But not 100% convinced

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Ok the move is almost finished ( Just living in an obstacle course at the moment). Heres just a quick update. I have finished off the second roof brace, glued them together and slapped a coat of paint on it. I also found some spray cans of "Touch stone" in local DIY shop. I have used "Santa Fe" on the bottom part of the building and im confident it will work out good.

    On with the pics

That stone affect looks good (nice and simple too). I've used them before, they drybrush pretty well.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Thx Ozymandiass, i hadn't thought about dry brushing yet ? but your right it was so simple to use, i masking taped off the wood areas and sprayed a generous amount on, unfortunatley i got a little carried away when taking pictures and left some fingerprint damage on one side

Thank you too Khrangar, although flying half way round the world to steal my buildings would be a great adventure ! why not have a go at building one yourself ? I hope i have left enough pictures and stuff for anyone to be able to copy what i have done.

Im really pleased with the way this building is turning out. Im using the other touch stone paint to make small stone tiles to outline the building corners and the arches. Also the roof braces still need some work to look more like ancient timber.

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

C&C is good for the soul !! Go on give it a try !

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Almost 10 days without an update !? Well heres a progress report since ive had a lazy saturady to play. The wooden bits have had the once over with some brown acrylic and the outer walls have had the sand treatment as per last building also the inner walls have been painted black, which i may leave or colour ? Also i have added some tiles to the roof, i didn't want to do too many but i hope i have done enough ? Your C&C would be appreciated..

    Heres the pics:
