    Platty and his 40k

Well, I have recently rejoined the hobby after several years away. My return is prompted by many things, not least amongst them was joining several gaming clubs to give me something to aim for. I always found as a teenager that the lack of games I played meant I never got much painted - there was just no motivation on my part to bother.

So, I am now hoping to get back in to many games. I decided to start with 40k, although my initial forays were back into Blood Bowl, hence why I have a full Skaven team. But, now I am back properly, I have gone for aGuard army, The 45th Marovian Foot. The fluff is not in place, and I am only a fifth of the way through the army, with loads to do. I eventually intend to get back into everything such as epic and BFG, but thought a 1,000pt 40k army was a good test bed.

However, without further rambling, here is the first test mini for the colour scheme. Plese feel free to critique.

Please be aware that I am new to this log buisness, so if the image doesn't work I apologise. However, should it be succesful, then expect to see more pictures before the end of the week

Nice job so far, it'll be nice to see more of these. The only thing I'm not sure about is the chainsword; it just looks odd somehow.

Nice work, and welcome back. The colour scheme looks good, and is new to me, nice to see some original thinking. My only critique would be that the sword seems to be poor compared to the rest of the model, but for a test fig the overall result is nice- the next test is to see it across a squad. Have you given any consideration to basing, or will that come later as the army progresses?

Thanks for the compliments. I have to agree that the chainsword looks odd. The main reason was that I was rushing the model to get it done to attend my newly found gaming club and couldn't think what to do. That being said, I have since completed a couple of chainsword wielding sgt's and the casing of the weapon is now painted bone to match the armour, which I think looks much better. I have also learnt a new technique for the eyes, to avoid the mad bug look!

So far the army consists of about 50 infantry. I have almost completed a command squad and a second infantry squad. One infantry squad is done and I shall be posting pictures very very soon - it's a bit dark for pictures at the moment. The bases I have gone for brown with a few drybrushes on top and then a little static grass, which should hopefully show up in the photos. However, in the mean time, to give you a general idea, here's what I have planned:

The dudes I currently own are straight out the box figures. Once these are done I intend to mix in a bit of Forge World stuff to expand the army out to no less than 93 infantry models (1,000pts). Once done I will then start on some vehicles, and see where that takes me. I first wanted a very solid infantry force before expanding outwards.
After that, who knows? I would like to get into Epic in a big way, and a friend and I have plans a foot for the doubles tournament with a Tau/Eldar army. I would also like to revisit my old Space Marine chapter, "The Sons Of Neptune." We shall see, all I can say is stay tuned.

Looks like my old desire to have every army going hasn't left me! Mental note to self, don't tell girlfriend of very expensive plans for the future...

I'm really liking the bone and how it fits with the red armour...

Actually I just like bone in general

    Re: Platty and his 40k

sweet! Nice painting for someone who has had several years away from it.

I did that, back in 2001 to about 2003, i got into it full on and all i talked about was 40k, 40k, 40k FORTY KAY, then for some reason i got bored of it, and i think it being expensive turned me off it, then i gave up painting and modelling and gaming, until june last year i started earning my own money, and i realised how cheap it is on eBay........... Now i have too much models to paint and not enough time!

Anyway, keep up the good work.

    Re: Platty and his 40k

    Thanks for the comments guys.
As promised, now the light is a little better, got some more pictures for you to give you an idea what the paint scheme looks like. However, first off is the traditional "workspace shot." It also includes a lot of the WIP guard, including about a dozen that need basing and five that are half done.

I have also based my commander who is now finished.

Overall I am very happy with how he turned out, think he looks quite imposing. As daft as it sounds I was most pleased with the little details such as his bionic eye and hi las-pistol holster. So what do you all think?

    Re: Platty and his 40k

Also, here are the first ten troopers, completed to give a better idea of how the colour scheme looks in numbers. You can also see the sarge has had the bone coloured chainsword casing. It's not really clear in this shot but it is better than on the test mini.

That's were the army stands at the moment. I am hoping by the end of the week to have based another ten guys and be near the end of completing another five. The army is off to Warhammer World tonight for a game, so we shall see how it performs (Usually it is slaughtered to a man).

And before anyone asks how I paint so fast, this lot has been completed over the last few months, it just took me till now to get a log going!

I really love your commander especially! The colorscheme is very nice here <^_^>
I'm going to take a break from Warseer for a bit to deal with my bipolar, which is acting up ferociously lately. Please accept my apologies for any insult or offense I may have caused - though I feel my sentiment was correct, I have been overly aggressive and hostile of late; and I am sorry for that.

Hopefully I will return in better mental working order. Good luck all!

    Re: Platty and his 40k

Well, I just returned from Warhammer world.

What can I say. My guys were slaughtered almost to a man. This is the norm for me, mainly because I always play my friend's frankly lethal Eldar army. I got around 7 glancing hits on his skimmers, but not one went down cos of his holo fields. Man I hate those things.

On the plus side spent a bit of money. Got me some undercoat and a pair of tweezers so the girlfriend will be off my back about using hers.

Most importantly I got the two junior officers who will lead my two infantry platoons. Since so far I have been painting safe and just using one high light, I am going to push the boat out and really try and do my best with them.

That being said, work is as always getting in the way, so I may not get them done soon. Should have an update by Sunday at the latest with some guys based up and I am hoping to get some of the initial stages done on my Junior Officers by then so stay tuned.

    Re: Platty and his 40k

Just a quick update before work. I have managed to get the two officers cleaned up. They just need some GS on the bases to hide the gaps and they are ready for priming. Just behind them you can see some special weapon troops who I bagged off of eBay on the cheap.

Whilst I am at work this evening, I have a question for you all. I was thinking of drilling out the bolt pistol barrels on these guys. Now bearing in mind I am trying to strike a balance between getting an army ready and doing a good paint job without spending two weeks per model, would it be worth it? I can't decide.

    Thoughts and opinions please.

I drill out holes for all my guns, but its a pain in the backside with the smaller metal ones - usually end up sticking the pin vice into my thumb!
...and though we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are; one equal temper of heroic hearts, made weak by time and fate, but strong in will; to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Is that yes or a no? I quite like my intact thumbs, so I'll put that in the no column!

Ah come on, no pain no gain, its only blood and manual dexterity that are at stake!

    Re: Platty and his 40k

So, looks like I might try drilling them out after all then. Shall see if I can find a small enough drill bit.

    Update -

The special weapons and the two junior officers have had the gaps GS'd and are getting primed some point over the next few days. I will then be setting to work on them with updates to follow at various stages.

I have a finished medic that I am pleased with but I can't get the pictures online yet, cos for some reason, photobucket won't connect. I will try to get them up as soon as possible as I am quite keen to see what you all think.

    Re: Platty and his 40k

A quick update for you, as I am not likely to get much more done over the next few days. I have managed to complete the medic for the HQ. Opinions and criticisms welcome

That's all I got done last night due to a grand total of 30 minutes work. I apologise for the dark photos but the light was a bit iffy....

The army is facing off against a Marine Army tomorrow, so check back as I will update the result soon as I can. I expect another slaughter. My Skaven Blood Bowl team will also be taking to the field with results to follow should anyone be interested.

I really like the highlighting on the red uniforms...and you are right to be proud of the details (e.g. the holster on the commander)...they're great!

Nice combination of colours, I like the contrast between the red and the khaki. The medic is looking realy nice too, but maybe you could make the red cross a bit sharper around the edges by gooing back with some white paint?
