    Ultramarine deviancy?

    Greetings,

I'm looking at the traits in my marine codex, and some of them look so effin' cool. Would it be possible (or at least fair and fluffy) to have, say, a company of Ultramarines with an apothecary in each tactical squad, or 6 dreadnoughts, or a devastator company?

    Help!

Not really, but to be brutally honest, how you field your army is your business. It could represent any sort of abnormal situation (rather than an abnormal formation). Heck, it's even possible to have Space Marines in the army painted all different colors with different chapter icons on them and such because such "crusade forces" aren't exactly unknown. The only "problem" you're going to have is picking them out as a cohesive force. That is, to assist verisimilitude ("realism"/"believability"), you might need to put different company designations on some of the models in order to represent a few companies working together (esp. on the 6 dread army)...if you're really worried about people looking at it and saying, in a self-righteous tone, "Nuh-UH! No way this army is fluffy!"

A devestator company could technically happen since codex chapters tend to have a devestator reserve company. I don;t see them being deployed as a single battle force except in the most exceptional circumstances Same with Dreads, some companies will have that many but they're rarely deployed en masse. The only instance I can think of is Ghattana bay and the Battle for Gate IX, but those dreads were from lots of different chapters.
As for Apothecaries; one to each squad in a whole company seems out of the question - in real terms there probably should be, if only for Geneseed reclamation. In practice I don't think there are enough Apothecaries in a chapter for that kind of deployment.
Take a moment to think before you hit the reply button. I learnt that the hard way.

The third edition codex is a pretty good way to get some guidelines on how each company in the Ultramarines is formed, since it has a complete roster of the chapter as of 745.M41. It lists the number of Dreadnoughts per company, and lots of other assorted details.

Well, traits dont fit to the Ultras, as they are fluffwise the epitome of a codexchapter. The only exception might be a gamer, who plays ether the 8th or 9th reservecompany. But in this case i would use no specialcharacters or -units of the Ultramarines, as it would kill the balance of the game.

I suppose you could, but fluff wise, better make a UM descendant chapter
265 law of Imperial Guard conduct: one should not sneak up onto ones commanding officer and shout 'BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!'

    Re: Ultramarine deviancy?

I would encourage the use of purely organizational traits to field one of the reserve companies (6th Bikers, 8th Assault, 9th Devastators) - it's every way as interesting as fielding a first Company using the Deathwing list.

One thing you'd have to drop would be the Ultramarines specials - Tyrannic War Veterans, Honour Guard and Special characters, because at the moment you take traits, you drop the original Ultramarines rule set.

And how you paint your models is entirely your business. Though you might meet some raised eyebrows from die-hard Ultramarine players...
