    Naming your ships

Well, since I'm soon t have some AM ships I've been wondering what to call them. Ugh, I don't want to call them standard IM ship names. I toyed with greek monsters, or roman gods, but meh, they just don't suit the ad mech. So does anyone have any suggestions? How about titan names? I'd imagine they'd be similar.

    How about other ship names?

Currently, my ships are called after all sorts.

Orks: Bizmork, Ork Royul, Slobbaknocka and Fang ov Boneyface (after her captain, the minor celebrity from Xenology)

Basically, word play on famous ships. Hey, this compnay made a character called orkimedes!

DE: Miserati, Czernobog, Lusankya and Katratzi

Two summons from shadowhearts, a stardestroyer prisonship from x-wing: rogue squadron books, and Katratzi, the mysterious prison from Farscape.

So how about you - lets hear your ship names!

"Tranquil Hegemony" and "Calm Horizons" for some of my Tau ships, even though they're not supposed to be named.

Also, see Culture ships for epic lulz.

    Re: Naming your ships

You could name them similar to Imperial ships, but any references made to people replaced with references to technology or the Omnisiah.

    EG:
    Emperor's Glory ==> Omnisiah's Glory
Ark of Noah ==> Ark of Enlightment

    or

    Quest for Technology

    Re: Naming your ships

In the rulebook they have suggested how ships are named depending on how, why and where they are built. So I can't possibly think of any other scenario(fluffwise) where an AM ship is built anywhere else than at the forges of Mars. Therefore they are probably named in high gothic(=latin).

Just google for a latin-english dictionary or similar and off you go ^^

I have my ships named after their role and like a family theme. Like my Retribution seems like head of the family or a fatherfigure, so I namned it "Sator Prasentia", witch means something like dominant father(or large manlimb for all I know) ^^

Genetrix is also a nifty sounding name with means something like mother/producer/spawner, and suitably have been alocated to my Mars Class Cruiser(spawning launchbays)

The best thing would be if you have access to a larger type of library, that have latin dictionarys, instead of finding it on the web. After all, it's only up to you to decide what to trust or not from the web.

Indeed, but I'd imagine a fleet is all made at one forgeworld - and a fleet named sword of mars, fist of mars etc would be quite boring

Just google for a latin-english dictionary or similar and off you go ^^
    I've tried, they're all useless

    Eugh, I'm allergic to effort

So far I've got Warmachine, Questing Knight and Lionheart. I'm still not particularly taken with them - the last two were from my ideas for a BT fleet.

I think roman names are the way to go though.

    Re: Naming your ships

I've decided to go with Roman names, but try and get away from UM type names. Tigrus, Marneus etc are out, whilst Caligula, Pollux and Castor are in! Other roman names for ships are usually after roman dietys or rivers/places. So tyrannical leaders it is!

Also going to have ships named spear of destiny and a squadron named Legio Longinus, because, well, I like those names The lance of longinus is one of my favourite religious icons.

Also, going to name my fleet Classis Stygies. Cool huh?

    Re: Naming your ships

My Chaos fleet is using Greek mythology names.. Wrath of Achilles, Bringer of tears(from the original epic PC game), demeter etc..

And my Ork fleet are using names jumbled togeather from the Gorka morka book with ork glyphs and their meaning..

    Re: Naming your ships

My Chaos fleet (50+ ships) are all named after demons - even the Escorts. I went through most mythologies, Dante, Paradise Lost, etc.

    Re: Naming your ships

To the Imperium's knowledge, the Necrons don't name their ships. Confirmed sightings do assign tagnames to energy signatures, though, for Ordo Xenos records (much like they assign names to all alien vessels, since even their real names wouldn't translate well into High Gothic). Since Necrons don't have very much personality, you could try to name them creatively or just assign them numbers ("Deep Space Anomaly 1234.567") or something like that.

Remember you can always use Imperial designations as 'names'. Most of the Chaos names in the rulebook are in fact that I believe.

    Re: Naming your ships

My Imperial Fleet had names that i thought up or read about at the time i happened to finish painting the fleet, my ships are called:

    Battleships:
    Emperor Class-
Fidei Defensor (Defender of the Faith)

    Oberon Class-
    Bellerephon

    Battlecruisers:
    Armageddon Class-
    Agamemnon
    Prometheus

    Mars Class-
    Astra Imperator

    Overlord Class-
    Sword of Retribution

    Cruisers:
    Lunar Class-
    Holy Endeavour
    Hammer of Divine Retribution

    Tyrant Class-
    Righteous Zeal

    Dominator Class-
    Lord Raukov

    Gothic Class-
    Valiant
    Scimitar
    Intrepid

    Dictator Class-
    Emperor’s Perdition

    Light Cruisers:
    Dauntless Class-
    Viaticum (Voyager)
    Prendere (Enterprise)
(these names may be back to front, been a while)

The Agamemnon is my flagship as its totally kick ass and way cheaper than a Battleship. Was thinking about getting an AdMech Cruiser to add a little variety, probably call it something like Spirit of the Forge to give it a mystical (some might say Fantasy) quality

    Chaos AL Fleet
    Alpharius's Wrath- battle ship
    Hydra Fang- murder class cruiser
    Hydra Claw- murder class cruiser

    Eviscerator- carnage class cruiser
    Dark Jihad- Devestation class cruiser
    Harbringer- Devestation class cruiser
    Reavers- idolator class escorts
    Corsairs- infidel class raiders
