What is in a name? An Ork by any other name would still see us as meat.

    How about other ship names?

Currently, my ships are called after all sorts.

Orks: Bizmork, Ork Royul, Slobbaknocka and Fang ov Boneyface (after her captain, the minor celebrity from Xenology)

Basically, word play on famous ships. Hey, this compnay made a character called orkimedes!

DE: Miserati, Czernobog, Lusankya and Katratzi

Two summons from shadowhearts, a stardestroyer prisonship from x-wing: rogue squadron books, and Katratzi, the mysterious prison from Farscape.

So how about you - lets hear your ship names!

Lusankya? Like the Super Star Destroyer?

My Admech Cruiser is named "Glory of the Omnissiah" Because I was too lazy to care. I don't plan to field it much anyway..

My Imperial ships are as follows:

    Ravira's Sword - Emporer Battleship

    Asukaria - Dominator class

    Incorruptible - Lunar class

These three ships are specials, on duty from other sectors. The rest of my fleet will have Valhallan (.. er.. russian?) names.

I'm almost tempted to scrap my fleet's fluff and base them on Krieg, since.. well.. Ich liebe Deutsch.

That is an awesome name for an Imperial warship .

I had all of my ships names written down somewhere but have since lost them. You guys are giving me a lot of good ideas for when I go back to rename my fleet (it kind of sucks when it comes down to "I'm going to have Armageddon cruiser on the short base go on Lock On and Dictators tall base and short base will Reload Ordnance"...).

I tried to explain to someone why we name the bigger ships, and I used an example like that.

    .. They didn't understand.

    pity them for their ignorance

naming your models is of utmost importance in games like BFG, Mordheim, Necromunda & Inquisitor

it gives character to your fleet etc and you feel it when they die are destroyed.

    Re: Naming your ships

my ad mech ships are being named with terms quite well known to any university student. since the ad mech are always searching for knowledge i thought it was appropriate. i just tried to translate the terms into latin for the cool factor
battleship - Litteratum Divinatio = the educated guess
cruiser - Multiplico Arbitratus = the multiple choice
cruiser - Frustro Interrogatio = the trick question
light cruiser - Aeprendendi Attentare = the surprise quiz
light cruiser - Evolutio Quietum = the quiet break
light cruiser - Lucubratio = the all nighter
light cruiser - Tardusum Discipulus = the late student

i thought it would be amuzing to anyone in the know about what the names mean

    Re: Naming your ships

When I built my initial fleet, I rather unimaginatively used the names in the BFG book. Mainly to use the upgrades. Since those initial ones I've since added many new ships with their own names.

    Battleships
    -----------
Beauteous (Emperor Class, led by Solar Admiral Vayne)
    Magus (Oberon Class)
(An unammed Retribution... I just realized I've never named it, just always called it "The Retribution"...)

    Battlecruisers
    -------------
    Imperius (Mars)
    Hermes (Armageddon)
    Cypra Probatii (Overlord)

    Cruisers
    --------
    Zealot (Tyrant)
    Archon Kort (Dictator)
    Anvil of Mor (Dictator)
    Celeste (Gothic)
    Akasha (Lunar)
    Thantos (Lunar)
    Aether (Lunar)
Invincible (Gothic - has NEVER been destoyed, even after being boarded by a Khorne marked Styx!)

    Light Cruiser
    ------------
    Guardian (Dauntless)
    Havok (Dauntless)
Javelin (Dauntless Variant - 6+ Prow & Ram)

That's from memory, I'm sure there's more. Many ships were damaged over the years so I don't have a full fleet ready anymore. Would be nice to see them all up again...

As far as naming the Adeptus Mechanicus ships goes, we at least have one example "Omnissiahs Victory", so they don't all have to be in "latin" names. Even simple one word names like "Knowledge", "Power", "Devotion" might work...

    Re: Naming your ships

I named all of my ships after food (mostly French). So my Styx is called Steak Tar Tare and the Murder is called Baguette. The escorts are named after deserts, so Creme Brule and Crepes.

    Re: Naming your ships

Honestly, I use references from everywhere in my names, even cheating at times. Sod it all if I can recall the classes off of the top of my head.

Half A League Onwards - Line from a Tennyson poem
    Enterprise - Why not?
    Across The Universe
    Emperor's Lament
    Impervious
    Eleanor Rigby
A Fighting Chance To Live - "My God, Bones! What have we done?"
    Carry That Weight
The Emperor's Show Must Go On
Being For The Benefit Of The Emperor - "...there will be a show tonight/ on trampoline! The Hendersons will all be there..."
Lord Trafalgar's Most Excellent Skill With Maneuvering And Gunnery
98% of all teenagers do something you don't like. If you're of the 2% who don't like what they do (which you are), then whenever you pass one of those punks try to act like you're too cool for them, but mutter something about "punks and whippsnappers." That'll show them.

    Re: Naming your ships

My Imperial fleet used to be named after ancient gods and heroes as follows:

    Agammemnon - Emperor Class
    Juno - Dominator Class
    Ajax - Mars Class
    Xerxes - Lunar Class
    Hera - Dictator Class

But now they have an actual backstory and as a result formal "High Gothic" (read: schoolboy latin) names.

The Emperor is called the Gloria Imperialis ("Imperial Glory") and its sister ship the Potens Imperialis ("Imperial Power" - when I buy it).

The to-be flagship will be the Salve Mea ("Save Me") and the other ships are named by theme in squadron - the Dominator, Mars and Lunar form a squadron named "Praetoria", "Imperia" and "Victoria" (Power, Authority and Victory) while the soon-to-be three Dictators that will form another are "Nobilitas," "Virtu" and "Pietas" (Nobility, Virtue and Piety)

I'm not sure which scheme is better, and it could all change! But as it is they are to be all black with white prows.

He replied "The glass is too big."

    Re: Naming your ships

I gave my IN ships Royal Navy names as used in the battle of Jutland 1916. With one exception: My scratchbuilt Endeavour CL got the name Marathon. Don't ask me why, but I thought it would be appropriate to it.
