    Re: Naming your ships

I've been considering making a blackship, and I just can't think of any better name than Invisible Hand. It's the name of General Grievous's ship from Episode 3, and bears no relevance to it's role in that movie, but as an Inquisitors ship it's absolutely amazing.

I'm going to get a transport ship for my AM and name it Absolum, from Gaunts Ghosts too.

    Re: Naming your ships

I've always found naming my ships easy, I name them for their history.

My favourite ship, a Tau ship no less, I have named the Torn Decider, as i am always torn between choosing targets for it.

Or my Imperial Sword which I've named the Solemn Martyr, because it's always reduced to the act of a suicidal charge at the enemy after losing most of it's systems. In the past, it has killed everything from a Cruiser to a Chaos Planet-killer.

    Re: Naming your ships

As I said in the other ship names thread I took many names from the BFG book, but one of them has certainly lived up to its name. The Invincible. I don't think it has ever been destroyed in a game yet (crippled yes, disengaged yes).

The greatest cinematic moment was when it was boarded by a Chaos Styx led by a Khorne Fleet Master while in the gravity well of a planet. By sheer awesome (and poor for Chaos) rolling the Invincible managed to not only repel the attack, but damage the Styx enough to reduce Daemon Lord Xixix's flagship to a hulk, which then proceeded to fall down and crash in a flaming ruin on the planet below.

    Re: Naming your ships

My ship were made at a cardinal world so they all have very religious and ignorant names. My battle ship is called Kindness of the Wise (think about it, what kind of kindness could it refer to, hm?). Other names are:

    Righteous Hatred *
Hate Enriches * my tag-team light cruisers
    Emperor's Intolerance
    Emperor's Mercy
    His Majesty's Malevolence
    Unmerciful Tyrant
    Divine Oppression
    Gospel of Apocalypse
    Righteous Obedience
    Divine Atrocity

oh, and my first ship name, the Resplendent. I know, you're all jealous...

If a genestealer could steal jeans, a genestealer would steal as many jeans as a genestealer would want to steal.

Myself, I have a Chaos fleet but I tried to avoid the standard Arrgh Murdery Slaughter-style names. The fleet is Tzeentchian-themed, so there are a lot of wizardy things in there.

    Desolation-class Battleship Thaumaturge
    Repulsive-class Grand Cruiser Magister
    Hades-class Heavy Cruiser Changeling
    Slaughter-class Cruisers Pedagogue and Demagogue
Devastation-class Cruisers Angra Mainyu and Spenta Mainyu
Murder-class Cruisers Ruinous Destiny and Eye of Fate
Infidel Squadron The Twisting Path, composed of Atropos, Clothos, and Lachesis
Idolator Squadron The Yawning Void, composed of Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld

Also I started off a Salamander Space Marine fleet but only got as far as naming two escorts Faithful and Ardent. Finally I named someone else's Retribution class as Faith Indomitable.

If your naming Adeptus Mechanicus ships I would recommend taking into account 2 things- one, the Admech Dont worship the Emperor, and two they are arrogant as hell.

So names like Emperor's Justice or Faithful are out.

Cant think of any good sggestions for names right now, mebbe you could check out the Horus Heresy books or other 40k novels for insipartion?

    Heinie

as a side note, I played a BFG campaign with Imperial ships from worlds that had been brought into the Tau Empire. Human auxillary ships as it were. So I named them stuff like "Liberty" and "Lights Hope"

My Chaos fleet are almost all named after different Star Destroyers from Star Wars, several of which are based on greek myths, so it works quite well for my Iron Warriors. Especially my flagship Iron Fist.

    Re: Naming your ships

So far I've got a few names for my Imperial/SM and Chaos fleets:

    Emperor - Galatea
Battlebarge - Peregitor Divinus ("Divine Pilgrim/Wanderer" if I parsed the Latin correctly)
Strike Cruisers -Conquistador, Connestoga (the latter a kinda in-joke on the Aliens movie background)
    Armaggeddon battlecruiser - Phoenix Resurgent
Lunars - Valorious, Facta non Verba ("Deeds not Words" basically)
    Swords (1 squadron) - Fides,Fortitudo,Frater,Fortes,Finis

For my Chaos fleet fluffwise they're the ships of a Chaos warband called the Black Jest, so they will all have names reflecting that once I come up with enough of them. I have a Hades named Last Laugh, and I'm currently planning to get a Desolator named Punchline, among others.

Goq Gar, I think that "Solem Martyr" is a Brilliant name for a ship. Kudos on that one. Wish id thought of it.

I think some good names for AM ships would be based around scientific terminology, with a bit of dogma mixed in. So perhaps:

    Divine Equilibrium
    Beauteous Equation
    Perfect Resolution
    Sought Solution
    Moment of Clarity
    Eternal Perfection
    Arm of the Machine God
    Eye of the Omnissiah
    Fist of Mars
    Gryphonne's Talon
    Sword of Ryza

(the last three are named for the only Forgeworlds I can remember)

Alternatively, they're arrogant enough to name ships after themselves, most like. So just call your flagship the Magos Tyresius or something and his cruisers after the Adepts commanding them.

    Re: Naming your ships

    Retribution: Imperitors Hand
Emperor: Tuirs Fil (Name of one of my largest battles, 6kpts lone survivor, so I renamed her)
    Apoca: Blazing Fire
    Overlord : Imperious
Overlord : Vi Ci (I Conquer?)
    Mars: Talons of Light
Gothic: Timius Prime (First fight was over this world)
    Gothic: Orion
    Gothic: Devestator
    Lunar: Vae Victus
    Lunar: Imperious Victus
    Tyrant: His Hand
    Dictator: Treov
    Dauntless: Cimius
    Dauntless: Dimius
    Dauntless: Fimius
    Dauntless: Rimius
    Cobra Squadron: Halies Gulf
    Cobra Squadron: Red Four
    Cobra Squadron: Silver Skulls
    Firestorm Squadron: Golden eagle
    Firestorm Squadron: Imius Patrol
    Firestorm Squadron: Peralus Prime
Sword Squadron: Reacard Itius (Name of my admiral, given to him as a gift when he assumed command of the battlefleet by the local govenor)

I just randomly created the names as I aquired the ships. I named some after the planets or pieces of space we fought in. I named some for humor or wit. The dauntless I named because it gets people to ask me questions when they read it. Soon I will add more to my collection of stuff to look at on a shelf and hope the people I play with will get more eventually.

I name my Imperial ships after ships from World War II. Chaos after what ever strikes my fancy. My Khorne flagship is the "Kream Khorne".

    Re: Naming your ships

Perseus. Retribution From the Greek Legend. It has never been crippled or destroyed even in a battle where every one of its weapons was disabled by critical hits
Hammer of Char. Got this from a online science fiction ship generator never impressed with it but it has through shear luck managed to get the following upgrades in a campaign Navigational Shields Improved Sensory Array Reinforced Hull I quite like this slow dreadnought.
Flying Dutchman. from the 1951 film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman not the Johnny Depp film
Adriatic. From the sea. I should really stop using it for ramming when it gets to close to the battleline but the order "Prepare for ramming speed!" is too fun.
Hydra Gothic I use it a a massive escort for Perseus
    Tiger Tyrant Tigers are cool.
Myrmidon Dominator Not a fan of the nova cannon so i use the torpedo varient.
Galatica Dictator from the Imperium Galactica computer game.
Enterprise Dauntless Got to have at least one
    Mamba Viper destroyer
    Coral Viper destroyer
    Adder Viper destroyer
    Green snake Viper destroyer
    Asp Viper destroyer
    Faros Firestorm
    Immolator Firestorm
    Infurna Firestorm
