Project Logs:
Dark Eldar (ongoing) and Skaven (dead) and Digital Wastrel, my blog.
Ciao, I'm always glad when new people comes here and take the time to post. Enjoy your stay mate
Maybe I went for a too light dusting on that bit, but I'm afraid that it's a tad late to add something more pigment - I fear that the fixer will mess with the flat black surface, sometimes it may confer a "greasy" look (think something like an oil wash gone wrong). This is why I moved to fixing pigment by spray varnish (and no, I don't want to give it a third coat of matt varnish since the model it's already very matt).
Thanks, but this was the very first time I tried it - it's not that difficult, if you have the time I'd invite you to try.
Thanks, I hope that now that is finished it looks even better.
Congrats on having the willpower to go all through the log. What I said to Claudiomarino apply to you as well
An update without pics? Naaaa:
A side note on the choice for the crewman: following IA2 scheme, when a full tactical squad rides in a rhino the veteran sergeant occupy the seat next to the driver - I chose to depict the sarge firing with the strom bolter because f this consideration. Also, I imagined that the right hand would be holding some sort of control device for the searchlight, so I didn't bother to modify the arm and took the one that comes from the rhino box.
Tell me if you like it, please

I like it, the idea and the execution, it looks a little awkward but cool. Nice job, very different to the average rhino.

Eldar - 2/2/1.
Dark Angels - 5/2/1.
Chaos - 1/0/0.
That's very nice and realistic paint job. Your weathering style is always impressive to behold. I especially like the soot around the exhausts.

I think you're referring to the sergeant holding the "searchlight control device" when you say awkward, don't you? Yeh I agree, but given my general lazyness I tried to blu-tac him in position and thought it was looking good, so I didn't bother for the strange look of it.
Thanks Solun, I recently discovered your chaos log - very impressive I must say(in a good way, naturally)
I may guess about 8 hours - 2 for preshading, base colour, the tactical arrow marking and various details, 2/ 2 and half for weathering (especially to highlight all those bloody scratches!), 1 for the sergeant and about three for the interior. Maybe I'm a bit on the short side with my guessing, but I don't think I went past ten hours total. They were very diluted through time though
Right, now I'm about to annoy you with some WIP:
Just the armour colours are halfway finished, I'm not still convinced on some light points but I think I'fix them later when I'll progress a bit more and get a general idea of the lighting. Until then, I'd love to hear some feedback on my first try at airbrushed zenital light (with the help of some wash and edge higlight).
@ Rabid Monkey: here's your cookie
You may pick up the one you want (hell, you may pick them up all, the rhino turned out great!)

The Grand Master of Librarians, very nice to seem him being done some sweet justice. Looking good so far, nice shading of blue going from mild tones rather then exterme black and white seems to only work on a few colours when it comes to shading...blue being one of them, for me anyway.
Looks really good and I am, for some reason drawn to the feet of the model...I do like them.

I just tried out your way of air-brush-pre-shading Rhinos, guess I went a bit dark though. Will brighten them up a notch today and see what I'll end up with. Thanks for that tutorial. Next step with the air-brush, troops :/
BTW, check out www.awesomepaintjob.com for video-tutorial for air-brushes.
Woo hoo... cookies!!!.... yum, yum, yum....
The rhino does look great. Thats a nice start on the librarian too. You're making me feel like a slacker for not updating my log but lately I've been working on a bunch of boring speed paint stuff that isnt too impressive so I havent been motivated to take pictures.

I love that blue... it's really vibrant. The combination of airbrush and traditional highlighting seems to be really effective. What colours did you use?
I've to say your style is really brilliant ... fantastic works![]()

I agree with you, blue is one of the colours that take the most benefit from a shading like the one I used. I'm not overly done as I've said earlier, but a lot of my works tend to appear better only at the very end, while being horrific while the paintjob is still WIP. I can always hope this will occur even with the librarian (over the ages this is the third time I try to approach the Ezekiel mini)
I knew that site, being an avid follower of their youtube video collection. It seems that the site will be down for some time though.
A big thanks to you for the scheme suggestion. I'm making someone feel a slacker for not updating his log? ME? Oh my God, the Mayas got that date wrong
Thanks mate. The recipe for the blue is:
- base with necron abyss
- airbrush the whole model with regal blue
- airbrushing from an angle of 45° from the above of the mini spray a coat of ultramarines blue
- same as the previous step, but adding VMC stonewall gray to the blue and spraying a lighter coat
- same as above, with more stonewall gray and an even lighter coat
- enrich shadows airbrushing some regal blue + chaos black where appropriate
- armour detailing with the same mix of regal blue + black , then used as a glaze to smoothen transitions
- first highlight with ultramarines + stonewall gray
- second highlight adding more stonewall gray
I'll probably add another highlight step when the model will be near completion and the lights will be more defined.
Thanks!
Then don't be lazy and post something of yours! You procrastinated for too long.
That's not the way to motivate him. He will have to earn his cookies.
Ok, I made some very little progress: the shadows on the vest are done, and they came out quite messy. The overall appearance may still get better with all the highlights, but I fear that I messed up too much a few places that will be hard to fix. Bah, at least I've learned something...
As usual WIP=more feedback needed so... well, you can guess.

Double post, seems that the old good Ezekiel didn't have that much success
I've put him on hold while I'm deciding if I like the paintjob so far or not: now I'm even more convinced that maybe that particular mini isn't made for me - I somewhat like it, but it seems that I can't paint him in a satisfying way (at least for me).
BTW, this time I wasn't lazy (something new for me) and started workin on some sternguards: I promised the guys at B&C a tutorial on how I paint my fists so you're getting the same treatment:
First step:: using the airbrush, pre-shade with tamiya red brown and lay down a basecoat spraying golden yellow.
Second step: this time I tried the sponge weathering technique for infantry minis, in an attempt to get a "standard painting procedure" to give me the best appearance /speed trade-off. I had to correct the weathering by brush in some spots, but I think it came out well. Also the leg and elbow joints got painted black

Third step: add some details: astronomican grey highlighted with white for the helmet and shoulder pads trims, astronomican grey washed with asurmen blue for the chest eagle. Using MIG excellent dark wash I do a pinwash to enhance general detail.
Fourth step: pigment weahtering, using the usual sequence of Dark mud->Old rust->Standard rust->Light rust->Black smoke. Bolter was painted in a 1 part charadon granite + 2 parts chaos black mix, purity seals and parchment with a flat base of Dheneb stone, red parts with dark flesh. Then I sealed the pigments with two very light passes of tamiya matt spray varnish.
Next steps will bring highlights and final detailing so stay tuned (if you like it so far).

Last part of the tutorial, and another finished mini (well, less the base):
Fifth step: after pigment weathering the mini lost a bit of definition. Using a bit more MIG dark wash I enhance again all recesses. Then I start with (some) shadows and highlights (pics first!)
- bolter casing is shaded with badab black and highlighted with charadon granite and then charadon + white
- purple checkers with hormagaunt purple + white
- brown parts are base with calthan brown, washed with a calthan brown + black mix, then the same mix + more black is used to give definition only in the most recessed parts. Highlights are made with calthan brown + vomit brown, then a second stage of highlights is carried out adding some more vomit brown in the mix.
- shoulder eagle with astronomican grey, then astronomican grey + white. At the end I make a very selective asurmen blue wash to sharpen the transition between the raised and recessed areas
- purity seals and parchment: base with dheneb stone, wash with gryphonne sepia and highlight with dheneb stone, then with dheneb + white. A final devlan mud wash only in the recesses and you'll be fine. The red parts are simply dark flesh highlighted with blood red.
- eyes with dark angels green, thraka green wash, then scaly green with a fine line of scorpion green and a skull white dot. Remember to give a light coat of gloss varnish to get the "glass" effect.
- gems are dark flesh, lower part with blood red, even lower part with blazing orange, white dot and gloss varnish coat.
- final yellow highlights with sunburst yellow, underlining every scratch on the armou. Try to use small dots instead of solid lines, it gives a better result (at least to me). White parts are higlighted with skull white, using the same method of the yellow ones.
The close-ups are somewhat unforgiving but I may assure you that from a slightly higher distance the paintjob gives the mini a very pleasant look. Not that I want to prove my point but...
Well, I hope you like the result and have enjoyed the tutorial... but I'd be even happier if this will help you in some way. Don't hesitate to ask if you have some question, or to give your two cents and move me a critic or two.
On a completely unrelated matter, I have the impression that the title of my log isn't so appealing in a section which is about 40k imperium and in which a fresh updated log stays on the first page maybe for 12 hours... I considered starting a new log focused only on imperial fists, as I have the impression that a mere title change would not lead to the added attention that I'm trying to get from the 40k community (this, and the fact that having worked on the fists in different moments they're spread across the log and make the consultation a bit difficult for a newcomer).
So, what do you think? Should I start a brand new, shiny log or should I keep this and just ask a mod to rename it?
