I've heard such good things about how Devlan mud wash makes things (anything!) look better.
So, does anyone have any examples of how they've used the wash and improved their painting because of it? Cheers! Jonik |

no pictures I'm afraid, but basically, it shades everything, and anything, other than maybe bright yellows, and blues (however, it shades Darksun ok, better still with a little sepia mixed in...
basically, its a little like dipping your models, or painting on a dip, but with a slightly different finish, and without the gloss, so for ultra- speedpainting you can simply basecoat, then wash, and it will be done. it goes particularly well over bone or cloth colours, metals, and reds.

Well my pictures aren't astonishing being the first ones I have done of my models but the below Skeletons were completly washed with devlan mud, the skeletons themselves are white with several devlan mud washes over the top, and the wood and greens are quite plain with just a wash over them, the metals got a little more treatment but not much.

As far as I could say... Devlan Mud is... amazing.
If you wash it on the face (or skintone) with help of Badab Black and Ogryn Flesh... you could do something like this. ![]() (don't bother that Thai fonts and e-mail... )The face is undercoated black and then given layers of Elf Flesh, Ogryn Flesh Wash and the layers of Devlan Mud to give more shade... and some Badab Black in some areas. After that I re-apply Elf Flesh on raised areas and that's it. Also... for metal areas it works well... It gives the effect not too black like Black Wash, simply like this Bolter... ![]() Just one important thing about the new wash -- it gives washed areas flat finished. That's my opinion on Devlan Mud for you... Hope it Helps, ZAlpha

love the look of it on the bolt gun metal there, kind of like a burnished dirty coloration to it. Kind of like the coloration you get from a muzzle flash. Would love to see those pics of the Macharius

Devlan Mud is my most used wash, I used to use a 50/50 mix of black/brown inks for my Iron Warriors and this stuff does it so much better, and with out the glossiness of inks. It works well over red too if you want a deep-dark red scheme.
I've ben using it on my Bloodletters. Mechrite red base (over black undercoat) a heavy wash of Devlan. Mechrite/blood red highlight, Baal Red was then applied and then another light Devlan wash. Lastly a light drybrush lightlight of the old Blood Angels red/orange. On bolters the black wash is simply excellent. Boltgun metal base coat, wash of black wash and voila! gives a great 'grainy' effect to the metalwork. More I use these washes the more and more I like them, no one else I've come across (Vallejo, Reaper Coat D'Arms etc...) has a product that comes near it. PhilB

Devlan Mud is probably the best brown wash I've ever used. I haven't experimented with alot of colors yet as I just got some of the new washes last week, but I'm finding it absolutely brilliant for bone. Scorched brown base, Bestial brown highlight, bleached bone highlight, wash with Devlan Mud and done. For my nurgle the dirty look it gives is perfect but if it was spacemarines or something similar you may want to re-highlight with BB.
You can see it's application on my DP.(on the knees)

2 coats over Chainmail and you've got a nice grimy colour for Ork gunz, its so useful, i've been doing layers of Devlan Mud, Gryphonne sepia and Badab black over Chainmail, then drybrushing it with chainmail for ork armour.

Some Necrons using the new washes. Left most Necron is Boltgun metal with badab black wash then a mithril silver drybrush. The middle Necron is Boltgun metal with the Delvan mud was and the same mithril silver drybrush. The right most Necron is a pre-wash mini with only a Boltgun basecoat.

It works realy well for shading green too as it gives a more natural shading lthan a Green Wash. You can see an example of a Gaunt i painted using Devlan Mud here:
