Default New Free Magazine

Hi all

Sheffield Irregulars have produced thier first magazine, which is free to download. There are plans to produce 4 a year, each wil contain RPG and wargaming articles, painting tutorials, artwork, reviews and anything else that may be of interest.

We are also looking for contributors for future editions, though because the magazine is free, we can't make any payments for articles or art work submitted.

The magazine can be downloaded at the following site;

Very nice! I especially liked the re(tro)view of HeroQuest, as we are into Warhammer Quest right now.

I probably won't contribute, as I already have far too many things going on right now, but wish you all the best of luck. Very nice first edition, and the front artwork is pretty flipping amazing!

Keep it up.

Overall I like it, the tutorials are nice, and the quality of the writing is good.

One of the articles bugged me a lot tough, and that is the imperial guard one. I get the feeling that the person who wrote it has not actually faced imps yet. They look really scary on paper, but in reality they are simply unpleasant. They are not part of the "big three of 40k" in terms of power, and overall their book is well balanced (with a few oddities, one of which the article did not even mention: Psyker squadrons).

I´ve just skimmed over the magazine, and it looks very neat from the first glance. I´ll be looking into the various painting/converting articles especially.

The IG codex review is the only article I have actually read through. Why do you publish something that is little more than an internet rant? A whinefest by someone who is envious of all those shiny toys a new army gets?
As AFnord said, the reviewer hasn´t played (against) the codex. He even doesn´t do much of a review, just pointing out the many, many overpowered units and rules in the codex

I guess that article was submitted rather early, just after the book was released. Now everyone knows that the IG are not the next overpowered army of doom, and that the orders play just a minor part.

That article alone lowers the standard of the entire magazine (if the rest is going to be good, which I hope ).

I also was a little disappointed that the IG rant got into the mag. Overall it was pretty good.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Not every article in the magazine will please everyone, but we hope that each issue will have a good balance of articles that appeal to most readers.

The reason for writing is that I'm looking for contributors for issue 2 and beyond. I'm looking for wargame and RPG articles for future releases, along with art work.

If anyone is interested get in touch with me at;

Nice mag, really well done.

I don't mind a rant when it's well done, and there's always the opportunity for a counterpoint in the next issue!

It looks fairly interesting, and having a general hobby magazine for pretty much all table top games seems like a very cool thing. I liked most of the articles and the short stories were cool, although the IG article was extremely disappointing and looks to have been written by someone with very little knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the previous IG codex (chem inhalers were really *that* good?) and what needed to be fixed. A couple good points were made, but at the risk of being offensive and using 4chan parlance, it did indeed sound very "butthurt" and illogically ranty with insufficient personal knowledge of the army to make a reasoned argument and did nothing to make people enthusiastic about playing the game and really took away from the feeling of the magazine as a whole. It really did just sound like "only *my* army should be able to do these things" without really taking in the whole picture or having the proper experience with the Imperial Guard. As both a Tau and an IG player, the article seemed to a dramatic over-reaction to me.

I'd either leave that author out next time or have the author leave the nerdrage at home. It's one thing to critique and argue, it's another to rant (leave that to personal discussions and seedy internet forums). The points could have been made without all the nerdrage and telling people not to play (which is, in my opinion, a huge error that should never have made it past the editors as it only takes away from the hobby you wish to promote).

Overall a very cool mag, but next time don't let what amounts to a 4chan rant post get in there.

I'll look forward to the next one!

Thanks for all the comments, and not to worry the ranting will not be in future issues.

For issue two we will have an article looking at Cave ecology for RPG's
Peasants Revolt 1381
More great painting articles
An article exploring the use of historical manuals as reference
winners of the short story comp
Gamesday UK review and no thnis won't be ranty, as its being written by someone who is like a kid in a sweet shop at GD.
A look back at Necromunda
Plus a range of other articles on gaming and painting.

Cool, looking forward to the next issue.

Also, just to clarify, it's ok I think to have articles critical of a product, just not quite in such an angry and ranty way. If an author feels there is legitimate criticism to be made about the powerlevel or feel of something, a magazine like this would be a great place to express it, just in a more reasonable and thought out manner. So don't avoid such things in the future if we have put you off that, just make sure they are a bit more well reasoned and articulated

Now this is something that I'm looking forward to! Will it be a "general Cave ecology" article, or will it be aimed at a specific genre?

As far as I know it will be a general Cave ecology, the author hasn't given me much details yet, though if its for a genre, then I suspect it will be fantasy, as he games more in fantasy settings than any other.

Sorry to thread-necro, but I'm just wondering what happened with the magazine. I submitted an article a while back but when I checked recently your website had vanished. I've been trying to get into contact with you guys for a while, to no avail. What's going on here?
