Default Dark Elves count-as

Just another attempt to try to motivate myself to get back into Fantasy.

I'm a big fan of the Alpha Legion in 40k. For those of you not in the know go to here: (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Alpha_Legion). Basically I've been trying to think on how to play a similar army in Fantasy. Not many armies have a focus on unconventional warfare and special forces, until I really started thinking about the Dark Elves.

Now here me out. They have plenty of dastardly and clever abilities to neutralize and destroy the enemy as well as a good internal balance afaik(external leaves a lot to be desired). Now that I have a base, I'm wondering which theme I would like to make.

First is a Grey/Shadow Wizard Empire/Merc army. Will focus more on magic and shooting that the other. Would use Crossbowmen as Mercs with converted Reaper bows being handled by Merc Orges similar to Leadbelchers. Dark Riders will be converted Pistoleers.

The second is the one I'm leaning on. It's based of a Chaos Cult that worships and is lead by a Daemon Prince named the Ouroburos. This theme would allow for much more units being taken (Cold Ones, Harpies, Hydras etc.). Army would have more a focus on high-mobility units with a combo of Shadow and Dark Elf magic.

Of the two, which do you think would look the best? Also if you have any conversion ideas for either please feel free to give advice.

I'd go Chaos Cult. That way you can scream "FOR CHAOS" at your opponent.

Honestly, I like them both.

Of the two, I'd say I like the Merc/Empire army more, but I've always liked Empire. May be hard to explain some of their stats and the like.

The Chaos Cult would be more useful if they ever come back and support the Cult of Slanesh list from the Storm of Chaos, but that's probably not going to happen.

I'd say the second is more doable, but go with whichever you like best.

Using Dark Elves as elite Human soldiers? Sound awfully similar to my Nippon idea... (If the DE models weren't so ******* pointy I'd certainly use the actual models, but as is I lean towards using asiatic black hebrew mini crossbows akimbo slanging Nippon warriors

How about actually using Dark Elves?

A shade heavy list with corsairs and assassins and witches could be cool. Sounds like a covert operation to me. Well equipped infantry with elite killers and adept skirmishers holding them down.

So just to make sure I understand the question, you want to use the dark elf army book, but you aren't sure what fluff you want to justify using human-esque models?

Chaos cult is always cool, but it's way overdone (although not in the way you're suggesting). I'd go for the mercs, just because it would allow you to be really creative.

I personally prefer the merc idea; it is more original, and offers you a more interesting range of potential models imho, and fit the idea of 'special forces' better. Like said, Chaos cults is a rather common theme, the merc idea less so.

But in the end you have to play the army, so it is your decision alone

chaos has been done multiple times, although it is cool i think the conversion for the merc army would be intresting to see. dont know how fluff wise you would explain the better stats though because those soilders would be pretty elite for just humans.
