Default Re: Wolfwing - Wolf Guard in TDA with Logan Grimnar

I'm trying to get my wolfwing from 1500 to 1850 and am now faced with a fork in the road. The basic question is would two rune priest be better than two dreadnaughts.

Right now the list looks like this

Logan

5 wolf guard termies
Ajac
ss/wc
wc/wc
fb/sb
hf/cf

5 wolf guard termies
ss/wc
pf/ac
pf/sb X 3

5 wolf guard termies
ss/wc
pf/ac
pf/sb X 3

It comes in at 1155.

The idea would be to put Logan with the close combat squad and throw them in a land raider redeemer or crusader. Then take 2 razorbacks with lascannons. That leaves about 300 pts for either something else. And I was leaning towards either rune priests or dreadnaughts.

The rune priests would be in TDA with choser of the slain both would have murderous hurricane and one would have JoWW and the other living lightning.

Whereas the dreads would have twin-linked lascannons and either missile launchers or autocannons.

If you want to bring dreads, 2 is the way to go. IMO, if you are bringing 1 LR already, I would find the points to bring a second instead!

This is simply not true... I change my list constantly
1) i have lots of models.
2) makes for a different game each time.

I agree otherwise, its just that I do it for fun

It is very easy to make a list capable of dealing with a lot of 2+ saves (and it's not like ~20 models is a lot) that is also capable of taking on other lists. Marines still have the most players, and TH&SS terminators are one of the best units in the codex. Plague Marines and FNP Nobs (and probably the Death Company when C:BA comes out), and Tyranid MCs are good targets for plasma, as well. The weapon can also kill regular marines and transports.

Hell, a decent tournament list should always come prepared to deal with 2+ AV14 vehicles and some 2+ saves.

Is there any point in using GH or LF in a Logan army? There supposed to be good units but im wondering if straight terminators would actually be better. Or is a mix viable?

both versions are completely viable. I have heard alot of people talking about tossing grimnar with LF's to get relentless, i already gave my thoughts on this earlier so i won't here but if your like me, you like lots of terms, tanks, and maybe something gimmicky like thunderwolves or scouts to round out your force. I think the GH's are less of a boon to the army as terms would be better when it comes to shooting and CC.

I haven't found a use for Grey Hunters in my list as Wolf Guard (without TDA) do what they can do and be more efficient as well. 3 Wolf Guard with combi-meltas in a rhino is a solid mobile objective claimer and is a very cheap alternative to Grey Hunters. Taking units of 3 Wolf Guard is also a cheap way of getting razorbacks involved in your list, which is a great thing in my opinion.

But you can already take razorbacks with getting regular wolfguard.

But they don't Score without Logan...which is half the point of this Thread...the other half being putting them in TDA. As well, you can take Razorbacks *regardless* of how many Wolf Guard, or how they're equipped...they just can't get in it unless they are in Power Armour and there are six or less of them.

So basically Longfangs and PA WG are good but no GH? I guess that works since we already have all those troops anyway. Mainly I wanted to focus on the Termies but try to be different than DW.Also I wont be putting Logan with LF thats a waste of his CC power IMO.

well unfortunatly now that DW have no restrictions on army make up as there used to be(even though there are purists like myself that still only run LR's, terms, and dreads), so you can't really make something completely different as really the only completely different unit in the books are thunderwolves, but i think the way the army plays will be unique enough. Wolfwing is more flexible than DW which is nice as you can shoot and be very good in CC if you equip your terms with the right loadouts which there are a few good threads about WG loadouts around. If y ou want to be a bit different maybe a small squad of thunderwolves or 2 that can run ahead of the pack and tie up units so your terms can roll up in their LR's and finsih off whats left.

you have the right idea about logan with LF's. its a total waste of his true abilities. I know it may seem sweet to be able to move and fire with your LF's but your terms can do that and have just as effective firepower, if not more so, and your 275 pt CC beast slogs up the field and may never even see CC. Its a sin for him not to get to slaughter the enemy in CC. I personally don't bother with LF's, i'd rather run vindi's/LR's in my heavy support slots but thats me

I honestly don't think adding in power armored WG in with the all terminator WG will be any more effective than just running all terms, but it is an option.

How useful would a tda wolfguard with ss/sb + mark of the wulfen be?

Are storm shields worth it?

How does this look for a typical unit load out.
pf/ac
ss/wc
ss/sb +mark of wulfen
pf/sb
cf/sb

It comes out to around 280 pts, is it worth it? How does it look for an all rounder squad?

thats setup is too costly and some redundancies. SS are good to soak up those ap1/2 shots but there is no need to take more than 1 SS per squad, and imo, the 1 chain fist will do for tanks and MC's. single WC's are by far the best buy in the book. You keep your SB, AND you get a LC that you get to choose whether you re-roll the hits or wounds!! thats very nice.

something more like this set up is most efficient and best for wound allocation:

CF/SB
WC/SB(many will run a combi-weapon here for better wound allocation)
WC/SB
PW/AC or CML or HF
PW/SS

some people like to run combi weapons here and there but i am a fan of keeping your squads as cheap as possible(plus i have bad luck when using combi-weapons). 280 pts for a squad of terms is way too much to be spending when your going to have 3, 4, or 5 of them in your army. My setup without the combi-weapons with AC/CML is only 235 pts and with a heavy flamer its only 210 pts. sometimes i don't even run SS in my squads,
generally i just run them in my footslogging squads and not the ones that ride in LR's but again i am of the philosophy quantity over quality. I have been footslogging my DW army for 12 years now without any LC's or TH/SS and I rarely lose so I am still play testing the use of SS's vs their point cost army wide.

Look at my Logan army, its 1.500:

HQ:
Logan Grimnar 275........275

Troops:
7 WG+7TDA+1SS+1CF+HeavyFlammer+2CombiMelta 276
7 WG+7TDA+1SS+1CF+HeavyFlammer+2Combimelta 276........552

Elite:
Lone Wolf+TDA+WC 50
Lone Wolf+TDA+WC 50
Lone Wolf+TDA+WC 50........150

Heavy Support:
1LandRaiderCrusader+MM 260
1LandRaiderCrusader+MM 260........520
.........1.497

Deploy main plan:

I LRC+Logan Grimnar+7 WG
II LRC+7 WG
III LoneWolfs

Basic strategy of the army:
The army have only 5 units so for Objetives missions you have to get the best
adventage from lone wolfs for denying objetives, also LRC make the same work
Having only 2 scoring units mean they MUST survive and enemy units shouldnt
get any.

On the other hand 3rd mission is a walk in the park as you only have 5 points
to give and they are higly armored points.

This army requires very good skills to be played but its nice for tournaments.

That looks to be a fun list. Two hard as nails squads and three wild cards. Not overly competitive but should be a kick for when you don't feel like moving much around the board.

Most competitive? Got me What I'm looking at in your list is that the fact that you only have two scoring units. That will make it very difficult in a more than half of your games to pull a win. Land Raiders are tough but people are catching on to this and melta is popping up all over the place.

I'm planning on using a variation on my Deathwing list. Thee squads of 5 termies, Logan, a Rune Priest and two Crusaders. Is it really different than yours? Not much. I find the Rune Priest give you tactical flexibility and the extra squad it nice. Plus, I have three Assault Cannons and that's not all bad.

Is anyone using thunderwolves. I was thinking of a footslogging army using them. Theres also iron priests on thunderwolves with cyberwolves. I heard they synergize well with wolf wing.

I posted this in another thread but I have been toying around with this foot sloggers combo...

Logan lead
3 Unit sizes 10...
1-Terminator/SB/SS
2-Terminator/SB/WC
3-Terminator/SB/PS/Cyclone
4-Terminator/SB/PS
5-Terminator/SB/CF
6-Power armor STD
7-Power armor/combi weapon
8-Power armor/SB
9-Power armor/Melta bombs
10-Terminator/SB/PS/Assault cannon

Is this decent wound allocation and take all comers style?
What do you guys think about mixed armor?

leaves some points for lone wolves/thunder/poding grey hunters with banner/whatever tickles...

blameless,

Wound allocation works best if you have two wound figures but you hit the nail on the head for ultimate wound allocation madness

Now, as someone who made a Biker Nob list (before it was cool I at least started it) and took a Deffwing Ork army (2 big mobz of 9 Mega Armoured Ork Nobz) to the last big tournament I attended I will say that wound allocation really ticks me off. I hate the time it takes me to figure out which figure I want a chance to die, which one already has a wound and which ones are in groups. Here's hoping that this goes the way of the Dodo next edition.
