Default Official Firebase Issue 7 (July 2008) Feedback Thread

Its time for yet another Firebase Feedback thread, this time for the Firebase issue 7 (July 2008)

I would like to make a couple of other requests. If you post the score you have given to the current Firebase on the thread, would you please explain why especially if you have voted 1 or 10. I think this is useful (and interesting) for other WarSeer members reading the thread, it also provides useful feedback for others who read the thread which may include Firebase Staffers.

The other request is related to the previous one. Do not criticise people for posting their score and views about Firebase, I believe we are all entitled to voice our opinions without the the fear of them being criticised.

As always, all off-topic posts and spam will be deleted without notice.

I gave it a one rating because I was miffed (still am to a certain extent) that they did not include my name with the article I wrote. After reading through it I am a little embarrassed with the rating I gave it. It deserves a nine at least and reminds me of the reasons that I used too read White Dwarf. Congratulations to all the staff, you folks did a great job.

Thank you Elijah Hampton, I really appreciate that post, and I feel terrible about omitting your name and hope you will consider contributing content again in the future. Your Stalk Tank and rules are nothing short of excellent.

My name was not listed in the second issue as a proofreader, hehe, so I understand completely how you are a bit disappointed about not being mentioned.

I quite enjoyed it. Very good as always. (I'm still perusing the Epic: Raiders supplement, but it looks very, very good so far.) 9.

7... slightly less than previous months due to the lack of a painting article.

Highlights were the scratch-built orca guide, and the dark heresy interview.

Specialist games section was top-notch, well-written and I'm still enjoying the "introduction to epic" articles.. it was good to read about the history of the game.

Didn't realise that it only costs £12 to start playing epic with a basic army, tempted to give it a go... was initially put off of the Armageddon re-release by the cost of some of the metals.

Aye, the Dark Heresy interview was good, especially since I now know what book is coming out after Disciples. I've not rated the issue yet since I need to read the junglefight stuff, and I think my name was put on my article. If not, it's in my email address which is definitely in the article, so meh.

Firebase is very consistent.

Some Highlights:
  • Pages and pages of incredibly poorly painted miniatures. My eyes, my eyes! It burns!
  • Anime style illustrations that are not in character with the game background.
  • Plenty of "hobby content" that has been covered countless times in other venues with far better results (That cities of death style hobby article was just awful. It was similar to the web content when the 1st Cityfight book was released, only it looked much, much worse.)

Thanks for the comments. I am not going to defend the miniature painting quality because I don't think it needs defending - many people play with unpainted or partly painted minis, many people have differing skill levels and this is a mag for gamers by gamers. Sometimes it's nice to see that not everyone is playing the game the way they do in WD! Would be nice if we could, but...

As for the artwork, if there is anyone whose art you would like to see in the mag, let us know. I think what we have is good, but I'd love to see more and different art in there.

What was "awful" about the Cities of Death article? Rather than just pan it, why not tell us what was wrong and how you would fix it?

Remember, if you think Firebase is consistently bad, the only way you will see it get better is through feedback we can use.

Regards,

Sholto

Your name was not listed, but your email and member name for Warseer is listed. By the way, Ross Watson told me he enjoyed your Daemonhosts article.

I'd like to see less of this 40k-anime art. It just bugs me.

Good, but not as good as the last one IMO. I just couldn't relate to much of the content.

The jungle rules didnt hold much interest, and took a large amount of space. The models at the beginning were just snapshots of works in progress, I'd much rather see two or three good miniatures and how they were converted into a the fully completed product. The anime style art and the four horsemen bit just isn't to my taste.

However, I did enjoy reading the battle report and the fuff leading up to and after the battle. I also found the specialist games section really interesting. And it is still the best 40k mag out there, so I voted 8.

I was just expecting it to be ..... better. Maybe I just got a little over excited.

Currently, not a clue who Ross Watson is, but I am drunk as a skunk right now. I'm glad someone liked it, as it was more work than the 'stealer one.

P.S: Wait, Ross Watson as in the guy that is now the lead designer? Awesome. Ross, if you're reading this, any jobs going?

Thanks for the positive comments about the Specialist Games section guys.

I took a bit of a risk in making this issue mostly Epic-focused in honour of Epic:Raiders' release and I'm glad that the issue is being well-recieved!

I've opened a SG Section-specific feedback thread in the SG sub-fourm, and would appreciate it if you dropped by to leave your thoughts.

I gave it a nine. The highlight was the Misfire Comic on page 113. To me it is doubly funny because "pudding cup" is a slang term in prison for one's anus.

also like to echo C+Es thanks for any SG loving. Sad to say we didn't get masses of articles, so we had to write a fair few bits ourselves... hope you all enjoyed.

Well done to the main section guys... its quite fun having the split mag atm, we still get the excitement of seeing half an issue on release day!

Please please get onboard and help us address the issues with the mag. As everyone involved says, its all about what you contribute.

Cheers all (criticism is all good too, makes us work all the harder, as long as its constructive. )

I think that the art is great so I'd ignore the people branding it unfit to be used in a 40k fanzine. Some nice articles. Gets an 8

Could have done with a few bfg articles though.

-1 for some of the pictures not being great (either the painting of the figs or the quality of the pictures). Not really a big complaint there but obviously it would be better if this was improved. Still, mediocre pictures are better than none.

-1 simply because most of the stuff didn't grab me as it wasn't about areas I'm not really interested in. That's just bad luck I guess.

Highlights:

EPIC! Great to see Epic get some lovin', anything that encourages others to take the game up is good by me. The Raiders supplement is excellent.

Stories: The Warhound Titan story and the one accompanying the Jungle Fight were very enjoyable. The former was just a really good story, the latter was good for being pretty short - a lot of the stories in FB can be a bit long and sometimes it's nice to find one you can read when just flicking through.

Did I mention Epic? Hooray for Epic!

Where was the homemade codex mentioned in the introduction?

EDIT: Ah. I got the impression you meant a codex for an army. The junglefighting rules do look pretty good.
