As nice as it looks (and it does look nice), from that extensive preview, it pretty much looks like Forge World just made their own version of Mig Jimenez's "F.A.Q.: Frequently Asked Questions on the AFV Painting Techniques", which is pretty much the current bible for military modelers.

You can buy it here: http://www.amazon.ca/F-Q-Frequently-.../dp/849652762X

I'm liking what I see, just wait for a price before making my decision.

While knowing that i'll never paint all that well any help might be good and if might be faster which is always a bonus

That looks like a most useful book.

@Little lead men: that's hard to get, I see. And pretty expensive, too. I guess that the FW book will be my choice then.

I'm interested in the use of pencils (seems for use in highlighting/crevasse work).

Again, I haven't read the entire book, but all of the techniques shown in that 34 page preview are also covered already in John Prigent's Armour Modelling book published by Osprey, as well.

You can get that one here: John Prigent Osprey Book

I'm not down on FW for making this book, but I often notice that a lot of wargamers (at least the ones I run into here in NYC) don't have any sense of the vast world of military modeling, where these techniques are not new.

I'll definately get it and add it to my library, but I highly suggest that gamers check out and buy the other titles listed. They are great resources for hobbiests.

Emailed FW a couple of weeks back about the book, Simon Kirkham sent me an email back saying that they hope to have some for GDUK, don't have a set price but estimate £25-£30.
Looking forward to it myself.

The same guy basically told me the same thing at Games Day LA..
Here's hoping that it gets released by then.

I might order this for my brother's birthday. He's got a couple of 40K vehicles he seems scared to touch. Perhaps I can encourage him into doing some painting if he feels confident in his techniques.

thanks for the pics ALF.

IIRC, the book features an Imperial tank, an Imperial tank, an Imperial tank and an Imperial tank as example models, to show off the full range of 40k models

On the other hand, many military modelling books use oil paints which take very long to dry and are therefore not easy to use (and use toxic thinners).

Just read your post over my partner's shoulder and logged in to let you know. Pencils are used to show wear and tear on steps, hatch edges etc. The graphite is metallic silver when applied, so it looks like the paint has worn through to show the metal underneath. If you're insane on detail you can give it a red or white primer rim, to show the primer coat beneath the vehicles main colour, but usually just a bit of pencil looks great.

Hope that helps! I can recommend both FAQ and the Osprey book mentionned on the thread.

that's some pretty nice stuff. What strikes me as odd (since FW is controlled by GW) it that they use a real airbrush and not the handflamer, which GW sells. Don't get me wrong, I like it (this way it's actually useful) but I thought GW wouldn't allow for it.

The main benefit of this book over many others is that it uses the paints that most of us use on a daily basis. I am sure the other books are great but I think this one will be more accessible for gamers wanting to make more realistic looking tanks.

How much is this book btw?

I don't think you could do a lot of the sort of stuff they show in the FW book using the GW airbrush, as they seem to be doing fine detail work with it and the GW airbrush is designed for covering large areas. Also, don't think GW are actually selling the airbrush yet are they?

As for the book, looks interesting and an almost definite purchase for me, even though it's bound to make me want to replace all my tanks and paint new ones. Only worry is that they make it too repetitive, showing basically the same techniques on 4 different tanks or something, but hopeful it will be designed in such a way that they don't repeat the same stuff too much.

Also, did I hear correctly that one of the models covered was meant to be the Reaver? Can anyone confirm that?
