Hi guy I'm new to the forum so let me first show you want I can do. I've got 2 armies completed at the moment one of which has won best army at Open War but for now I'll show you my 2nd project...
The Darkmakers! ![]() Background The last 4 of a once loyal chapter of marines called ‘The Light Bearers’ with the power to heal any wound, now a group of powerful immortal chaos champions who have the power to animate the dead led by the Deamon Prince Sharazad: Keeper Of The Dead they lay siege to the Imperium with an army of fallen Ultramarines. HQ & ELITES ![]() Sharazad I came up with many concepts for Sharazad originally he was a chaos lord riding a wave of skeletons (Original Model) I was tempted for a time to have the soul grinder deamon riding this wave. But in the end I choose to use the Bela’kor model, combined with the Inquisitor scale robes and skeleton shield he looks the part for a leader of a necromantic chaos army. Rokhan & Terminators Considering I was using Death Guard rules I had to have a unit of toughness 5 terminators. Using some of terminators from my old space marine army and with a bit of drilling and scratching I was able to create the look I wanted. I wanted all of the Darkmakers to have their own unique look compared to each other, ‘the Juggernaut’ from the Xmen comics was the inspiration for Rokhan’s appearance I wanted him to look like he could run through a squad of marines without a problem. He is my favourite Darkmaker out the 4. TROOPS ![]() Korell & the Undead Sprits Korell was the first Darkmaker I made at a ‘Space Marine Conversion Day’ at my local GW that was where the idea for undead marines started, I went for the all wise and mysterious look for him. The Sprits were a late edition to the army after the new chaos codex came out and I saw that the thousand sons had a AP3 gun and a 4+ invulnerable I couldn’t stop thinking about a unit of Undead sprits. I made them look pre-heresy with a combo of Black Templar and Dark Angel bits to make them look ancient; painting them was a long and tiresome process. Space Marine player love them. Lol The Darkmakers Sindri: I love Japanese warriors so I wanted to go with a samurai look for one of my Darkmakers which was easy with marauder, dark angel and several other bits. Zaceria: Originally the model for my Deamon Prince I changed him into a Raptor champion and gave him a classic chaos jumpback, but after a few games my very expensive 300pt raptors was giving very little back so I ripped off their jumpbacks and split my 2 squads of 10 zombies into 3 squads of 8. They’re much better this way plus his original cloak was timeconsuming to create. Rokhan: My terminators are for 2000pt games but he is too good not to feature in 1500pt games so I use him as a champion with a Powerfist. The Ultrazombies Like I’ve already mentioned the project started at a Games Workshop Space Marine conversion day where I converted a squad of undead marines in the time it took two lots of people to make their squads, neverless I won the best squad award. This is the only army when I’ve spend more time converting then painting but the battle damage was worth it as it has given them a interesting look. In games I use them as Death Guard as their ‘feel no pain’ rule and slow speed make them perfect for representing my zombies. I choose Ultramarines because most people dislike that chapter in general since I started playing 2 months ago I’ve had people praise me for making an undead Ultramarine army or as a young kid called them ‘Ultrazombies’. I call games against Ultramarine players ‘A Recruitment Drive’ mission. THE VEHICLES Now when it came to converting the vehicles I wasn’t sure what to do with them should they be chaos and belong to the Darkmaker or be looted loyal tanks? In the end I choose to keep them looking loyal adding battle damage and scars but not too much to the point where they just won’t work, therefore my army would be able to stroll into an imperial city posing as a defeated Ultramarine force before giving the population a surprise attack! The more powerful the tank the less real damage for example the Land Raider has only a few scrapes and wasn’t really destroyed by as you can see someone got in through the top hatch and killed the crew. My favourite is the Rhino where I modeled the exploded passenger compartment; you can see the hole where the shell went through on the side. ![]() The army can hold it's own against most armies and I'm currently working on a Chaos Dread tag team for a tournament in april. I also plan to do a comic to explain their background. So what do you think? |

it's a good concept but i hope you won't have one of the darkmakers leading every squad cause that would be an extremely boring army
the most serious problem (you should know I hate myself for saying this) is that every marine need to have enough damage for being killed and for marines that is a LOT, in the case of the termies you could just put a little hole in the head because I don't think they have taken enough damage. ok, now you can hit me

Some really nice work there however I have to agree with k_c_e_l, it would take allot to kill a marine, however what about say.... they were a fleet of Ultramarines that were lost in warp transit, now undead and have come back to serve under chaos?? just an idea for you anyway. consider me subscibed for this

Yeah, it takes a lot of damage to kill a marine, but not THAT much. 1 good shot from anything but maybe a slingshot can kill a marine; autocannons, big shootas, stubbers, bolters, heavy bolters, even auto/lasguns can kill marines. So please give the guy a break. I think this is an excellent army, and I especially like the "ghost" marines. In the end I think you have given just enough battle damage to make the marines good and dead, but still able to be reanimated.

There is some good stuff in here.
I really like the concept, and the execution is fantastic. Could we see close-ups of some of the individual models? |

I love the fluff. I think you should work more of the necromantic 'magic' into the appearances of the miniatures themselves. At the moment, other than the presence of each necromancer aka darkmakers, the marines just look like dead marines.
I know that sound stupid (undead armies = dead people) but it doesn't really FEEL like an undead army from the 40k universe. That's my major gripe. There's no sense of Nurgle or Tzeentch's magic at play. Not that the marines should be covered in puss or feathers depending on which deity they pray to. Someone mentioned earlier that it'd take major damage for marines to be 'dead'. I don't think that's entirely true. In fact, marines are pretty hard in some fluff; however in some fluff the magical elements are far harder. They can corrupt the mind and the body - and when an injured marine (not necessarily a dead marine) becomes influenced by Chaos, I think it's fair enough to say that there can be zombie marines. In that view I think the marines should not just be 'skellies in power armour' - al beit its legitimate and comical aesthetics. I donno, maybe I'm just babbling. I lost track of what I was talking about lol. Sorry. sj |

Wow, they look really cool, especially the ghost marines, that paintjob looks amazing. Very seamless, and looks like they're actually glowing.
One criticism. It's similar to what others have pointed out, maybe someone's already raised this and I missed it, but... ![]() Sorry, just me nitpicking. Wouldn't it be simple enough to just say they're Chaos Sorcerers involved in necromancy? |

'Although they're chapter could heal any wound their geneseed was unstable causing cellular breakdown within their bodies to the point when they became forced to rely on their healing ablities to stay alive. They tried to look for a cure but where forced into conflict everywhere they went and after they began using their powers to raise the dead the Imperium began hunting them down till they're were only a hand full left. The last of the chapter ventured into the eye of terror to find death and glory in a battle against chaos, but something in the warp changed them and enhanced their powers to the point that their bodies would heal them back to full strength even after they had been killed. They had become immortal and in doing so they were denied the warrior's death they sought, as time passed they grew frustrated and tried of the neverending and pointless battle. Evenually they turned to chaos with the aid of the deamon Sharazad.' I'm currently working on a comic explaining their history so when it's finished I'll upload it on this thread. |

Very cool! I have always loved the idea of an Undead 40k army. (It's what I'm working on at the moment after all.)
I think the first dark maker looks really, really awesome. But i think he reminds me more of Dr Doom than Juggernaut. Which is cool because Dr Doom is totally evil and beyond awesome. This is a really cool army I'd love to see an Undead Dread! I usually HATE Space Marine; armies but this one is great! Keep it up! And I can't wait to see the comic. |

Superb really good, fluff is nice and original and the conversions and painting are spot on. The spirit squad is my personal fave. One thing why only UM, I'm guessing its to keep the army colour consisten but it just seems a bit funny that they are all ultra's.
Anyway more pics please lets see a wip of those dreads Rob |
