View Full Version : How to beat the back to uni early blues

04-09-2007, 15:05
Well, since I appear to be going back to uni a month before most people and a week later I'm going on a 6 week placement I figured I best do something with my spare time that'll stop me going insane from stress of a dissertation. So I thought I'd pull apart my existing army and redo them

Well first up for the chop are the command squad. Here's how they used to look...

And here's how they look now...not sure why the camara focussed on the wires in the background though...

Ok, so, first question of the new thread involves highlights and shades. Now I've decided to use shadow grey to highlight blacks and shade the codex grey. But do I use Fortress grey or space wolf grey to highlight the codex grey, and do I use ice blue or space wolf grey to shade the whites?

[blind leading blind]
well, please don't use shadow grey to highlight black! it's too blue, and on a simplistic level doesn't tie in with the other grey series. it breaks down like this
codex grey
fortress grey

shadow grey
space wolves grey

shadow grey and codex grey aren't exactly in the same series, as shadow grey looks very blue.
i'm sure i've used them together at some point, but certainly not to highlight black :D

my black method is
black (what really, cos i might have got that bit wrong...)
black/codex (50:50)
codex/fortress (50:50)
wash of thinned black, tie it all up. i'm sick of black not looking good so i decided to throw convention out of the window and highlight black so it's kids would feel it.

Ah! Already tried the shadow grey route. Will show you how it looks at some point. It's not too bad honest! Only thing is the "test" marine's left arm and fin broke off for some reason :wtf: so need to stick them on and repaint the area that flaked with it.

Well here's the first newly updated marine! For some reason I was able to get a good picture of the front, but not of the back. I will work on this.

Not sure if you can see the highlights on the black SC but do they still look bad?

Edit: The shiney bit's superglue where his fin was stuck on again. Didn't realise it would show up quite like that...

In the new WD has a very nice technique about how they highlighted the new chaos space marines minis starting with black and fortress grey, adding codex grey in the mix, then adding white and finally with white for the edges. I can't recall though the dosage, so if you have it you might want to take a look. It also has a very good tutorial on how they painted Huron Blackheart.

Ok, so little update, the vet sarge and other marine are progressing nicely. just need to tidy their new robes. The apothcary now has ice blue legs, to get a better white (I hope) and the champion is almost finished. Have decided to go for purple tabards as they're more ecclesiastical. Pics this weekend!

13-09-2007, 19:34
Well, to start, here be the champion...
Also, can people suggest a good, easy to paint knighty symbol? Ta!

17-09-2007, 22:39
Ok, the command squad is as good as finished. Issues with white and it's lack of staying power/pigment mean the apothcary won't be finished till I get a new pot.

So what to do next? The dev squad, assault squad (plus 5 guys), or make the tac sqaud presentable. Some answers and C&C would be nice!

Some fluff:

Instead of being in set squads, each marine belongs to a different knightly order or house. Therefore Tactical marines belong to either the order of Santiago or Sanjuan, assault marines the Eagle warriors (Jetpacks) or order of the wolf (Bikes.speeders), Devastator marines the order of the iron fist (Anti tank) and the Angelicus Mortis (Anti personnel) and the secretive order of the silent hunter.

Each have their own symbol, but retain the same grey basic scheme. Those members that have been seconded to the Deathwatch are allowed to keep the ornate shoulder pad as a sign of respect for their service.

Members of the orders if santiago and sanjuan are named after the first two chapter masters with their symbols being a sword and maltese cross respectively, the eagle warriors and order of the wolf are named after the tribes from which the majority of their members come from, with obvious symbols for each one. The Orders of the iron fists, the Angelicus Mortis and the order of the silent hunter are named after the way the carry out their plans.

The chapter has 12 companies the 2nd to 5th operate along a crusade line with squads rotating out as losses become too high and troops are replaced with fresh faces from the 6th to 11th. Each of the reserve companies are made up of marines from one order with the 12th being made up of scouts. The order of the silent hunter are nominally attached to the 1st company, though individual members are often spread thoughout the chapter where needed and as directed by the chapter master.

Armour is codex grey, with the shoulder trim and a central stripe on the helmet indicating the company colour. Veterans have twin tone helmets, "lower" part is grey, "upper" part is the company colour though Terminators have light blue helmets. Veterans that have tabards or robes will also have them in company colours, other than those attached to the chaplain, librarian or captain command squads. These are purple, deep blue and green respectively.

Hate to do what appears to be bumping, but since no-one who reads this seems to post anything....

Have found a trnasfer I can use as a chapter symbol. problem is the pain in the ass shape of shoulder pads, any ideas guys?

try to use a piece of whit paper as a background with hlf on the table and the other half rested on the wall or propped up in a curved fashion, that way your camera wont auto focus on the background, hard to see them clearly to give real comments but they look cool

Finally managed to sort the cam out (I think) So picturey goodness!

The veteran sergeant. Member of the order of Santiago

The command squad in all it's glory

Start of the Devastators

Whilst I know these ain't amazing, I think this is down to having a 5 year old camara which doesn't have the worlds best definition, rather than my skills as a painter (I hope).

Something a little different

Thought there was a 5 pic limit

Yet more progress!
Four outta 10 devastators done, two Heavy bolters and 4 bolters to go with this squad. And the command medic also...

Fluff time!

The history of the Knights of the Emperor begins during the third founding. One of two chapters with whom attempts were made to use the stable genestock of the Ultramarines and their descendents to stabilise others who had acquired...interesting tendencies. Within the Knights, Ultramarine, Imperial Fist, Space wolf and Raven Guard geneseed were all used and initially the project was declared a success.

However as time continued disaster struck as the various organs from the different geneseeds started to reject each other. Although there had always been an element of rejection in initiates, the percentage was considered so small as to be neglegible. When widespread rejection began to occur in fully developed marines the very future of the chapter was threatened.

Chapter Master Santiago immediatly ordered that all gene mixing should cease and new initiates should only receive organs from the same geneseed type and that current members of the chapter should undergo attempted transplants once signs of rejection had started. Those worst affected were marines where the Space wolf and Raven guard geneseed had been mixed with other types. With the ranks of his chapter decimated Santiago withdrew the chapter from the front line service for all but the greatest needs, giving the chapter time to recruit new members and do what they could for those who had already been afflicted with this terrible legacy.

Fully 50 years passed before the chapter regained sufficient strength to be declared operational again, and many hailed Santiago for his actions in saving the chapter, some even giving him the title Santiago el Salvador. Such acclamation, though not encouraged by the humble master, would raise the ire of the ecclesiasty, who claimed that only the Emperor could claim such a title. However, feelings at the time were with the chapter and any mutterings were made in quiet.

On the painting front, another heavy bolter is done, the legs of two meatshields are almost done, and a shedload of new minis have arived/are on the way. Oh, and I've also been basecoating bitz for my box in preparation.

09-10-2007, 00:39
By the way geneseed mixing is a huge no no especially with the space wolves. I like your models though and your highlighting looks great.

09-10-2007, 17:57
Ah you see, this is one of the reasons they know not to do it ;)

11-10-2007, 17:42
Slight update, Two more bolter toting marines are working their way to completion. Hopefully by the weekend. I have also received the Emperors taoln recon group Most of which will be used as such except for one lucky winner who's going to be replaced with an old old old skool RT Setinel, Yes the Egg is back! That lucky piece of plastic remaining will gain a slight make-over, gaining a heavy flamer, comms unit and a laser designater Why you ask? Well just a little something I've been think about for apoc including this sentinel, several mortars/thudd guns/something appropriate and the pie plates of doom! If of course people don't think this is likely to be any good then please say.
