Wow! I love that gritty and dirty look! ... and the melting Marine...
These are very, very sweet.
I like the walking turret especially. TBH, in GS and plasticard I wasn't sure it would work, but painted and all it's an awesome job.
/envy on
I must confess, I really didn't like the walking turret when I saw it all converted up, but painted it looks great! Well done.
This is a great log, those big walkers have inspired me to things I shall not yet disclose!

I have to agree with Fleafa on the Vindiwalker didn't like it at all before it was painted, but now it looks reeks of pure awsomeness. Like the rest of your works. Even the old, ***** dread looks awesome.

The silver is an undercoat of a dulux silver. Gloss paint as an undercoat is hard to work with. I made it work but now it's getting hard in spots. I'll have to rethink it for future projects...
Here are the pics of the vindiwalker, and yep; I dont' update for ages and then you get two in two days! Amazin'!!!
The jobs rougher on this one, for two reasons:
1. The paint was badly misbehaving
2. After getting near the end I realised it suited it anyways - who in their right mind is gonna go near a daemonically possessed vehicle to try and fix or wash it anyways...unless it's dead or disabled.

ANYHOO! Back to reality - I've decided I hate working on this defiler and the sooner it's finished the better. SO! That means that the job has been finished, no questions asked coz I couldn't be AR$ED to do any more conversion work on it. This will do I think. So happy or not, this is what it is! I tried adding chains but I couldn't do anything I was happy with , so it's another chainless beast. But it is very spikey. Very spikey and trophied (not atrophied) is good.
I figured the head wouldn't be too bad on this one, and I do like how it works, although I WILL have to name it Conan the Destroyer (Destroyer for short) given it's massive pinhead look.

And a family shot of Conan with Ripley:

Don't they make a lovely couple?
The final fitout of this one is Defiler cannon, Twin linked Lascannons and Havoc Launcher. For those hankerin for a shoulder mounted gun, there it is! For those yearning for a chest mounted weapon, there be ye lasers!
I just found this thead, and I am simply amazed by this thing, please tell me how to make one, and Ill be forever in your debt.

Just a quick one to let you all know I am still on this project, it's just on temporary hold. We've experienced some fairly significant flooding in our area, many people are out of home and unable to get to work or even out of town atm. So it's all temporarily on hold until things get back to normal.

Everythings dry, we missed the water (just). It lapped up onto our porch and stopped - thank GOD for that! I'll be back on the wagon on Tuesday at this rate. A full army shot is on its way, but not till the lot is done. Which isn't that far off!

D35t0y3r - that's great to hear about you guys. Hopefully Rocky doesn't get smashed by it. Our's has only really been receding since wednesday, and they only let light vehicles across the bridge yesterday at lunch time. We're all getting into cleanup. I bet there were some panicked people last night coz we got a thunderstorm...
Conan has had the undercoat stage begun. Hopefully I'll get some more paint on that later this week. The black widow should be done tomorrow, I just need to finalise the base and a few little touchups.
I've received the techmarine from GW (the mail order version with the bare head) and I'll be cutting sick doc oc style on that one, and then it's time to up grade the cardboard rhinos and the GW baneblade to more chaos-worldy badness.
Now I gotta go get my paints...I had them over at the place we got evacuated to and forgot to bring them home!! lol

That is so cool, i have 1 small problem though, i think the light blue tenticles comming out of the mouth sort of take away from the beautiful work you did for the lenses on the monster's eyes-this is just me nitpicking however. Good job.
Lemmingspawn
30-01-2008, 00:46
Yeah fair point Khorghan. On the other hand, I think if I didn't do the tentacles blue the eyes would disappear into the model a bit... There is a little too much blue on the tentacles though, and that would have served better if I hadn't gotten a bit carried away. It happened like that coz I was having trouble with the paint breaking away on this one so I over-did the blue a bit trying to fix the patches...

30-01-2008, 07:05
Very impressive stuff!!
I think your infantry models would look even better if they had more of the wonderful rust of the vehicles though. A bit too silvery now, in comparison. Still, great job so far.
How did you paint the blueish vertigree (sp?) effect on the models? Looks sweet!
Hi,
I'm really impressed, and was very intriguted to see you built the chickenindictor and the other vindictor out of card. My question why not use plasticard? How does the card fair in the rough and tumble of wargaming (ie does it get squashed?) And what thickness of card do you use?
Thanks and keep up the great work.
Lemmingspawn
30-01-2008, 12:09
Hey man! I don't use plasticard simply because I don't have a supply of it, and when I can get it it's a bit expensive for some jobs. So I simply use card. I usually coat the card with superglue and that soaks in fairly deeply so it's pretty tough. I haven't had any real problems with it not being durable enough, but when you bind it with superglue and use thick card and reinforce any flexing areas, you're pretty right. Not to mention a good undercoating with a spray tends to add strength as well. Sometimes it's not as easy to paint the card items though, like I had trouble with the chickendicator, the surface was a bit rough but that worked in my favour.

Well, since I've adopted the moniker of Iron Giants for this army, I've completed the Chaos Lord, who is equipped with Plasma Pistol, Combi Flamer, Twin Lightning claws, Mark of Khorne and Juggernaught (both represented by the extra weapons and size - he is actually equipped with a combat servo harness assembly a-la Doc Ock). I used a mail order techmarine as the basis and I have a few bits to tidy up with GS yet, but you all have the pleasure of seeing it after the work I've done over the last couple of days. Here's the pics:

nice, did you find the full harness a pain to put together, when I had that model I did, still yours looks sweet can't want to see him painted and walking with ripley and conan
Lemmingspawn
04-02-2008, 10:03
Yeah I didn't have much trouble with the harness. The only trouble I had was trying to dry fit it with bluetac, my bluetac was crap and wouldn't hold. So in the end I just went with my mental pic and it worked pretty closely.
Few more details to add though.
And Conan is stomping around looking for his painter. I've been hiding.

Also, I love the eyes on the spider defiler. I'll adopt that for my Brass Scorpion methinks.

Ok, small update. I've been looking at the defiler and knew that I had to update it somehow and get a little more colour in. Problem is, I knew I couldn't do too much otherwise it'd spoil the effect. So what I thought I'd do it add some glow to the eyes of the mask. I think it turned out pretty good, here's some pics to show it finished.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/tamanade/Iron%20Warriors/DSCF5415.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/tamanade/Iron%20Warriors/DSCF5414.jpg
I think it improves the artistic aspect by drawing the eye upwards and over the model, while the lava draws the eye down. Interesting dynamic and I like how it works. But it's an evil destructive robot so I have to speak of aesthetics and artistic appeal in hushed tones so it does not attempt to destroy me...
And on another note, I've started painting Father and Spawn. They are in the final undercoat stages (ultra metal weatherings) before I start on the extra fills. I have also started modifying my two rhinos for use in the army. It was a bit of a chore to start with but now I'm really starting to see the fruit with them. Tomorrow you will see pics of the Rhinos. And tomorrow I shall reveal their dark secret....muahahahaha!
Some of you may want to kill me. But it's ok, I can live with that.
Love Conan the Defiler!
The blue is ok, but in the pictures it looks more like just some color than a glow.
It might just be the picture though.
All in all, yet again awesome stuff.

the verdigris also contrasts pretty good!

Ok here's the Valentines day gift to all you nerdy gamers (like me!) :p
First of all, just a WIP of the Father and Spawn Lord combo:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/tamanade/Iron%20Warriors/DSCF5423.jpg
And second, the rhinos I promised. There's 2. They look cool. Lotsa spiky bits and gubbins. But wait, something is wrong....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/tamanade/Iron%20Warriors/DSCF5435.jpg
What could it be??
The answer to that question is:
They are scratchbuilt out of cardboard. No original rhino parts used to make these suckers...(except for the chaos spiky bits)
Brother-Captain De Angele
14-02-2008, 06:32

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/tamanade/Iron%20Warriors/DSCF5439.jpg
Up until recently, having these models finished meant I was really really really really close to finishing the entire army... Now I actually have 5 more terminators and 10-11 more chaos marines to finish off.
Damnit it's never ending!!!
And to answer the question about how do I transport this army? I honestly don't know yet...
Weilding is easy - run shoot run shoot fight!
Bloody h*ll!
Those are brilliant.
I especially like the Father, the lighting is perfect, as are the colors.
You've shown extreme skill in painting large models and now shown you're just as good (if not better) on small models....
I envy your skills.

Well, here is the last of whats needed for the tourney list. I'm gonna slow down on Iron Giants updates for a bit because...well I'm sick of building and painting them! Painting mostly...
After this it'll probably be back to the orks and the models I have to finish off for that army. We'll see.

Goddamn it Stormcrow! I almost gave my monitor a good hosing when I read that :) I had a mouthful of water, read "grey knights" thought "Huh?" and then the revelation had me wishing I'd swallowed 2 seconds earlier... :)
Thanks for the comments, guys. This army has been a blast to paint, and I still have about 17 models to go to finish it, but I'm putting it on a temporary hiatus to make sure I don't burn myself out on painting them...
On an aside, I'm currently dolling up some orks and I've decided, once that's done, I'll build some more terrain pieces. I was thinking something along the lines of the Iron Giants bases but on a larger scale that can tie in with the army a bit, and then correspond to the board as well (lava floes bursting out and so forth) so we'll see how that goes... :)
To answer the question about yellow - it's based with Gold yellow from VGC, and then glazed with orange brown, brown and then lightly with black. That's what gives it the shades and weathered look. Same washes and glazes I use on the metallics and...well...pretty much everything else in this army...

I just happened to come across this log, and this is seriously the most beautiful Iron Warriors conversion work I have ever seen. I'm almost glad that I don't convert, simply so that I need never have my work compared to your masterpieces.

Tomorrow I will have an exam to take my pilot license, yet instead of studying all I can do is looking at your awesome work. I normally don't like scratch built things but you have swayed my opinion. I love the lava paint.
By the way, I don't know why but green paint job (some kind of rusting?) made me think about some marble effects on those minis. Would that be too out of the place?

Well I only just found this thread after finding your Ork one and my first reaction was to realise tht I had creamed myself!!! nothing worse than cum in ure pants, girls just don't understand!!! Anyhoo away from pornographic and back to models absolutly incredible although after all the compliments your head must struggle to fit through doors now lol. I love the walking defilers and well everything could you tell me how you do the blue for the power weapons? is it just blending up from a light blue? do u do it in lavers or mix on the model to blend it up?

It's not that bad an act of threadnomancy - it is still in the process, but I have the ork project on my mind until I get that done. I have soooo many orkses to paint before I return to this baneblade yet. So I have to discipline myself until I finish them. I'm about a 1/3 the way through painting them, so it'll be a few more weeks before I get that far.
And just an update - these bad boys won best painted army at CowCon 2008 - so I'm happy with that result :) They got a good deal of being ogled at while there :)

Lem, figured you might want to know; these (http://www.thearmypainter.com/index.php) folks are about to put out some metallic spray primer. If your old GW spray starts running low, they may be a good choice. (I say 'may' because the priumer isn't out yet, and may suck, I have no idea).
And crap, there was something else I wanted to say (besides 'awesome models', which I have said several times before) here. Dammit.
Lemmingspawn
01-08-2008, 10:48
Yeah I don't use GW spraypaints. If I want to be raped price wise there are plenty of other sellers who can do a good enough job of that with better products. It's 20 bux a can here for GW sprays, and 7 bux a can for the stuff I use - and it's a better product. Just doesn't have the range of flat colour paints that the GW ones did.
And besides, those guys dont' sell in my country - it's tough getting aerosols through the mail :(

i must say very awesome work!! so great it has inspired me and ive almost completed a version of yours for myself. It looks great too:D i have just one question for you pertaining to size - does anyone ever hassle you for having a different sized stand in model than the real GW defiler?
would anyone else have a problem gaming against that sized model?
Lemmingspawn
03-09-2008, 13:00
I went to a tourney with it - they were all mostly in awe of the model than concerned with the size. It's made mostly from a defiler anyway - it just stands a little taller. Most people like that because they can see it more often to shoot at it... :)
As for updates - well - I'm getting close to the end of the orks so we'll have to see what I'll do next. I have ideas for the things I need to revisit (including the IW army) but you'll all hvae to wait for now.

I'm glad you've posted some new stuff Lemmingspawn. That way i don't need to comment on a long gone thread. I must say your army looks amazing, i'm seeing it here for the first time but recognise some of the stuff from CMON.
I like the gritty/dirty look on your Iron Warriors and the way you used the yellow instead of the normal gold rims and stuff. Also the scratchbuilds are quite amazing. I'll be following this one from now on.
By the way, have you ever started/finished you Iybreasil Eldar models i saw on some of the shelves in your hobby room? I'm having a log of my own Iybreasil Eldar army somewere around here and i would like to see how yours look for inspiration.

Well here’s the update I promised. He’s not quite done – I’ve got a few little things to do like integrate the wings daemonically a little more and maybe trim the facemask back a bit and finish the base – but it’s getting pretty close. I also can’t decide whether to put the shoulder pads on or not – I kinda like it without the marine shoulders…
Let me know what you reckon, if I should or should not.

I would take the pads on him, but then i think its mainly personal preference.
Great DP!! the head is a tad large to my liking and somehow a big hammer would be nice for an IW - but really, one sweet model!
Really cool army!
I would go with the shoulder pads on the daemon prince (I assume that's a daemon prince?) The shoulder pads are a really bit part of what makes a model look like a space marine. Right now he looks really good, but he doesn't have the heavy torso build of a space marine.
That being said, like ashc said, it's mainly personal preferences.
Great Daemon Prince all around, but I especially love the look of those wings! Saved for inspiration. :)

Ok - had a fair bit of feedback on this and I think shoulderpads are the way to go. Maerlyn makes a good point that the shoulders sag a lot without them. And it's also been said about it looking like a heavily armoured dude without the heavily armoured part which makes sense too.
I've gotten the shoulderpads mostly done - I just need to tweak the spiky one because it's a bit weird at the moment. Without shoulder pads makes it look rabid like it's going to run in rashly and cut sick. I think with shoulder pads it makes it look brutal.
I like brutal more - fits the theme. Maybe one day I'll make a DP without the pads and do it up as Khorne. That suits...

I've been really enjoying the sculpting side of this model. I've tried using water, KY, not vaseline because I don't want to deal with the residue and the latest I've used is a clear Aloe Vera product. It's really really flipping good! Aloe makes it so easy to work with. I'd imagine vas would stay workable longer, but aloe is easy to wash off and easy to deal with. Vaseline gets on everything and is a pain to remove so I really really like the Aloe. Water doesn't work that well for me and KY is strange to work with in this situation.

Yeah, with shoulder pads. No doubt.

brilliant model, just fantastic, I want one now!!
That demon prince looks amazing, really inspirational design, and the mechanical wings are awesome. The only thing I don't like are the helmet horns, just because I don't like horns that stick up really vertical. Everything else if first class. Especially the mechanics on the wings because to me they look like jets.
Edit - scratch that last comment, I didn't see the other pair of horns... I have no criticism anymore. They match nicely.
Brilliant as ever mr Lemmingspawn.
I agree with the GS-shoudlerpad looking a bit odd, although I can't say why....

wicked conversion ideas:)
It's hard to see, but the head looks really cool. However, the old one had a better Iron Warriors vibe to it. The expressionless coldness does it for me. An open mouth like the new head gives it more of a truly daemonic look, which I always find works well for Khorne and Slaanesh, but less for others.
It can be argued that you don't need the head to be Iron Warriorisk though; the wings have plenty of iron in them. Still, if it was up to me, I'd at least keep the mouth covered.

I've gotten through a good deal of the painting but I'm not entirely convinced of the colours. I can't work out how to improve the way that it looks - there's just something about the overall appearance of this colour scheme that I can't put my finger on...

But the wings and helmet look great painted up

I think it looks really good. The only points i noticed are the white horns on the head, as they stand out maybe to much. The left claw maybe could be darker, a very dark red.
Apart from that a great model and army so far.

Well assuming this guy has to go with the rest of the army: I'd drop the red.
Maybe a greyish or whitish skin will work better.
The painting is great, yet as you yourslef pointed out, something is off...

maybe highlight the red up some more to make it look like the lava.
I think you're lacking in silver/steel and hazard stripes.
He's majestic indeed, but right now he looks more of a Word Bearer than Iron Warrior.
spekkiebig
21-09-2009, 11:12
I think the human skin tone the Eavy Metal team used would look better om your Deamon Prince. The painting itself looks great as always though.
I agree with spekkiebig, I think normal flesh tones would suit him much more. The red grabs too much attention from the armour. It's well painted, don't get me wrong, but i feel the flesh grabs your attention too violently to pay attention to the rest of the model. Maybe where the flesh melds with the metal you could keep the red, to make it look like the mutations are sore before they calm to the normal skin tone.

I've played around with the colours but I'm going nuts. I'm much happier with the effect now. I'm not entirely happy with the wings but I suck at freehand and I suck at patterning flat surfaces. So I think I'll stay with this final colour scheme unless someone can give me a brilliant idea to finalise the overall effect...

My only problem with the colour scheme is it now looks like papa smurf gone bad...lol

edit: and ignore the way the head looks huge - my new camera has this weird fish eye effect when I get closer to the model, creating anything nearer to look slightly enlarged...

Very impressive.
You should do a photograph of him under a UV black light.

Just finished looking through pretty much the whole thread for the first time and I must say, your stuff is absolutely amazing. As some other people have said I think one of my favourite bits are actually the bases, the lava and the glow from it is incredibly well done.
He's looking a lot better now :D

Epic hread is all I can say!
1 thing - maybe you mentioned it somewhere before, but how do you get the blue/white of your power weapons (champion sword, terminator claws)?

Amazing! I love your Iron Warriors, the deamon prince looks awsome. I must do one for my IW. I kinda liked the other head though, but I'm glad you changed it......now I can use it as the head for mine without looking like I coppied yours, muahh. What rules are you using for this army? The regular CSM codex seems to plain and incomplete for a true IW army.

Well, I favoured the old head. I don't really like the new one, can't help myself. But a piece of damn good conversion and a overall nice paint job.
