Here I go with my next project, in between throwing Yidhra in the bin, finalising rusty nuts the killdo kannon, painting a Pythia for my wifes birthday, if I get it done, and fantasizing about my mega-cheesy Iron Warriors army, I've decided to start on the Iron Warriors and stop dreaming about it.... :)

And not paint the balloon just yet....

Coz I don't want to....

Here's some pics, because my posts aren't posts without more pics....just coz....

The Beginning...

Actually no... this was the beginning....

And the next beginning...

I'm having a little trouble getting the walking vindicator-bot up and running, so if anyone has any ideas, they'll be uber welcome....

Is this going to be actually mechanical/mobile with capstan motor and gears? If the answer is yes, send me a pm so I can soil myself to eternal happyness.

Now about the other daemon prince (?):

That is Frakin' awesome! How did you do it? Did I mention it was Frakin' awesome!

11-09-2007, 08:21
Not a big fan of Chaos myself but that titan thingy is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too good for words.

11-09-2007, 08:36
Its early to be swearing but I just did, and loudly.

Why not mount it on a crab like body a la the Defiler but... you know... good. It makes sense that a seige weapon like that would grab onto nearby buildings while it fires its main cannon...

When Black Roses Bloom
11-09-2007, 08:46
Hey! Lemmingspawn! Give us a picture of the backside of the behemoth!

asmodai I visualized what you said. I got goosebumps imagining the thundering of the cannon and the creture bracing itself against the walls.

11-09-2007, 08:51
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees, this is going to be SPECIAL :)

Lovely work on the first "thing" :) Judging from your earlier work, this is a perfect project for you.

11-09-2007, 09:09
Thanks for the comments guys... :) That defiler is my fav, it surprised me too how well it turned out and how much fun I had making it.

Here's the back:

It's actually predominantly a single defiler kit with some plastic tubing and bits and pieces of junk, which is probably becoming more and more my signature style - "King of the Junkbots!" :)

I'm not going to automate it, although that would be cool. Those cogs and stuff are just there for bits.

The crab legged idea is actually crossing my mind, I just wanna steer away from using the stock defiler legs and would prefer to scratchbuild on this baby. I have another defiler and I want to build it too, I'm trying to think of another way to assemble the defiler different to what's already been done. I like doing things different.... so if I get any ideas, .... well ... you'll know about it sooner or later...hehehehe

11-09-2007, 09:09
Wouldn't a Vindie on legs be... you know... a Defiler? well, similar to a Defiler...

But it looks awesome... and Massive!!! What are those plastic bits from?

And you're Walking Defiler puts mine to shame... :( I'm gonna go smash all my stuff now because I'm so pathetic... Can't wait to see more :D

11-09-2007, 09:27
That's it! I'm gonna have to finally add a Defiler to my Chaos army and make it a biped walker! Thanks for the inspiration!

WTF beastly beasto mcbeasterton

11-09-2007, 17:00
That is Frakin' awesome!

Now that is exactly what I was thinking when I saw it! :D

If the rest of the army is this good, it'll be amazing :)

11-09-2007, 17:58
That defiler is simply amazing! Its... words fail me. Such a unique concept and well executed!

14-09-2007, 06:40
Well guys, I've been a bit slow on the progress of this one for a couple reasons - 1 is I'm a bit creatively burnt out after the steam stompa....takes me a week or two to get over such big projects; 2 I've been a bit stumped as to how to begin the army - admittedly I probably should have started with the easier stuff but I am DETERMINED to start with the scratch vindie/defiler coz, well, with the apocalypse rules I'll need three if I can take them as a linebreaker squadron.

So I've been playing around with brainmatter trying to get something working upstairs and here's a concept I started on to see if it might work...

It's ok, but the footprint is too big, I'd have to rework that... This was before I stumbled across some steampunk-esque stuff and found this one that I think is actually the idea I had, just fleshed out better:

The idea on this one is to make the central body sorta like one of the current vindicators, but as if they had mutated like they'd come into contact with the allspark (Transformers reference), but not as complex as they are in the movie obviously.

Another variation that I will incorporate is creating a 3 toed stability foot, 1 toe forward, 2 long toes sorta back and reinforced to give it the appearance it can actually fire it's cannon without flipping for an olympic medal.

Then I found this one-
Which looks almost like they drew it after seeing my defiler, the good thing is I can use this as a guide to building a second defiler, and to make it look different enough from the first to make them more interesting as a tag team deal.

And this tank is just TOOOO beefy to ignore:

I might make a huge one of these as a type of chaos or ork battle fortress. Either way it would work I reckon.

14-09-2007, 06:46
Very impressive.
The chains and mutilated flesh keeep it from overstepping in to Orkishness quite nicely :)

17-09-2007, 10:54
ROIGHT! Boys and girls, finally got some action going on this army. I've started on the first vindicator walker, and since it's a sorta cross with a vindicator and a defiler maybe it should be called "Vin Diesel"? lol

The legs have been started and with these I have used some balsa wood to help build up the general shape of them before covering them in card to improve the shape.

Here's the progress:

I need to enlarge the foot because the leg cowling is too large for it, but other than that I'm pretty happy with how they are turning out. As a bit of a pleasant surprise they're looking kinda like mini warhound legs...maybe I'll carry that theme through a little further. :)

Lord Commander Eidolon
17-09-2007, 11:48
so its going to be a mini chaos titan? awesome

17-09-2007, 13:13
great start, just love the scratch building quality on this log

17-09-2007, 13:30
To make it really unique and not too Titan-esque you should do a third leg like that. Position them in a similar fashion to your first mock-up and it will look really cool/odd. I really like the three legged idea personally and it would really take you away from the overdone walkers with two legs IMO.

EDIT - I forgot how great that Defiler was too - great to see it again :)

Looking good but I would say the feet need to be bigger!

17-09-2007, 16:41
Oh my!

If the rest of this army is anywhere near the standard of your defiler, this will be an awesome army. Subscribed!

18-09-2007, 07:40
Ok I've been playing around with the legs today and this is where I got. They're almost done, I just need to add some chaos glyphs and stuff to bring it into line with the iconography once I've done the rest of the building. Trouble I'm having is with building the upper section, I built a big part somewhat the same as the pic but I don't like how it's turning out.

I then played around with adding the oversized turret I built previously and, to tell the truth, I kinda like it. I just need to rebuild the feet again and make them large to improve the proportions. Anyways, let me know what you reckon, I'm a bit stuck.....

Legs assembled:

Oh man, this is bloody awesome. I sir do subject thee to the trials of the league of extraordinary modellers....No really you should join, talk to sir scrubout. That defiler is amazing, and the calibre of the scratch build on that new defiler is insane. Can't wait to see what happens with the rest of this log. Subscribed.

19-09-2007, 08:34
Here's some more of the bizzo, I've been playing around with some bits and pieces I have lying around, including this scratch turret I made ages ago for a card leman. I think it looks better but it makes it look like a "chickendicator" instead of a vindicator.

Which leads me to a new thought...lol...the other idea I have for a vindicator stand in is the 4 legged crawling vindicator with a ball for the central cab that is real spikey and panelled....making it the Pindicator...

And then you'll see in one of these new pics the newly named "Fat headed dictator" vindicator tank. But it's more orky so I may be forced to convert that one to orkdom....

Here's the pics, here's less chatter:

Chicken flavoured

With the first head

And the team Chickendicator and Fatheadedictator with some scrap thralls for scale....

Comments are welcome, I'm tending toward the chickendicator and half considering the fat headed tank as a second vindie in traditional tank form.

My idea for the tanks are they are variations of the vindicator that the Iron Warriors were experimenting with to make them more effective in a battlefield role. They still work like the standard vindies, and they all count as having the usual equipment plus daemonic infestation or whatever it is now, hence the lack of pilot space on Chickenlips. Probably will get havocs as well, but I don't know if it's worth it since they can't fire them anyways, unless someone blows off the main cannons. I suppose if they get neutered that way the havocs aren't a bad backup plan....

20-09-2007, 08:29
Ok, I've compromised on the head. I've kept the same shape, rebuilt it and resized the second head. Here are some pics for you:

I like it a lot better this size, I was almost gonna just leave it chicken style but now I'm happy with the way it looks now.

20-09-2007, 08:38
That's really neat!

too many spikes!!!
You will be hurting yourselves playing with that :)

21-09-2007, 01:50
That's what bases are for....:)

It's not that bad, there are some good easy spots to pic it up by. Besides, it is my little desert flower... :) Of boomy doom :) ...

21-09-2007, 03:44
I have to say that those conversions, both the Defiler, and the ongoing Vindicator are awesome! Just when I think that the Iron Warriors were stale and boring, you have to come in and shake it up again! :D

21-09-2007, 04:39
you have to come in and shake it up again! :D
With big pieplatey explosions! :)

Thanks man, I like to make things different and to add some spice to stuff. The iron warriors have captured my imagination for a while and I finally get to build them using the ideas I've had for a while.

23-09-2007, 04:41
Huh. Have to say that it's quite depressing to read this log.
Why? 'couse I had some idea of building AdMech force with quite similiar consept, you know uber walkers as leman russes and so on. And then I see this thread and realice that my skills in modelling are way too limited in comparison to the OP.
Anyways it's a good read this log and anything else of yours. Keeps me motivated. Maybe in the future i'm capable in modelling skills as yours. Before then, bye,,,

edeit: you have to understand that it's 6:44 in the morning and i'm quite wasted, so please bear with me...

24-09-2007, 09:15
Well today I started playing around with the dread...why? Coz I wanted to, that's why. :)

Here's the original pic they have in the chaos codex, so much better than the nasty old dread they made out of it:

Here's the parts I've updated so far:

And beside the box and the vin-diesel....

25-09-2007, 08:47
Here's todays udpate. Haven't been well and I haven't had much inspiration for the CCW's on the dread. I want this to be a 2 ccw dread with a heavy flamer and a twinlinked bolter, but I have yet to develop the ccw's so that I like them...

Been stuffing around with ideas and they look stoopid. Feel free to give me some ideas, I'm at a loss at the moment.

At least there are rivets in this update...lol

25-09-2007, 14:05
what about some claws?
i dont like the whip whatever from the standard cybot ^^.
on my own (but i sold it), i scratchbuilt a hammer.
i could post a pic, but its blurry, but maybe u'll get a bit inspired then.

26-09-2007, 08:25
Rightio, I'm pretty happy with the dread now. I decided to go with the power flail design and boy, it turned out heaps better than I thought. I need to learn to trust my first impressions... :)

I feel that I've gotten it to the point where if I add too much more it'll be out of aesthetic balance, but feel free to give me new ideas that will help cinch it up another notch in how it looks. Enough talk, onto le pikachus:

"I feel not for you, pitiful mortal. I will not spare you, it shall not end quickly, for my unholy master will have is way with your essence."

What do you think? I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out.

bram kuijpers
26-09-2007, 08:30
i think there is something missing like a dead eldar, guardsmen or a space marines hanging from his bloody arms?

26-09-2007, 10:49
wow... those flails look sick!
you've given me some ideas for when I have the money to add to my Iron Warriors for Apocalypse.
I've seen quite a few bipedal Defilers, but can't quite figure out how to do it.. being a Metal Gear fan and the general fact the look much better, I want to add a couple to my army, can you give any tips?

26-09-2007, 10:59
Outstanding, you've taken an old tired model and brought new life into it! I love the Power Scourges! What kinda wire did you use to make them?

26-09-2007, 11:07

The best advice I can give anyone about this stuff is look at multipart toys and other types of models outside 40K. I have been using parts out of crushgear solid kits and I have a number of missiles and spares from model aircraft kits I use all the time.

Also, get yourself a stock of different photos to look at when you need inspiration. And don't be afraid to cut up some expensive models!!! Just make sure you're really really patient while doing it or you'll end up worse off that when you started! :)

I have a huge collection of all sorts of bits and pieces from all over the place that I use all the time, as well as plastic rod, tube, square and rectangular tube, spikes, and all kinds of useful shapes and things.

Outstanding, you've taken an old tired model and brought new life into it! I love the Power Scourges! What kinda wire did you use to make them?

On the scourges I used 2 different types of wire. The first one is a mild steel craft wire that's about 1mm thick; the second is guitar string about the same thickness. And the "knuckles" are really really thin solder wrapped around the bends, three loops each and then glued in place with superglue.

Thanks for the comments guys, this one turned out better than I expected. :) It's always good when you persevere with a model and it turns out well, even though halfway through it's not looking as good as you hoped.

27-09-2007, 04:47
Ok, here's the little bit of work done today. I might get some more done this weekend as I'm keen to get this vindie done, I want to see how it turns out in full before I decide if I'll make three based on the same design or not.

It's had some SRT (spike removal therapy) done on it because a few people have said there are too many and most importantly - my wife agrees... my most honest critic and my greatest support :)

Here's the pics:

I plan on transferring the infestation over the legs as well, and select other parts, but not as much as on the turret.

Let me know what you think.

One thing I realise, though, it needs rivets to make it look like it's actually coming toward completion.

28-09-2007, 10:05
Ok I've done some more work on this today, which I don't normally do on a friday but today was special. :)

Here's some pics of my progress:

I'm considering removing one of the spiky leg plates completely and replacing it with a heavily plated one, making it one spiky and one plated. I'm trying to think of how to do it and still make it work aesthetically, because the infestation is going beyond what I originally intended. Bet some chaos general has heard that more often than I have.

Anyways, any comments or ideas or thoughts on that would be awesome. I want to make this thing work in well with the rest of the army, and going overboard with infestation kinda isn't going to fit that well....

bram kuijpers
28-09-2007, 10:47
chainmail covering the uper part of the leg , and of course DONT! make it to full of stuff.

love it btw:D:evilgrin::D

28-09-2007, 11:04
That looks ace, can you give us a close up of the feet? I have a thing about feet...it is allowed, isn't it?

28-09-2007, 11:07

Dread's design was very good ^^
I like it!

So, are you going to paint your Iron Warriors in green and some orange?
just your beginning? or the original one?
look forward!

28-09-2007, 12:41
Reminds me of an evil chicken!

Its really come together brilliantly, Instantly Chaos when you see it.

28-09-2007, 13:26
See i wasn't convinced when you first mentioned the idea but this has come together really well - model looks well balanced and you can see what it's supposed to represent. The excecution on that upright defilier is extremely impressive.

Iron warriors can take basilisks - howabout a silly big gun on carriage with a couple of defiler type legs on the front to drag itself forward?

28-09-2007, 14:17
IW used to be able to take bassies, but the new rules changed that. I can take 3 vindies or 3 defilers if I want now though...:)

29-09-2007, 10:29
Ok, I've made some mods to the beast and I've started doing some extra work on it. Now I'm having trouble working out what to do *BLING* wise. Here are a few pics, lemme know which ones you like or which ones you reckon would work best - or even any suggestions are welcome, since this isn't an easy point on the model.

As to the mods, I've brought the legs a bit closer together and mounted them a bit higher, it seems to improve the overall aesthetic balance. But some ideas to help me get past this roadblock would be really welcome

No bling:

Small bling:

Combo bling:

Large MR-T style bling:

29-09-2007, 10:53
Personally I like the small bling the best.

29-09-2007, 11:27
nice to see all these great scratchbuilt vehicles

great stuff! i love the chains and the welded hatch on top!though that dread conversion is really cool - very simple yetlooks soo muc hbetter than the GW one!

29-09-2007, 13:52
Small bling definitely makes it look faster and mobile... but Mr.T. just gives that impression of a heavy tank... like a WW2 Panther in ambush mode or something.

God damn that's one sick walker.

Great job!

29-09-2007, 20:47
Looking great, I think small bling gets my vote

30-09-2007, 02:19
small bling: chains = look like someone put them there for no reason... although they look good...
"Large bling": chains could have some sort of purpose, although they are a bit too big...
combi bling: nice compromise

30-09-2007, 11:41
Excellent. I'd say try and mix the 2 gauges of chain if posible; give it some variety.
Also, I reckon you could put some exhaust pipes on the top/back of the turret, give it a more intricate profile ....

30-09-2007, 11:44
I'd go for the combo-bling as well. Looks more chaos-y that way.

Great work Lemmingspawn! Great work!

01-10-2007, 09:41
Rightio, I've done some more work on the chains and I'm pretty happy with them. A couple of the lengths look a little weird but they'll do for now. And hooks for the ends, that's definitely next. It's nearly done, and soon I'll be anchoring it to the base.

Anyways, enough talk and more pics:

Thanks for the help guys, it's helped me to nail the image a bit better. I was kinda stuck. :)

Inquisitor Steinmann
01-10-2007, 11:55
The addition of the chains really finished the model off nicely. Very unique design. Keep you the good work!

Lord Commander Eidolon
01-10-2007, 15:30
very nice mate, chains are a nice subtle addition its very refreshing to see good scratch built chaos vehicles

02-10-2007, 09:00
Well, I have been stuffing around this arvo and not really done anything...lol; I've just been playing around with some loyalist marines that I had lying around that I'll convert to chaos dudes as well.

Here are the pics of what I finished off on the Vindicator:

And a pic of the top shelf of my model shelves:

I'm a bit over building the vindicator at the moment so I won't be doing any more vindicators for a bit. We'll see how that goes, anyway.

02-10-2007, 14:20
Looks fantastic, will this or the dread be getting a lick of paint yet?

02-10-2007, 22:17
No paint yet. :) Too much to finish building...

I like to approach it in bulk lots rather than piecmeal. I know the defiler is already painted and everything, however it was a bit of an inspirational model. I did that one completely for the modelling side of things, but the army is a combo modelling/gaming event.

03-10-2007, 08:11
Here's my current progress - the beginning of the troops. This mean ass dude is based on a standard marine which I had bits of lying around, so I took the liberty of convincing him to deny his loyalist creed. Took me a little while but he's mostly there. Tomorrow we should see the final scerics of his being devoured by chaos... muahahahahaha!

Anyways, onto pics:

03-10-2007, 09:31
I'm diggin' the old school Chaos missile launcher pack.

03-10-2007, 11:06
Great stuff mate - top modelling!

Amd thnx for the looksie at your top shelf, hadnt seen your Ork Mek before. Also really like the "converted" marine. I have plans to do a retro Chaos chapter at some stage largly based on standard marines without too much OTT so the last pic is great inspiration .......

04-10-2007, 08:57
Heres what I got done today, just a little coz I had to do other stuff as well, so I didn't get to finish everything I wanted to. Oh well.

The dude with the old school techmarine backpack will count as a sergent/champ or whatever they are with a powerfist. I'm using some space wolf models and bits, and I think space wolves already look part chaos anyway so they're a good start here. :)

08-10-2007, 08:48
Well I've made a bit of progress today. I only really completed the aspiring champ and then got bored with converting loyalist to rebels so I cleaned off the parts from all the sprues ready to start assembling the standard chaos marine bodies. Only for chaos space marines, no termies or other types. It turns out I'll have almost 40 marines in the end, which is pretty cool. I didn't expect to have that many in the end so I'm pretty happy.

Then after I finish all the termies I should end up with 9 in total.

SO! When I get to the end of the assembly I should have:

38 Marines, Champs and Lord
9 Terminators
3 Vindicators
3 Defilers

Maybe I'll do 3-4 Rhinos and if I go TOTALLY insane, I might go to a superheavy like a titan or something. Or if my bro goes and sees a baneblade it might be time for one of those... :)

Here's some pics of what I did today:

I really like how he turned out, it's better than I expected that's for sure! His kit out is power fist (represented by the servo arm) and combi melta. My idea for the army is incredibly shooty, everything taking heavy a$$ weapons and the like. It won't have a good deal of close combat, but the idea is that most things should be kept at arms length.

That's the plan, anyway. I expect things to go south though. They always do. :)

08-10-2007, 09:47
*dies goes to heaven sees god using lemmingspawn as mortal tool*

10-10-2007, 07:49
Here's the latest pics, I've got all the heavy and special weapons done, with a couple of troops and the 3 aspiring champs with various kit out. I just have to finish basing the specials and heavies and that;s done, and then I'll go ahead and add some other finishing touches to each model once I've got the lot ready.

Here's the pis:

In the beginning there was plastic:

10-10-2007, 08:23
got some serious painting to do there dude!

10-10-2007, 09:38
The silly server wouldn't let me post the rest of this earlier - here's some more details...

Aspiring champs backpack - I like it, I like it a lot : )

Casual Heavy bolter:

10-10-2007, 09:45
Good lookin' stuff!

15-10-2007, 10:00
Ok, I've got an update for yer entertainment. I've base-ically been working on the bases. Got them mostly done today, now all I need to do is finish off the job by completing the loyalist conversions - 5 to go. Then I have 6 loyalist termies to have a go at...

And then onto some defiler action!

That which is done:

That which is yet to do:

15-10-2007, 19:36
Damn, you convert fast. Great details such as the backpacks. Is there a plan for the HQ yet?

15-10-2007, 22:16
I'm still working on the HQ thoughts. ATM as far as the new codex goes, I'm considering having him equipped with 2 Lightning claws, a plasma pistol, a combi melta, a mark of Khorne and a Juggernaught. That's rules wise - and then convert the model so that those are represented differently. Very mechanical and shooty and nasty. I'm still thinking it through, but my concept is something like a gun toting dock loader...(Aliens)

16-10-2007, 09:01
I've finally finished the base troops for the army. All based and ready for undercoat. Next in the list is to make up the terminators. I have 6 on sprue and 4 old school ones to convert to more current style models. If they don't turn out I'll just convert the old school termies to something else, maybe obliterators instead...

In the end, I should have 3 Defilers, 3 Vindicators, 1 Dread, 10 termies, 36 Troops and a juiced Lord. Maybe I will add 3 rhinos and 1 razorback to that mix.

Here's some pics:

The pile of bits:

16-10-2007, 09:02

And the army at present:

17-10-2007, 04:19
Instead of an update today, since I'm waiting for stuff to soak in acetone/simple green for stripping, I thought I would post some pics/brag about what my bro turned up with the other day.

I get home after a hard days modelling, and what is there sitting beside my computer??

Nothing says love like Apocalypse - I love my brother. :)

Now to decide what army to put it in!!!!

17-10-2007, 06:32
Just went through this entire thread; You sir are my favourite modeler around; everything you put together is pure win. Im glad you decided to build an army after your defiler. That chicken walker and that dreadnaught are incredible, and your troops are proof you can take your skills to a micro level.
My only concern is that you will try to build that baneblade as per Imperial instructions...

17-10-2007, 07:51
I'm actually seriously considering another scratchbuild along the lines of the vindicator but standing in as a baneblade and obviously being a bit larger...

As to the imperial instructions, just so it still looks like a tank is the extent if i intend to put the blade into the chaos army. Haven't decided yet - I still have 10 termies, 2 defilers and 2 scratchbuilt vindies to worry about yet...:) MEQ

17-10-2007, 09:56
nice work lad!!!!!!!!
wish my bro was generous....i really need the apoc book but $95 bucks (aus)!!!!!!!!!WTF
really really cool maybe you should make the baneblade have legs

18-10-2007, 07:59
Well it seems like the general consensus is to build a Chaos Baneblade - I'll hold off on that for the moment though, because I might build something walkerish with the baneblade armament...

But today...

I've started on the terminators, and I have a total of 4 old style termies that I'm converting and updating so that I have enough to bring the squad up to ten. I'm also using the Chaos Terminator Lord/Sorceror sprues to make a standard termie, and to add in some of extras to a general detailing of the rest.

Anyway, here's todays work:

20-10-2007, 01:12
Anyone got any thoughts on armament? I'm thinking of equipping 1 with the reaper, 1 or 2 with heavy flamers, 3 with lightning claws and the rest with the standard power weapon/twin linked bolter combo. Either that, or I'll just do three with power claws, 3 with power fists, and 4 with power weapons. Or I'll go with mainly bolters and combi-bolters. Or I'll go 3 power claws and the rest standard. Or I'll shut up and wait for ideas... smile.gif

They're mainly to be part of the back-line to protect the tanks from assault, or to distract people from eating my tanks with a dash of salt.

20-10-2007, 04:17
wow. that thing is awsome. love to see that on the table. man, i would love to be able to make that

22-10-2007, 09:23
Well, after finally getting unkeisterific (the sitting on of) I finally got some more action on the termies. I thought that magnets was such a good idea, I sat around thinking about how I could make it work, really I did. And if the models were all standard terminators out of the box (chaos ones I mean) then I probably could've pulled it off.

Problem is, roughly half need full conversions, so I'm going to end up with a nice mix of types, 4 twin linked bolters, 3 LC and 3 heavy weapons (1 reaper and 2 flamers) and that will do me. I might add a combi bolter in the mix but we'll see.

Enough ramble and onto the pics:

I wasn't intending on doing any with bare heads, but the one in the pic is kinda armoured...with those metal bands going over his cranium and all, so I thought it would fit. It looks pretty nice, one of my fav bare heads in the mix.

0_o i have read through the whole thread, omg simply amazing vehicles. GL painting it

23-10-2007, 09:35
I've finally constructed all the termies, so they are done. Based and such, you can all see the PVA lava floe as it has just been applied before photography. One thing I have to say, the new chaos terminators are NICE - it was real hard trying to match in the old ones sufficiently with the new. And I'm not entirely convinced I did that well, but they're ok.

Here's the pics:

My favourite of the bunch is the one in the middle of the above pic. I just love the way it looks and feels. Followed a close second by the one to it's right.

23-10-2007, 11:49
Stuff's coming along great, especially loving the Chaos Termi's, all the little touches are great.

PLus you haven't gone crazy spikey on them either, which is always a major plus for me.

24-10-2007, 07:43
Now. Here's my dilemma. I didn't start with the idea to make a defiler like this. In fact, I wanted to make a variation of the Ripley. I tried but all that happened was my imagination had other ideas...bast@rd!

Anyways, this was what I started with to try and make a variation on the torso I made for Ripley, so that I could start a new beast of uber bang bang death:

Minus the tentacles sprouting from beneath it, of course

Then I ended up with this:

And finally, because a close combat defiler needs one cannon, I tried this:

With no intention of building a redback defiler...and here's what I get. Evil tentacled spider octopus. Lemme know what you think, although it'll be nearly impossible to disassemble at this juncture, I can do other stuff with it to make it a bit different. Ideas are definitely welcome.

Funny thing is, in real life it looks pretty cool, but in the pics I'm a little "meh" about it...

I'm blown away by this thread.

1. The IW defiler/dread is spectacular. Lotsa kit bashing to make that happen. Most versions I've seen from other boards either are to top heavy or bottom heavy. This is perfectly proportioned.

2. The Next dread is really awesome and actually reminds me of the Aliens from the movie Independence Day. Thier battle suit looks very similar. Spectacular job.

3. The Vindicator is really nice. Very cool and possessed. Again, good proportions. It looks like an evil AT-AT.

4. The Troops are coming along nicely. The termies are amazing so far as well. I really dig your Uber Termie.

5. The last defiler is something out of matrix and 40k. If it floated it be one of the drones floating about when Neo first awoke in his pod. Really sick. Great stuff.

You're a modeling animal. Very inspiring. :)

24-10-2007, 19:55
Good on you Lemmingspawn!
This thread is mighty inspiring to follow - so please keep up the conversion-extravaganza!!!

Here's an idea for the redback defiler: add a mouth into which the unfortunate victims are drawn by the tentacles - e.g. a pair of orc-dread buzz saws or some pincers or at least some decent spikes.

25-10-2007, 08:20
Fantastic Defiler conversion, Lemmingspawn, very original and imho improves the model vastly! Well done

25-10-2007, 08:37
I've removed the turret, because that was the main thing that was bugging me about the thing and added an underslung cannon. It's not quite as large but it still serves - it can be some kind of experimental chaos plasma blast cannon or something fluffwise - but it will still do the defiler cannon thing.

The cannon:

And with big brother!

Mighty Chicken
25-10-2007, 09:03
Just one more suggestion: why not add some kind of venom-container-tank-thingy to those pincers - I reckon that would underline the deadly spider image even further.

25-10-2007, 09:11
That's not a bad idea, I might work on that one... :)

25-10-2007, 10:03
wow! that is amazing the venom is a good idea keep it up you spawn of a lemming you

25-10-2007, 10:36
Oh man I wasn't feeling the first version with the cannon on the top, but seeing what you have done with it now I'm really liking it mate! Another great Defiler in the works...

Mighty Chicken
25-10-2007, 12:50
Could ou please post a pic of the front (from the point of view of something about the size of a human). I was so fucused on the cannon itself that it took me some time to realize that the cannon-picture is actually taken from behind.

Thanks in advance!

25-10-2007, 13:09
Here ya go... :)

25-10-2007, 13:47
Are you going to to put chains on this one? Only you seem to have an endless supply of it!

25-10-2007, 14:17
Spider-bot is frickin' awesome, where did you get that array of eyes from? Works perfectly of course, and the mass of mace-tentacles on the front is inspired (I originally thought Cthulhu-bot)
Terminators are looking good; with those bases and mixed up arms I think the metals blend well, should work better painted

Mighty Chicken
25-10-2007, 14:18
Here ya go... :)

This, mate, is ueber-awesome!!!

If you go for the venom-tank idea, make sure to apply some drops to the pincers !

25-10-2007, 14:25
The "Spider-eyes" are a really nice touch! And everything surrounding it is awesome too! A lot of people do the Scorpion thing, but I personally like this Spider a LOT better! And looking at your paintwork I am not the least bit worried that this thing is going to look REALLY awesome!

25-10-2007, 14:48
I am seriously considering leaving chains off this one. If I go too much more on this one it'll be too far over the top for my taste. There are a couple of dangly chain bits and I think I'll stay at that. There are plenty of trophy racks to take their place anways :)

I have played around with a few different chain ideas, but they look like they slow it down. I like how this one has that jumping spider look and looks real agile. The way it's standing here makes it look to me like when it fights machines it pounces on them and tears at them with all legs and tentacles, and when it takes on terminators or troops, it leaps into the midst and starts tearing flesh and armour alike apart.

The eye array on the front is the Tau command vehicle pieces off the Apocalypse sprue. It works really well, and I'm glad I found a cool use for the pieces...for a while there the apocalypse stuff was looking a bit like it wouldn't have an application :)

Venom drops is a nice idea; I'll certainly be playing around with that idea too. :D

Captain Jerican
25-10-2007, 16:01
That's cool lemmingspawn, I was just curious as the chains do seem to be a running theme but you're ideas really justify it, keep it up!

25-10-2007, 18:37
I can picture that thing tearing a hole in a tank with it's claws, then sticking the cannon in and blowing it up.

You know, this could just be my perverted mind.

25-10-2007, 19:30
This army looks very good so far, I love your conversions, from the small ones to the big ones. And your warmachines; WOW!

Keep up the good work, I'll be watching!

26-10-2007, 05:34
I can picture that thing tearing a hole in a tank with it's claws, then sticking the cannon in and blowing it up.

You know, this could just be my perverted mind.

Not that perverted :) I was actually thinking along the lines of pull the prey in close and finish it off with the cannon or the fangs, but "stinging" vehicles LOTR spider style (can't remember her name) is a cool idea too. :) Fits with what I want for the beast. Stabby, choppy, shooty death!

26-10-2007, 06:25
Nice idea, I got a thought of it scuttling across a squad of IG, kicking, impaling, and liquifying troops en-mass with its legs and mace-tentacles, leaving gribbly death behind it....
Isn't Imagination fun :)

26-10-2007, 06:38
Here ya go... :)

OH SHI..!! The Matrix has invaded 40k!

Still so cool...

26-10-2007, 06:47
Holy cow. I was a huge fan of your original defiler thread; I'm really looking forward to following this one too!

I love the spider; I'm glad you moved the cannon to his belly. I'm really impressed!

28-10-2007, 05:22
that is so cool

bram kuijpers
28-10-2007, 08:00
lemmengspawn... you are the ******** king of conversions!

28-10-2007, 11:56
Spider defilier......so awesome..............scary awesome..........I want one

28-10-2007, 12:49
Awesome work on the new defiler

28-10-2007, 13:02
My god.. that's ridiculously awesome.

29-10-2007, 14:08
Well I've finished based and finalised the construction of the Black Widow pattern Fast assault defiler, with new improved stabby tentacle ends and hot lava base to match!

We haven't had power here for like 6 hours so I'm doing a quick post before I go to bed. Here's the pics, and I've started on the construction of upright defiler number 2. I'm considering arming the second with twin linked lascannons and either twin linked flamer or havoc launcher. Haven't decided totally yet. I think another ccw would probably be better but I'll work that out as I go...

And a taste of the ideas I have for the new defiler:

29-10-2007, 16:52
Much prefer the new flail tips, it looks more like it has those 5 attacks now. Plus it's a nice visual link with the dread

29-10-2007, 17:05
I love that spider...

29-10-2007, 18:56
I'll add that black widow defiler onto my list of cool things done with defiler kits that I wish I had thought of and done first.

29-10-2007, 18:59
uck tour a bastard lemming. you've stolen all the good iron warriorness, now i'm gonna have to go and build Dies Irea just to get ahead.

good work, i like it, despite the fact you've gone and put my iron warriors in the dirt.

29-10-2007, 19:20
Would that be the next defiler hiding at the back of the last spider pic? Looking good...

29-10-2007, 21:14
Gribbly defiler man. If I played a game against that I'd be hiding under the table

30-10-2007, 13:14
LOL! Thanks guys, I'm loving building this army, it's a lot of fun! I'm just wondering if I'll have as much fun painting it...maybe...just maybe... I can get it painted by Christmas...

Well, since I haven't started painting yet, I've started Ripleys twin sister, the clone with the alien child within! Yeah, that's a cool idea, chained within the belly of this beast lies a daemonically possessed alien host...mwahahahhaahahahah!!!

Have a look at these pics, the main complaint I had about Ripley was the legs seemed a little weedy. Here's an attempt at making them look a bit bulkier, although just keep in mind this is not the final pose, it's all bluetacked (oh god I HATE getting bluetack out of models!) in place to give me the impression I want.

Here's the box I begin with. This box is the whole of the bits I have set aside to draw upon for the second upright defiler:

And here is what the second hip-leg structure looks like at this point in time:

I find it really hard to copy the Ripley because I want the second to have a similar feel but it's own individuality. You know, like how Ripley original had normal humanity and Ripley clone had acid blood, black fingernails and crazy wild insane behaviour?

Well, lets see if we can capture some of that...hmm...I think that's all captured in Ripley 1...doh!

30-10-2007, 21:43
Maybe you can make Ripley II into more of a siege machine; give him/her a pneumatic drill/jack hammer type of arm (of course it has to be humongous) and a very sleek (but Iron Warriors style - big and 'industrial') looking turbo-laser cannon-thingy. I don't know lol because as you said Ripley I is quite ... frikk'n osome.

Comrade Wraith
30-10-2007, 21:49
Just found this log.....you have some amazing skill there my friend! I love the whole quake 4 strogg thing you have going on, espescially the walking defiler with the body tied to the front

31-10-2007, 05:16
Here's a quick note on what I've tried, what do you reckon?

31-10-2007, 07:03
Oh dang! I think he should be hunched more if you can get him that way, kinda reminds of a gorilla ya know? So it could be a big mechanical gorilla that's standing up to take a pot shot with it's cannon-for-a-head.

Comrade Wraith
31-10-2007, 09:40
Wow, this will look brilliant.....maybe you could pose its arms to make it look like its roaring? anyway whatever you want, keep up the good work!

31-10-2007, 11:41
I've been looking at this thing all arvo and I can't get started or any fresh ideas...even with the concept which indicates I've got a bit of creative block. To help alleviate this and waste no more time, I've decided to simply stick to the Ripley design and just do the weapon variations and maybe a different styled CCW instead. Save the monsterbot for another project at another time...

More to come tomorrow when I get back on track.

31-10-2007, 13:07
Looking at the new pose you have there, I have to agree with MF3000 - if you go with that sort of body (with the long gangly arms) I'd be tempted to make it more hunched. You could get a lot of dynamic movement in there if you make it look like it moves like an ape. I have to say though I'm not a fan of the cannon head. Perhaps if it was shoulder mounted like a Predator or something? And making it a siege engine with a huge rock drill would be awsome. :)

Keep up the good work!

Mighty Chicken
31-10-2007, 16:01
I fully support THE CHIEF's idea of a shoulder mounted cannon (this would have to be a fair bit more massive than the Predator's...). Also, if you go for the hunched look, you could fit the heavy flamer in whatever kind of head the thing is gonna end up with.

Looking forward to whatever you'll come up with!

31-10-2007, 19:51
It'll be a big gigantic Krootox - in Chaotic Iron Warriors' menacing machine of mayhem sort of way...

Comrade Wraith
31-10-2007, 23:11
Might i recommend you looking at screenshots/vids (probably off youtube) of quake 4? this game includes lots of half organic-half-machine, creatures and machines, and fits (in my opinion) what you are doing in this wonderful project.

Keep up the outstanding work

01-11-2007, 01:59
looks even more awesomlicious!

01-11-2007, 03:40
If it where me it would be more hunched over with the cannon on the back and then a sweet head with cables and chains running every where... Just an idea tho

Btw sweet thread!!!

01-11-2007, 09:11
I've been playing around with this and here is a cannon stand in I'm working on. The plan is to make it like a huge rate of fire minigun style weapon with explosive shells, that will count as a defiler cannon in all ways. I am going to replace the current barrels with an assault cannon style set with some shielding and other differences.

I think I'll go with the arm mounted idea instead of the shoulder mounted, but have a look at the two designs and let me know what you reckon.

Or shoulder:

BTW, if I did the shoulder part it wouldn't have that arm section sticking up in the air like that...lol

I think the shoulder is ok, but in the pics the arm mounted one grabs me more. I like how the cannon is coming along though, the details are finally getting easier on this part...

01-11-2007, 10:02
i'm a fan of the shoulder mount. i think that, combined with a cracking CC arm would create a brilliant look for ripley #2.

that said, the arm is effective, last time i saw the first ripley at this stage i though "uck another crap conversion". i am glad to say, i have never been more wrong.

keep up the awesome work dude, it'll be great either way

01-11-2007, 10:23
If he has the gun on his shoulder, what will his arm be like? I kinda like the idea of an arm-gun thing. But the shoulder mounted cannon looks kool too.

Mighty Chicken
01-11-2007, 10:27
I agree with you Lemmingspawn that the arm-mounted gattling cannon would look neater. I don’t really know why, but for some reason it seems more appropriate to place guns which fire lots of rounds and have smaller barrels (even if plenty of those) in a models arms…

Go on – show us what a REAL assault cannon looks like (“That is no assault cannon – THIS is an assault cannon) :]

Rabid Bunny 666
01-11-2007, 13:55
I prefer it as the arm version myself, just looks more menacing.

01-11-2007, 13:59
I go for gun arm too.. Whatever you choose this defiler is going to be sweet.

01-11-2007, 14:01
Amazing conversions.
i never had the guts to try an upright defiler

I also like te shoulder mount, all depends on what the arm is like though

01-11-2007, 17:15
Another vote for the arm mount. Great work

03-11-2007, 19:40
u rock lemmingspawn!!!1
that defliler/dreadnaught/iron warrior walker u showed in ur first post is amazing!!
seriosly i almost spontainiously ejaculated from looking at it!!!
im not looking at the rest of ur oposts till i uhave bougt my self some new pants(just incase)

04-11-2007, 02:59
Damn. Now I wanna go buck-wild on some IW conversions too, but have none of the requisite materials. fgsfds.

04-11-2007, 05:03
this is oozing with bang bang death

06-11-2007, 06:42
ANYHOO! Back to reality - I've decided I hate working on this defiler and the sooner it's finished the better. SO! That means that the job has been finished, no questions asked coz I couldn't be AR$ED to do any more conversion work on it. This will do I think. So happy or not, this is what it is! I tried adding chains but I couldn't do anything I was happy with , so it's another chainless beast. But it is very spikey. Very spikey and trophied (not atrophied) is good.

I figured the head wouldn't be too bad on this one, and I do like how it works, although I WILL have to name it Conan the Destroyer (Destroyer for short) given it's massive pinhead look.

And a family shot of Conan with Ripley:

Don't they make a lovely couple?

The final fitout of this one is Defiler cannon, Twin linked Lascannons and Havoc Launcher. For those hankerin for a shoulder mounted gun, there it is! For those yearning for a chest mounted weapon, there be ye lasers!

06-11-2007, 07:19
Damn he looks like a 'knight' with that defiler head on.

Looks good to me, I understand what you mean by not being happy with it. Oh well. At least it's finished!

06-11-2007, 07:28
I do like him. He is just represents that chaos armoury we all think about, mutated and transforemd by the evil gods.

06-11-2007, 14:42
If it's painted anywhere near the standard of ripley, it'll look amazing

06-11-2007, 15:35
My friend, you are without a doubt one of the most psychotic and gifted modelers out there. Those models.... pure, tear to eye, brilliance.

What ever you do....dont ever stop doing what you're doing.

06-11-2007, 16:00
This thread futures some awesome modeling. I bet the opponent would **** his pants if you put these on the table :P

06-11-2007, 16:20
That's amazing!! You could do a Datasheet for them for your Apocalypse games! :D

06-11-2007, 16:37
Fantastic work on the newest defiler convo.

Thumbs up

06-11-2007, 16:49
This is really great stuff Lemmingspawn. I'm looking forward to see some Iron Warriors painted, instead of all the Titan/Defiler/Tank goodness. :D

06-11-2007, 22:25
Wow... I see... but I dont belive it. Perfect idea made whole army "on foot".
I think I break some legs ...and body ...and guns from my defiler :) Is too dificult resist and dont try somethink like this.

07-11-2007, 07:11
Here's what I've done today, just used the defiler leftovers and made a little Vindicator walker number 2.

It'll do the job and it's not too bad. I almost converted it to another CC defiler, but I'll keep it as a possessed vindicator. Roughly the same points cost anyways... :)

Cool thing is, if they bring out a defiler Spearhead datasheet I'll be ready.

07-11-2007, 08:38
You have got a lot of painting to get done lol.

Lovely work tho Spawny! :)

07-11-2007, 08:40
Very kool... I like the little 'face' section.

07-11-2007, 08:44
You could use it as a brass scorpion!

Mighty Chicken
07-11-2007, 12:36
Awesome looking conversion (as usual, I must say :D).

Just one thing that bugs me about this and a lot of the Brass Scorpions and crablike defilers that have a tail-mounted cannon: they do not seem to have any means for storing ammo (or in case of some energy weapon – energy supplies). One could argue that the tails houses all that but seriously…:eyebrows:

I reckon the model would benefit a lot from some kind of shell/power magazine.

14-11-2007, 08:55
I'm still thinking through how to power the tail "sting" but my thoughts are to put power supply cabling up to the energy projection unit. That or rebuild the top section into what I was originally thinking of, a huge spikey ball with a cannon sticking out of it, ala pinhead with boom boom.

Well, in case you guys thought I was dead or sick of this thread or both, I thought I'd give you an update for where I'm up to at the moment.

I must say, I'm thoroughly sick of working on walker, I spent most of Monday trying to model a mini warhound style beast for the 3rd in the walkie vindicator sequence, and just packed it in. I've worn that puppy out.

So now, to link it a bit with the baneblade I'll be packing into the box I have built a variant vindicator tank, which I made out of the big head and the card leman russ on the left of the pic:

Here is where I am up to, sans chains and rivets and spikes and other type chaosy dangerous stuff:

On the side and on the front of the model you'll notice big green blobs, these are amorphous eyes protruding from the shell of the beast demonstrating how the daemonic host sees...through the cracks in the sides of the vehicle caused by it trying to burst through...

Mr Feral
14-11-2007, 10:28
Incredible vehicles and models.

14-11-2007, 18:32
That makes perfect sense! Oh, why do I never have these ideas first...

14-11-2007, 21:18
Brilliant spawn of lemming!

15-11-2007, 08:35
Well, I don't think the final 2 vindicators are amazing but who cares, they're good enough for my frazzled creative glands... All I really need area a few more of the chaos spikey bits from spikey vehicle sprues to finish it but I couldn't be bothered chasing any up...oh well...it still does the job.

Man I am so creatively burnt out for the moment - that means only one thing - it's almost painting time! !!!The crowd goes wild!!!

And here's the current pics of the army as it stands now. All I really need to complete it are 2 things. 3 chaos rhinos and the completed baneblade. I gotta get more spikey bits for that!!! And skulls!!! And.........inspiration........

Mighty Chicken
15-11-2007, 11:48
If you're looking for decently sized skull-decorations for the hulls of those rhinos and the baneblade, I humbly recommend the "arcane ruins" box (I think they used one of those for the fortress of arrogance…).

Looking forward to see all those brilliant models painted!

15-11-2007, 20:03
This stuff is just great. Looks like you've got a lot of painting to do. Anyway I normally hate mechanics, but this is great! You've given everything such a chaotic feel. I'll keep a mutated eye on this one!

16-11-2007, 13:58
ohh man i love how you made the dreadnought look like the original drawing

16-11-2007, 14:43
Hey Spawn, What's the whole weather balloon looking thing in the back suppose to be? Looks like an interesting addition to an ork army though.

18-11-2007, 03:23
Yeah, the balloon is actually part of my ork army, the mek is trying to steal ideas for his Waarghboss.

Ok, well this isn't much of a blog post, but it's an indication of my success with my shortcut attempts!

Here are the problems I faced using silver undercoat:

1. Loss of details - metallic spray would be thicker in my mind
2. Gloss only available - getting the paint to stick
3. Affecting other paint going over it - enamel (shouldn't be an issue) and metallic (shining through)

So I have had success in all three areas!

1. Loss of detail - dulux silver is fine, just don't spray too much and it covers BETTER than white or black undercoat due to the paint pigmentation and it needs less paint
2. Add more detergent than I normally do to destroy the surface tension. This is only really necessary for the first couple of layers to get the paint something to adhere to
3. Inevitably this will have some bearing but at least it's a spray and I won't be getting as much cross contamination in the other paints. I'll just need to watch my layers, but it should actually work out better than normal because, being a spray, there's no chance of contaminating the wrong paint water and getting flecks in the opaque non metallic paints.

So it's all good and I'll be undercoating TONIGHT ready for painting tomorrow - I hope - :)

I still have a few details to add to the two newest vindicators, so I'll leave the undercoating of those for a little while until I get them totally finished.

And here's evidence of my success - not much going on yet, but you'll see more soon enough my fellow modelgamers! :)

18-11-2007, 04:09
Heck, slap some black and yellow on those, and they look good to go.

18-11-2007, 09:29
Wow, simply wow.
This army is incredible, and I can´t wait to see it finishied.

22-11-2007, 08:25
ROIGHT! This weeks work; picture speaks a thousand words:

22-11-2007, 08:25

Nuff said. :)

22-11-2007, 08:34
Wow... you're so cool. Like... it's such an osome little army. They all have character oozing out of them... and obviously they'll get the best paintjob around... lucky miniatures they are.

22-11-2007, 14:29
Lucky miniatures? I thought that they where just plastic? Looking good, pleace, keep updating.

22-11-2007, 15:56
Awesome, good to see that someone else is using shaved-down Berserker heads for their Iron Warriors.

Where'd the brown come from on the spray-coated miniatures? A very slight wash, or something more sinister?

23-11-2007, 00:14
Awesome, good to see that someone else is using shaved-down Berserker heads for their Iron Warriors.

Yeah, mine came from not wanting to spend money on buying more models, so I used all the ones that came in the big army box :)

Where'd the brown come from on the spray-coated miniatures? A very slight wash, or something more sinister?

Nothing sinister, it's just a couple of very thin washes of VGC Charred Brown, then charred brown and black, which had to be mixed with dishwashing detergent for the first few layers so the paint would adhere and spread naturally over the gloss silver undercoat.

23-11-2007, 02:03
It looks great. If I weren't a lazy sod, I'd try something of the like out!

23-11-2007, 04:17
Fantastic Log! I'm excited to see what you do with the paints after reading through the whole thread. What is the giant scratch built vehicle on your shelf? Is that a custom land raider?

Keep up the awesome work, you have an army like no other!

23-11-2007, 05:35
niice mob of IW! knowing that every model has been awesomely converted is just gravy...

I third the use of berserker bitz mixed with CSM; once the khornate shoulders and belt-buckles, and the rabbit ears are sorted, the chained torsos, cc weapons etc are perfect for regular CSM, even adds some true Chaotic detailing to them

24-11-2007, 18:26
The Iron Warriors are lookin' nice.

28-11-2007, 08:09
Just a quick teaser: here is where I was up to at lunch time, just before I started the weathering. Hopefully tomorrow will see the completion of the first squad of troops.

Mighty Chicken
28-11-2007, 08:18
Just a quick question:

Are you planning on building some kind of display board? I reckon that'd look mighty awesome with all the lava bases.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

28-11-2007, 09:20
I know that this has been said to death, but awesome work. I too had pegged IW as a visually cliched army until I saw this thread, your defiler and marine conversions are fantastically rendered.

28-11-2007, 12:23
You paint very quickly, impressive.

28-11-2007, 12:50
Well, that's not that quick - about 12hours there so far...

28-11-2007, 16:56
That yellow is really bright, I hope when you weather them, it tones it down a bit.

28-11-2007, 19:50
Looks very swanky. The Nurgle head doesn't really jive, but everything else looks good. Can't wait to see how the wethering goes.

28-11-2007, 21:35
Well, that's not that quick - about 12hours there so far...

I'd love to buy an hour for modeling at the minute! :(

Good work anyways Spawny!

01-12-2007, 10:43
Oh well, the nurgle head is my fav head off the new sprues. I've used one with it's original horns on it, and one I've shaved the horns off to use the head only.

Here we go, this was finished off on Thursday, but things have been so full on lately I haven't had a chance to take and post the pics for you guys. So here they are, they're not amazing photos but they give you a good idea of what they look like now.

The other thing is, these have been now varnished, but I need to add a few layers of gloss clear over the lava, with some glazes of reds and yellows to add to the "heat" appearance a bit.

2 more batches of 12 to go, then onto something else - maybe terminators :)

01-12-2007, 12:21
I love that you're using yellow instead of gold for the trims... ties it in with the whole chevron thing IW's have going for them. Also makes them look so vivid when they're on the lava bases...

Go go go!!

Mr Feral
01-12-2007, 13:02
The use of yellow is very nice, a good contrast against the silver.
I won't begin to say how nice the lava bases look.

01-12-2007, 15:20
Man, I've tried to get gold to look good on IW, but the yellow makes them so business-like, an appearance that is extraordinarily appropriate. I might try that out.

01-12-2007, 16:12
why is there no more *sobs loudly*
great models keep them coming

01-12-2007, 18:40
Those Iron Warriors are looking great. I love your style of painting with the brighter metal and yellow, but still weathered enough to fit with them. Can't wait to see some more marines!

floyd pinkerton
01-12-2007, 19:22
hmm, the yellow is interesting;)

i quite like your stuff, I should get painting mine!:D

12-12-2007, 09:41
Well, here we go! I've finally finished the main painting of the base troops and havocs. All that is left after the varnish is to gloss the lava with several layers of Tamiya clear, and then they'll all be done. I'm not going to town on the rust effects and stuff and details because these are the base troops. The more intense effects will begin once I get that far on the terminators and such.

Here's what the table looked like this arvo before I took the models to get varnished:

Here's the pics of what I've done so far; 36 troops with various weapons:

Mighty Chicken
12-12-2007, 10:46

Thank you, I did, do and will continue to do so :D.

Just awesome!!!

I'm absolutely amazed how you managed to convert so many individual looking models oozing character (I especially like the guy with the Berserker-skull-helmet with the spikes) yet create such a feeling on unison with the paintjob.
This is truly chaos!!!

12-12-2007, 11:03
This is a magnificent looking army. Chaos salutes you, sir :)

12-12-2007, 11:09
This is simply... incredible army painting standard.

What's your trick with the lava?

12-12-2007, 11:30
Tutorial please on metalics :)

12-12-2007, 11:33
wow. those CSM are just so amazing. and here was me thinking you could only make awesome defilers.

12-12-2007, 15:05
Tutorial please on metalics :)

Don't recall quite where it was in the log, but it's simply silver primer with a light wash of some brown concoction.

12-12-2007, 18:50
what is it that you use on the defilers base?

13-12-2007, 16:53
Holy christ, I love the first titan defiler thing, looks awesome, like the rest of your army..

Keep up the good good good work. : )

13-12-2007, 23:16
Righto, just a quick note on the metallics, maybe another time I'll go into more depth on it.

Basically what I have done is:

1. Undercoat silver
2. Mix up a wash of 1:12-20 paint to water solution. This water solution contains a small amount of detergent to allow it to flow better and adhere to the gloss undercoat
3. Slop the wash over the entire model and allow to dry
4. Repeat process, first few layers are just indiscriminate, but you need to watch the effect, don't "overslop" the paint on, you still need to have some control, but at the same time the paint needs to work on it's own too - it's a funny little technique, takes a bit of "feel". As you proceed through the colours, you do less and less, drawing back into the shadows.

For the colours I started with an orange brown, can't remember the colour, then mixed that 1:1 with charred brown, then straight charred brown for a couple layers, then 1:1 with black for a few more layers, and then to straight black. You can see the level that I got to before I then started with the yellow details, after I added the yellow and belts and flesh and whatever else I needed with some highlights, I then started again over the entire model to help tie it together with the shadowing. The only real trouble I have with this technique is that all the colours start to fade together a bit, but when I'm dealing with this many models, that's not too bad a problem, since it's mainly for the base troops anyways.

The lava is pretty simple, effect wise it's simply sago palm starch beads (sago pudding stuff) cut in half and glued down, then several layers of pva over the top to give it the bubble in liquid look.

The painting is blending thin layers from black through dark flesh to dark red to red to red orange to bright orange to gold yellow to sunblast yellow. I don't go higher than sunblast yellow on the tips of the bubbles because I don't like the way white looks on them, cools it down too much.

I then overwash with a thinned down glaze of tamiya clear red mixed with a matte medium and flow improver, slop it on a little, thicker at the edges, and allow it to get a bit streaky coz that looks cool, and then top off the bubbles again with the sunblast yellow.

Then I coat the lava with a couple of thick layers of tamiya clear gloss.

Hope that helps! :)

14-12-2007, 07:56
i meant what is the wood like stuff you use

14-12-2007, 08:29
No probs cyprus, I actually didn't answer your question but the one about the lava effect... :o sorry forgot about your question! It's just cork. I use cork pot mats from our local shopping centre, but any sort of cork with a decent quantity and texture will do. I also glue sand in strategic spots as well.

14-12-2007, 08:32
great thanks! of to build me some iron warriors

18-12-2007, 07:48
Here's a teaser of my progress at the moment. Just a teaser:

I should have these finished tomorrow for proper pics, and have started on the colour blocking of the dread.

18-12-2007, 20:51
ooh, very nice

how did you do the bluish blades? they look so perfect.

18-12-2007, 22:58
After reading through the whole plog, I'm still trying to comprehend the awesomeness of it, and failing. Miserably. The walking defilers just blow me away...and I really dig your energy-weapon paint scheme, that is really neat.

19-12-2007, 02:38
Ok enough teasing and some progress.

I've pretty much finished the terminators, there'll be some extra tweaking going on, Like I'm thinking of painting the inner section of the power mace a darker colour, probably the metallic, to stop it looking so much like a giant baby rattle, and a couple of little bits and pieces here and there.

I've taken on board most of the suggestions as well that sprang out of the progress on the troops, most of which I was already going to do but one or two ideas that I hadn't thought of or wasn't sure of.

Anyways, enough babbling and onto the main event! PICTURES!!!

19-12-2007, 02:40

And my very favourite:

And for those interested - the wheel of colours I use to paint the lava:

19-12-2007, 03:22
I'm seriously considering doing the decorations of my Iron Warriors yellow instead of gold. It just looks so much more business-like.

But yes, do monkey with the interior of the mace. Maybe a darker blue? Or hell, just plain metal will look swanky as well.

19-12-2007, 06:03
everything is this log is *********** amazing, everything!
how are the vehicles coming along?

19-12-2007, 07:59
Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm real happy with how they are turning out :)

I'm now after a bit of feedback on some ideas I have for the dread - following is a pic of where I am up to, about to start on some major weathering and I can't decide on the colours for the flails. I am thinking of either doing them entirely in the turquoise power weapon scheme, top to tip, or just doing the tips in the turquoise and maybe just fiddling the weathering colours in the arms.

Here's a pic:

19-12-2007, 13:32
I would say just the tips for the turquoise treatment

19-12-2007, 14:36
I'have to agree with Endemion. The blue all over might take away from the model.

PS.this is now my favorite log

19-12-2007, 14:38
If you must color the flails, go for the blue tips. I think they look more intimidating the way they are now, honestly.

19-12-2007, 15:19
wow i like the yellow on everything, i cant wait for the vindicators to be painted!

19-12-2007, 15:45
I'm just waiting for more bits for the vindicators. I have one I can paint but the other 2 need more details.

19-12-2007, 15:53
wow a whole page since i was last on this lo just gets better and better

19-12-2007, 15:56
As a fellow IW player I must heartily commend you on one amazing army there!

I can almost feel the heat glowing from the lava, stunning work.

Any palns for oblierators? They're very much associated with the IWs after all.....go on you know you want to! :)

19-12-2007, 16:45
I have just gone through this entire log... at work... and I am VERY impressed. You sir are an inspiration to me!

I can't wait to see more... so I am going to subscribe!

19-12-2007, 20:31
Just paint the tips of the flails, the whole things would look odd, to say the least.

19-12-2007, 21:41
That dreddie is like sex on legs.

Keep up the good work : )

20-12-2007, 22:10
So impressive painting with minimal work. I love it. Great contrast on yellow and metal. Lovely, just pure genious.

It's not a wonder that they look good. But the way you do them is absolutely nice. So "easy" and quick. Speedpainting for the win!

//EDIT: this is actually the first topic I really wanted to say something good about the minis. They are so LOVELY!!

//EDIT: this is actually the only blog I like in here, this beats all others. I cant make it in words how excited I'm about these minis, first time in 1 year!!!. You sir got me **** back to this great hobby.

//EDIT: ...just..so..lovely...

//EDIT: ...unbeliveable...

21-12-2007, 00:11
I've only usally seen Iron Warriors with a Bronze/gold colour scheme with a darker shade of Silver, but this lighter Silver with the bolder yellow really gives it a amazing effect, works really well with the yellow.

Look forward to seeing the conclusion of this log, will be great to see your whole army together

21-12-2007, 12:13
Thanks for the comments guys, it's a pleasure to do this army. :) I must say I think it has something to do with the Finnish blood in me... :)

21-12-2007, 12:59
What paints did you mix to make the bold yellow on the armor trims? I would like to make note;)

21-12-2007, 23:11
The yellow is VGC Gold yellow, and then washed down with browns, smoke and black. Then retouch highlighted by layering the gold yellow back on in highlight areas.

22-12-2007, 00:10
OMG I can't believe that I'm just finding this thread.

Amazing army mate!!!! One of the best converted armies I have ever seen. Can't wait to see it all done.

22-12-2007, 01:26
This is the coolest iron warriors army ever, those defilers are just dazzling and with a unique paint scheme to boot. Fantastic drednought

22-12-2007, 08:09
These models have really got me interested in playing 40k again.. loving the conversions! the strong, unified paint scheme is definitely a winner too.

22-12-2007, 22:42
you've done absolutely brilliant so far, it really makes me want to rip out my old chaos army from the depths of my parents cellar, well done, your an inspiration for all us who are just getting back into the hobby!!!

23-12-2007, 00:58
I am really loving your paint scheme. I opted for a oil slicked look but had i seen this before then I might have gone down this route.

I love your crazy Daemon Engines. Chaos as it should be.

angels of awesome
23-12-2007, 02:04
i cant wait to see all your defilers painted. this makes me want to go chaos

24-12-2007, 01:22
I could officially say now that once I've started my Cadian Army and finished it, I'm gonna build me up a Iron Warriors Legion of CSM. Just because of this thread.

09-01-2008, 07:10
And you guys probably thought I forgot about this or got bored... :)

Here's my progress, I've finished the dread, and have started painting up the walking vindicator. I'm not that happy with the model and think I might just go with the 3 defilers and then do something else. After all, a possessed vindicator gives you 1 gun and thats it for the same points as something a little weaker in the cannon, with a longer range, 2 more guns and CCW...defilers are better I think for what I want...

I'll still finish painting up the vindie, but then I'll paint up the defilers next.

09-01-2008, 14:28
and we thought you forgot about us but now your back and with models even better than before.

09-01-2008, 15:53
Very impressive blending you have done on the blue. I have tried to acheive that level of blending before, but not to that quality.

Really nice stuff... please don't wait so long for updates!!

Angel Robertson
09-01-2008, 17:04
Awsome looking dread, love the slight conversions and awsome painting!

10-01-2008, 02:02
I've only skim read this articel but can't find out how you did the silver. There's mention of `Dulux' in there.

10-01-2008, 08:07
The silver is an undercoat of a dulux silver. Gloss paint as an undercoat is hard to work with. I made it work but now it's getting hard in spots. I'll have to rethink it for future projects...

Here are the pics of the vindiwalker, and yep; I dont' update for ages and then you get two in two days! Amazin'!!!

The jobs rougher on this one, for two reasons:

1. The paint was badly misbehaving
2. After getting near the end I realised it suited it anyways - who in their right mind is gonna go near a daemonically possessed vehicle to try and fix or wash it anyways...unless it's dead or disabled.

And the view that says either RUN or you wish you had...

10-01-2008, 08:08
And a close up of the base:
