Ok, well i finally decided to paint my van saars and i always felt the suits they wear look like the still suits in dune so decided to go with that theme so juves start in black suits, then various shades of brown up to a very pale suit for the leader, any thoughts on this... is it too over done as a theme? and how good will browns actually look on the table top ?

I think it could work well, but there's things to consider:

1) How many different shades? Juves, Gangers, Heavies(&Specialists), Leaders.

2) How will you have gang with different suits, but still tie them together visually? Maybe a kneepad of a certain colour, guns all the same colour, find something.

Overdone? Dune? I dunno, personally, i haven't see any, though i'm not a fan of mixing different universes together... Like that time somebody tried to use some Jedi in Necromunda. Please, don't do that. It's okay to have references and the odd cheap humorous ripoff, but for a serious gang/army, i'd advise against making carbon copies of whatever's your favorite sci-fi.

I agree, but also suggest that the concept of different shades for different ranks and status is not a bad idea. I would definitely find a way to visually link the members - the kneepads as one color or even a derivative of a squad marking system to go with the advanced militaristic feel of the gang.

A great reference for a unifying color in an otherwise unrelated cluster of uniforms or clothes can be seen in Gangs of New York at the final massive riot scenes. The two factions just splashed two different colors of paint on their clothes in horizontal stripes (mostly).

I myself am trying to figure out a way to sculpt and color-code ranks in my forge workers gang - a catachan base, all of the fatigues are painted in a worn blue denim coverall, but I need badges or trophies to indicate experience or rank...

Anyway, the Dune idea is interesting but try and make it your own, it has potential!!

(by the by, if anyone has some brilliant ideas for a rank system let me know!)

IMO it'd work OK, as long as you had a 'gang marking' like an army badge. You know, like the picture on a biker jacket of something.

Also if you painted all the guns the same colour it'd tie them together too.

The reason i was going for the different shades was because in the film the 'juves' of dune Leto and Paul are in shiny pristine black stillsuits, the 'gangers' fremen have weathered to a dull brown in various shades and the 'leader' Liet-Kynes suit was almost sand coloured it has been weathered so much.... I would tie together with gun colours and wil probably throw in a gang badge or similar... to add a bit of colour if nothing else... i am still worried bout the brown being a bit dull.

Nope, I don't think so, I've painted heaps of models for dusty dry areas in browns and I think they look fine.

For Van Saars though, you might want to gloss varnish the armour plates to give them a shiny, hard look.

Try one and give it a go!?

Hm, if it's the weathering, you might wanna try giving them all the same colourscheme to start with, then weather each rank more...

Okay, I've not made it all the way through a viewing of Dune so I couldn't really picture the shading/weathering thing, sorry. However, regardless of that little fact, another idea would be to change color in certain sections of the bodysuits, i.e., knees, elbows, shoulders (especially for heavys, what with backpacks and such), and gradually weather the suits as gangers get more experience.

Weathering doesn't happen all at once on clothes. Look at a pair of jeans - they wear out at the knees and heels first on account of these being the most typically stressed areas. Jackets - wrists, elbows, maybe closures (zippers or the like), and collars.

If you're looking to show a weathered/distressed leather look on the bodysuits, remember that leather varies a LOT in color as it ages. Leather will actually get darker when it ages at first (due to buildup of oil or dirt and unintentional "polishing") then lightens as it is scratched or otherwise damaged.

Admittedly, darkening the leather would be harder to distinguish, so it could be assumed that juves might have had their suits long enough to break them in before their first fights.

Painting clothes to look like leather is also potentially interesting to represent experience/injury rolls - a ganger who rolls poorly while working a Chem Pit would end up with an "acid-wash" bodysuit as well as scars!

The gang markings would of course be maintained throughout. Try a test model or some such to practice techniques - this idea has a lot of potential!
