Then onto some fully painted stuff:
I finished another 10 of the black-and-white-checkers mob:

That painboss is the coolest thing ever! I love the sculpting on him.
Death Korp orks are such a funny concept. The grim determination of finding a glorious death is balanced by subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humor. Well done!

What can I say they're amazing!!!
The over sized greatcoats on the grots are brillaint and the shokk attack gun is absolutely fantastic!!!
The snotling in the hose is just absolute greatness!!!! :D:evilgrin:

I find this great when planning sculpting or colour selection. Most of the models is pretty grim and straightforward but then there are the pretty hilarious accents like the expression of some of the gasmasks, the bright colours just next to some muted "military" tones...

Thank you! (ca-crack!) Now get something new made for the CSN(OD)!
The snotling in the hose is just absolute greatness!!!! :D:evilgrin:
I tried really hard so that it was recognisable but still imply the thickness of the hose. I almost lost it with the mouth being too deep. My favourite is the hand and the suggestion of toes and knee just above it.
You're bloody brilliant.
Arr yer matey! Bloody is me favourite word!
Great work, all of them are really outstanding. What is your method with painting the ork skin?
Over the light grey undercoat (drybrushed with Space Wolves Grey to bring the edges out) I paint Scorpion Green, then wash it with Snot Green, highlight with Scorpion Green, wash with Dark Angels Green, highlight extreme highlights with Scorpion Green, wash with Vallejo Black Green Wash (brilliant paint, I wholeheartedly advise it to anyone painting green models of any kind), then paint some extreme shades (like between fingers) with pure Chaos Black.
Still learning

WOW, I only noticed that the pipe to the shock gun actually has one snotling inside and the pipe is moddel so you can see him in there, thats pure genius!
I thought this log hit its creative peak when i saw the submarine...but that shokk attack gun and the looted bombard....WOW
Wow!Those ork's are fantastic! Please tell me how do you paint the red, blue and yellow on the centaur!
Great, great, great stuff. It's really amazing what you achieve with your miniatures. I really like the theme and your colourscheme makes up for the biggest problem with DKoK armies - dull looks. Looking forward to seeing the miniatures painted.

Wow!Those ork's are fantastic! Please tell me how do you paint the red, blue and yellow on the centaur!
Blue: Necrontyr Abyss foundation, then Ultramarine for broad borderlines, then Enchanted for finer edge, then slightly washed with Ultramarine, then Ice Blue for extreme highlights. Finally, the borderline contoured with Black.
Yellow: Iyaden Darksun foundation, Elf Flesh broad borderlines, white fine edge, then washed the middle with Elf Flesh a bit, then painted over with Golden Yellow. Again, contoured with Black.
Red: Mechrite Red foundation, Blazing Orange broad borderline, Fiery Orange fine edge, washed with Blood Red, a bit of Fiery Orange on extreme highlights. Again, contoured with Black.
Those orks are definitively the coolest! Always a pleasure seeing your work. They truly are an inspiration to alot of us, leading us onward to greater heights within the world of modelling: That said, I'm going to have a sit-down and finish some plaguebearers on account of you. ;)

The skin on the boss seems darker, although I asume that is to represent his age or something. Very beautifully painted and converted.
I love the squad markings on the shoulder pads, they look great together!!
Man, I love those helmets, gas masks and coats. I have dubbed them DOrks D(dkok) Orks!
WAAAAGH!

Indeed. Orks are said to darken up when they grow and age. The darker the skin the "tougher" its wearer seems to an Ork. The Snotlings are palest and brightest, the Grots are a bit darker, Orks are a healthy shade of green, Nobz are darker than them, and da boss must be the darkest.
At least that's what I believe ;)

I believe that to be true as well. In addition, status is also directly proportional to their physical size.
Those orks are looking fantastic Hortwerth. Well painted and uniquely converted.

Update!
Looted Centaur Buggy #2!
I didn't paint all 3 in one go as I wanted to make them look different to each other, and I know that when I paint a squad it looks like a squad... Thus I painted a mob of Orks (above) before I got to the 2nd buggy.

I really like you're use of colour in these armies. The muted tones on the cloth is fantastic and the bases on the krieg are a great contrast. I gotta say though I want to see more of the pirates, since they are you're personal army!!!
The AdMech boys were awe inspiring and this log is promising even more!

Well, that was a conscious decision - I introduced the bright colours to offset the dull greyish-green "serious" scheme of the "looted" elements on both infantry and vehicles. It brings the classic comic Orky smile to the Krieg's deathly serious skull face.

Ridiculously good!
Most ork work looks messy and cluttered. Yours is so clean, so vivid. And yet so unmistakeably orky.
Most awesome Hortwerth
They look so professional; it reminds me more of the Blood Axes, rather than Freebootaz or Lootaz... but then again, they are still Orks lol. That's what I love about this army, whatever the theme, it never leaves that "orkyness" behind. Brilliant job man, seriously, one of the best armies I've seen - ever.

heh just for a change to all the "ZOMG YOU ROCK" (not that your stuff isn't cool mind you :P)
Im not to keen on these bright toybox/crayola colours. Especially in a Kriegian army, shouldnt they be dark and grimy, much more like your nobs? Heh ignore this if the client specifically asked for them (as Ive seen you go a bit nuts at other people's criticisms involving some Warpspiders)
Also there are some flame patterns on I think the shock gun ork that are not blended hugely well. Given this is commission work, do your clients mind if colors are not blended properly? Im interested in this from a personal perspective as while I have really high standards, if I ever started painting professionally im not sure what "joe blogs" expects.
however I really do like the conversion on the bombard. I see a lot of ork vehicles that don't really look orky enough. They arn't chaotic. I envisage them having grots crawling all over them, pipes, rivets, signs everywhere. Essentially a mass of orky-chaos. I think your bombard does this really well!

Ok, so I snapped there; but the client was so picky about everything with these Eldar that I was on the edge of my sanity :cries:
Good question!
As I chose the colours and painted testers for this army I found out that if painted in the "serious" colours of krieg it will suffer from every Krieg army suffers: infinite dullness. Youy can have a nicely painted army but without bright colours here and there it will be unnoticeable from 2 meters away, and that's the distance any army has to be noticed from - as other people pass the tables, they are drawn to vivid colours first, and then look closer to see if there's any detail behind them.
So I suggested the client to make the skin colour very bright, and the squad markings colourful, and he, seeing my point (as above), happily agreed.

Im interested in this from a personal perspective as while I have really high standards, if I ever started painting professionally im not sure what "joe blogs" expects.
I try to differentiate between the areas that were "originally" one colour and the ones painted by the Orks themselves. You can notice that the cloaks, helmets, metals, skin, original colouring of the vehicles, are all blended very gently - there's much highlighting and shading going on there, it's just that's blended so it's very smooth. On the other hand, areas painted by the Orks themselves have much more difference in hioghlighting tone, to make them look noticeably cruder. The flames on the helmet were painted by the Mek himself :D

I still think I could add more pipes, exhausts, and random stuff to the vehicles, but they look more purposeful now - and with Blood Axes or Krieg this is a good thing. I like the crews too though!
I am simply stunned by how awesome both the Krieg Orks and the Pirate Orks are. This is beyond brilliant. You should submit picks of your army to Firebase. The world must know about your brilliant work.
So when are you going to start work on your Pirate Orks and in particular Nitpak?!?

hmm good point about the orky v realistic details and how to paint them to differentiate.
I guess im not really into the whole "looks good from 2m away" Im a bit of a snob like that. Nothing irritates me more at tournaments when there is player voting for best army when all the player "judges" just walk around and look no closer than say 1/2 meter. Blah blah about "looking good as an army" etc etc
There is no substitute for clean highlights, smooth blending and a colour scheme that works! (Not really directed at you Hortsworth, just venting some spleen :P)
I really liked your eldar for the most part, especially the directional lighting in the vehicle cockpits. As if the light was emanating from their control panels.
Do you have any tips for directional lighting painting? As thats the next technique I want to learn.

I couldn't agree more. What one should aim for when painting an army is that it looks good from afar and from close-up. The colours have to be bright and the painting has to be smooth, clean and well done. Anything less is an insult to the army.
Anyhoo; your work is as always most impressive, Hortwerth. A very fun and well-done army. The colourscheme works greatly and I agree about the immense grade of dullness of DKoK armies.

The canopy - I took half of an old Grot and built a cockpit around with plasticard, complete with dials and buttons, lots of buttons and dials. Then I casted it in resin. I'll take some pics of it later.
The hull is made of PVC tubing - the electric montage stuff. It comes in wide array of diameters, sliding one into another! Just cut to size and voila!

Hortwerth, this whole blog is amazing and incredibly inspirational, from stem to stern, conversion to paint. I am just impressed to the core. The speed at which it seems you work is mind boggling.
I have a question, though, and as I have not completely read through the entirety of this thread, I did not see if this question was asked or if you answered it.
My question regards your painting - It seems that once you spray prime black, then use your airbrush to apply the grey then the white for the genereal light source and pattern of the lighting (I assume), you then paint the ork and grot skin a very light and bright shade of green. Am I right in guessing that a good part of your painting is done with washes, and the initially light skin tones serve as a way to allow you to do consecutively darker washes in smaller amounts, which really helps bring out the minis sculpted details?
Is that how you paint the majority of your miniatures? Or am i mistaken?

Indeed! Once I started painting with this technique I discovered that it speeds things up a lot and still allows for a top notch finish! I use a combination of washes, diluted paint-coats and fine highlighting. I made a tutorial on this method using a Warmachine model (http://www.privateerpressforums.com/index.php?showtopic=159520&st=50&start=50) - it was on my Warmachine army that I started using this technique on.
Anyways, some basecoated tanks are up around the corner!
First up, the half-track Trukk:

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq81/Hortwerth/Orkses/Krieg%20Orks/Grenadier%20Nobz%20Chimera/Trukkbasecoated4.jpg
The usual airbrushed undercoat, then Space Wolves Grey drybrush, followed by 2 washes of Catachan Green.
The inside is re-basecoated with Space Wolves Grey (as it covers best) as it will be Kommando Khaki (with washes) and it covers like... thin air.

And with the Nobz inside:

Sadly only 8 fit inside, but that was a conscious decision: it was more important to keep the dimensions and proportions of the half-track. Still, they would all fit inside if they were's mounted on bases!

Some people master the art of painting.
Some people master the art of modelling.
Some people just do both, but do them okay.
Hortwerth, in my eye, you've mastered every aspect of this hobby to the highest degree it has reached so far. Not just this project, but as I turned those 20 pages and looked at the sheer brilliance and the imagination, and so much labour put into painting them, I'm mesmerised.
Please keep up the good work, and keep posting them here, its just great to see your "art"
The half-track is truly awesome. I was planning to do similar conversions of my trukks and your great work here really helps me (or will, once the plasticard arrives). Thanks for sharing with us; it's a great army you're doing there.
i love that battlewagon......too epic (or should that be apocalyptic)? LOL
Not that you need me telling you but that is just an amazing scratch build and paint job! This is a truly awesome army!

I am amazed more and more with this log.
Half track is so super awesome! can we expect to see more half tracks? Or perhaps even Panzers?
Screw the Emperor, in Hortwerth we trust!
not too keen on the colours, but the model is top notch - great work on the hinges. really good
EDIT: that'll teach me to post before i see all the recent pages... man that battlewagon is awesome! when i was still on teh first pic i was thinking - where is the hatch, then i scrolled down and my mouth literally opened... very inspired design. a bit too many dents in the metalwork for my tastes, but that doesnt detract from the skill needed to make it. kudos to you!

When will we see some of these upgrade bitz on the MicroArtStudio pages for sale?!? Absolutely brilliant!!

I really like all the dents scratches and craters because you can just picture orks making using of things over and over and over. They would likely have pieces of armor, machines and weapons that had been on a dozen previous wrecked, destroyed, scavenged, and abandoned vehicles. Then add in their less than elegant or gentle methods of building or taking something apart and I imagine these vehicles are just what they would look like.
Bravo. :D

Awesome!
I just read your tutorial on the PP site. When you are airbrushing your black, dark grey, light grey what is the result here? Are you ending up with a flat light grey coverage over the whole model? Or do you airbrush in a way that it creates shading even before you add the GW paint?
Are you airbrushing just for the speed factor or does it create a better painting surface?
wow, your work is awesome. Superb modelling and painting, but I just don't get some of your colorscemes. Way too many bright colors, especially on your vehicles. It makes them look like clownvehicles rather than badass ork tanks...
Hey Hort, awesome wagon by the way.
My question is if you could go into more detail about the "pipe" you used for the grot fighters? I think they are just the tits.:D
Any help would be awesome.
I think he mentioned before where the colours were meant to be like that. Just to offset the serious mood of the DKOK theme and the fact that maybe the client might've wanted it that way?

The richness of the colours is great. I think Hortwerths only bad colour choice is his backgrounds for his photos used to be too bright. These models without lighting for the photos would look even better IRL IMO TTTT.

Love that concept.
The Orks can make something better than the original out of a looted vehicle. It might rip itself apart when the bullets start flying but what the hell.

these orks are ded proppa! are you using them as orks or as IG? if your using them for orks, then you have a lot more to do! keep up the good work anyway.

First off before i say anything else, I am completely amazed and have been sitting here at work now for 2 hours just starring in wonder.....
You sir are truely talented, can you PM me on what something like this would run/cost?
Next and this is just a nit-piky thing from an old ork player from the rogue trader days but orks are from Fungus...and thus have blue insides..which means blueish to highlighted tinticle pink tongues...blue blood ect...
I rarely ever (besides myself and a few others and I think a couple Heavy Metal articles) see this adhered to....just an FYI..
But in total those are just truely amazing models...and I will be slowly studying them to figure out how to get the chipped paint/rusted armor look.. That is something I have always wanted to try on my orcs...as the untouched fulling painted vehicle really doesn't scream ork :)

Except that Orks have had red blood in much of the artwork throughout the years - the one that comes to mind is the Space Wolves codex cover, but I know there are others.
That might be what the RT text says, but to be blunt - red blood looks cooler, and is much easier to identify as being actual blood. As a painter I would never have plastered that Painboy with a bunch of blue crap - nobody would be able to tell what the heck was going on with it :)
Yep. Ork blood has changed colour in the fluff somewhere between 2nd and 3rd edition.
Not GW's fault. Too many ork players didn't get it and many onlookers didn't get it either, so GW somewhat adapted to reality.
Great work Hortwerth!
When I saw the Ork heads on the micro art shop I couldn't resist.

Most of the time when i laugh at a log it's because it's just to bad to imagine. This one however makes me laugh because some of the stuff in here is just hilarious (FREE FOOD :D). Oh, and the painting and modelling ain't half bad either (nothing to laugh about there, it's just amazing ). What an amazing concept for an ork army and very well executed. I think the comic style colours fit the idea very well. Can't wait to see more of your stuff.

honestly Hortwork hasn't been around in a long time...(least not that I can tell)..
He is over in Poland I think, and hasn't updated any of his logs, so I hope he is alright.
was working on those ork officer heads....but that was a long time ago..
usually when a log like this goes dormant before the end, I kinda worry about the poster.
He has been active in his other log called Hortwerth's painting, sculpting and converting log, go check it out to see an awesome new nurgle army he has done.
